The thing is, this really only happens to Dobbybear. It's only because he doesn't want criticism. If he didn't chimp out, no one would bother. But he chimps out, lols are had and he bitches on Twitter that the trawls aren't paying him for his shit artwork. Never mind that an actual donor could be leaking it.

Which is half the problem with the paywall. The stuff he uploaded isn't impressive and if by some freak accident he enters a personal renaissance, theoretically, nobody would see it.
I see a few people with Patreons that have a much better system: Their stuff is available publicly but they still have benefits. For instance, an artist might release their works on a fortnightly or monthly basis... but backers can see each piece the minute it's ready. People can then still see you're doing stuff (as in anything at all beyond hunting for toilets in Skyrim) and if they're engrossed enough, they're going to pay to see stuff early, especially if it's only a buck or ten out of their back pocket per month. The fact that they don't hide behind a paywall for fan art also helps that "nice chap" perception.
TL;DR: The "You don't HAVE to pay me but it'd seriously help me" angle is better than "PAY ME NOW YOU HAVE TO PAY ME GIMMEGIMMEGIMME EVEN THOUGH I CAN'T BE FUCKING BOTHERED TO MAKE A GUY'S EYES ALIGN CORRECTLY DESPITE IT BEING REALLY EASY"

Not only that, it is his unrealistic expectation that somehow art he uploads on a specific website is not going to leak out to the rest of the internet. This is the whole "Streisand Effect" in action, the more he wants to hide his art the more interest there is for people to disseminate it. It is that attitude of his of wanting to block any criticism and being in a safe hugbox that exacerbates his critics into being far more motivated to do so.
