The show is bizarrely cruel in a really weird way.
I managed to crawl through season 2, and it's apparent that Subaru's schizo nature is born from the author's utter lack of skill. The
objective is clear: he wants to have Subaru suffer, make mistakes and
pay despite his die-resurrect power, he wants to represent the psychological weight of such a situation and how a "normal kid" would react. Problem is execution.
Re-Zero, is, well,
mean. So he gets through the most theatrical deaths and suffering again and again and again until it becomes
funny, when the author requires that he "learns from his mistakes" he becomes Chris-Chan lite, and the universe will conspire to crush him pathetically. Suddenly, when there's the need for the plot to advance, everything will work fine just because (the hunt in Season 2) and we'll proceed to the next set of humiliations. After a while you stop having
empathy for Subaru because the author essentially made him a schizo lolcow with a harem of braindead stereotypes.
I'm going back to some classical series with some friends (anime nights in our old age, who would have guessed) and we approached three old timers I've never seen before:
Escaflowne, recommended by this very thread. Apparently there's a strong niche opinion that Escaflowne is
actually terrible and only dumb Americans that have never seen Proper Gundam find it good. I don't know, it feels kind of experimental and corporate at the same time, but gosh the medieval mecha animation of a joy and the 80ies shojo-lite plot is almost nostalgic. It feels like something anchored in the 80ies though.
Monster, that I like a lot but I fear the 70+ episodes. Seems like a good drama devoid of the usual melodramatic excesses typical of the genre (I mean, there's drama, but it doesn't feel incredibly
juvenile). I could not take seriously when the protagonist felt guilt for leaving a Turk to die, I guess the Japs never had the pleasure of meeting roaches in real life.
Baccano what the fuck is this stop adding characters please stop what's going on oh god multiple narratives at the same time
