I think the message is that your female characters shouldn't be sexually assaulted in fiction because sexual assault is bad. Bad things such as conflict could happen. Then where would we be?

This is like when people threw a fit over Gaston being sexist even though Gaston is portrayed as a villain because he is sexist.

That is presumably about the GoT rape that has everyone shrieking, and they predictably missed the entire goddamn point.

From the little I know of the show, it's probable the showrunners did it knowing full well it would piss off that kind of person and cause controversy.

My sister bought one of those exercise balls yesterday, and when I walked into the kitchen today, I saw an air pump next to it.

I just cracked up.

If Dobson made an inflation joke and indulged in some self depreciation humor, and admitted he drew some bad stuff in the past, I think a lot of the shit he gets would go away. But he's too smug to make self depreciating jokes.

Also, how am I supposed to write a male character being raped when men can't be raped?

GoT show for those curious (it differs from the book):
Sansa is raped by Ramsay on their wedding night and makes Theon watch. For clarification, Ramsay has tortured, murdered and raped lots of people. He brutally tortured Theon for months and cut off his penis and sent it to Theon's father. He is never portrayed as a good guy and it was clear Sansa would be raped the second she was introduced to him. She is has already had tons of horrible stuff happen to her, including having her entire family murdered (her father was beheaded in front of her) and was abused and tortured by King Joffrey. To think rape would define her is seriously stupid.

And Dobby has the thinnest skin imaginable, do you think isn't a single thing about himself that he doesn't take too seriously? A single comment resulted in a 9 page tweet.

The "rape as plot device" dilemma is a delicate one. As a general rule, writers are advised to stay away from using it unless it has a significant impact on the story, character development, or makes a legitimate point. In short: only use rape if there's no other way to say what you want to say. Even if it meets those criteria it still takes a talented writer to effectively pull it off. People don't just "get over" being raped, for example, which is a common pitfall.

Using rape/sexual assault simply to create conflict or establish character depth (which is what I believe the original Tweet was referring to) is in poor taste and the clear mark of an incompetent writer. Dobby, however, has drawn quite a bit of rape porn, so it's yet another Tweet in which he flaunts his hypocrisy.

In the world of GoT, terrible things happening routinely is a central part of the world and the story. Complaining about a rape in a story like that is sort of like complaining that Walter White doesn't give a flying fuck or even think about all the people addicted to the drugs he manufactures.

Anyway Dobson is probably only mad that the rape wasn't by inflating the woman until she exploded, so that he could fap to it.

Do we know that the original tweet was specifically talking about GoT?

Hell, does Dobby even watch GoT? It's not animated...

Yes. But Gaby Dunn has an advice show for teens (among her other projects) and doesn't just flap her jaw in manufactured outrage on Twitter like Dobby.

I think it's a weird choice for the writers to put extra rapes in the GoT TV show, given how much rape is already in the books, but whatever. I don't watch shows if I don't like them. Somebody asked Gaby Dunn to comment, whereas nobody asked Dobbers.

When Dobson get's his way and bad guys are no longer allowed to be bad and trigger people, he will get to complain about how with out plot how bad things are, that he doesn't watch to start.
He can't lose!

I think it's more to do with the idea that sexual assault is a trope for female characters. It is kind of demeaning to perpetuate the idea that sexual assault is the worst thing that can happen to a female character because they're female.

I actually don't know a lot about GoT but I'm pretty sure that it takes place in a fantasy/medieval setting, in which case rape doesn't sound too far out of bounds. Don't the books deal with a lot of sexual shit anyway?

But you can't show it happening to a male character because then it isn't rape, riiiiiight?

That's the gist of it, actually. I'd like to see it dealt with from a male perspective. Rape isn't a thing that happens only to women but it seems like the media treats it that way. It's not the rape itself but the way that it's used.

At least that's my understanding of the issue.
