Ok, I took some time to browse through Dobson's art. I mostly refrained from talking about it, because I can't draw a straight to safe my life. But after klicking through a bunch of them, I finally might figured out what bugs me about it.
...yes, yes, I know her upper thumb is off and her neck and gills look like the middle part of a bendy straw, but even I could photoshop those one out. But this picture is interesting, I look at this and think:
Okay this is nice, not extraordinary, but not bad either.
If you look at most of his other art, you will find that it is either some Nintendo- or 80's-cartoon-fanart, or that he's trying to make some lame pun which ruins the picture. Or his characters look like they are motionless dolls or cardboard cut-outs, like they are holding the pose so someone can take the photo.
Although this sounds a little bit cliché, most of his artwork looks "uninspired" or like he is missing any form "artistic drive" like he had an idea, but then is only going through the bare minium of motions to make that picture happen. If you do any kind of art, you want to go these extra three steps, just to ensure you did everything to make it good - these steps seem to be missing. He seems to be a lot better, when he does something else than fanart or art from one of his "stories".
