I think the message is that your female characters shouldn't be sexually assaulted in fiction because sexual assault is bad. Bad things such as conflict could happen. Then where would we be?
The "rape as plot device" dilemma is a delicate one. As a general rule, writers are advised to stay away from using it unless it has a significant impact on the story, character development, or makes a legitimate point.

In the world of GoT, terrible things happening routinely is a central part of the world and the story. Complaining about a rape in a story like that is sort of like complaining that Walter White doesn't give a flying fuck or even think about all the people addicted to the drugs he manufactures.

But you can't show it happening to a male character because then it isn't rape, riiiiiight?I think it's more to do with the idea that sexual assault is a trope for female characters. It is kind of demeaning to perpetuate the idea that sexual assault is the worst thing that can happen to a female character because they're female.
