His bear fursona...Christ, even when he's supposed to be happy he looks miserable as fuck. And old. Change the fur color to outright grey and he'd be Grandpa Dobson.

There's that, and like I said before, his cartoony pictures never, ever have the eyeballs shaded. it's a very subtle thing but it leads to every character he draws looking deranged and soulless.

It's a better picture, and more effort is involved, but it's not a great piece of fanart by any means. Samus' skin tone reminds me of a waterlogged corpse and her Varia Suit is colored very oddly. None of the colors used suggest it takes place in a cave, despite the lineart saying otherwise.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't say it's good, but it's at least decent and shows he tried that he gave a damn. Far better than his current shit.

Also her hand looks fucked up. And the shading on the whole looks weird.

Honestly, that's probably the best description of Dobson Bear I've heard.

As for the eye shading thing. Plenty of cartoon and anime characters (like Bugs Bunny) lack it, so I'm not surprised ol' Dobsy left them out too.

This is true, but it also depends on the style. Since Dobby's pictures are usually shaded very consistently (with no consideration towards a light source for that matter, but that's a different story), the lack of shading on the eyes really stands out. It works for some things, but not for Dobby's huge-eyed characters. But you are right. It's probably a case of him taking the lazy way out, aping something other artists do with no consideration on how it fits into his own style.

It's hard to believe he went from this:

To this:

This is legitimately sad.
For such a big feminist, he sure made Samus look like a girly girl with big doe eyes and lipstick.

That's gotta be it, though to be fair, I'm kinda guilty of that too. It's just something I started off with and never quite got out of (doesn't help that I draw my stuff small). As for the shading, yeah, it just seems like he slapped it on without considering any real light source. Kind of like how Tim Buckley does things.

Though to be fair, I'm not a 30-something year old man that went to art school and declared that references and "anime-style" are bad, obsesses over a (forced) fictional lesbian couple and bitch about random shit on twitter just to get out of drawing art.

Anyone notice that this is a recurring problem with "feminist" male webcomic artists? Aaron Diaz does this, too.

"POWER TO WOMEN! STOP SEXUALIZING THEM" *draws all women with big tiddies, skimpy clothes, and tons of makeup*

I don't even have a problem with drawing women in skimpy clothes or looking sexy. I just would like some goddamn honesty about it for once instead of this pretentious, hypocritical whining.

Male "feminism" is full of people like Dobby. It's actually kind of funny, considering they're basically the movement's footsoldiers. It's not about sex or using it as a way to get into women's pants. It's just that they idolize (and dehumanize) the concept of a female paying attention/agreeing to them so much, and that's why they do it. It's all about female approval.

It's sad. Dobby is one of the few artists that I know that I think are deservingly dislikeable. Sure, I met some people that while unsatisfied with their work, they decided to accept criticism and keep on trucking, fixing their work to become bigger, bolder, and actually be genuinely friendly people at the same time. Dobson is a mediocre, whiny, selfish hypocrite seeking for ego strokes. Oh, and being a "feminist" just to get some china.

Were if Dosbon do a complete 180 on his life, decide to accept criticism all of a sudden, became more friendlier, etc. then maybe he could've been something better, someone that I would actually be impressed with. He could reject the feminist Pooh bear avatar and be himself. But that's unlikely at this point. If something really tragic happened to him, only to reveal that it was a ploy for attention, then he's essentially fucked.

That's some really atrocious pixel art. Christ.

Gotta admit, out of all the art-related lolcows, Dobson makes me the angriest. At least with most of them they're lacking something, whether it be talent, skill, training, whatever. They have an excuse. Dobson has ALL of those things and yet he's still fucking awful because he's so lazy and his ego so huge.

Haven't been through the whole thread but I haven't seen anyone bring up yet the two things that drive me the craziest about his art: his thick, clumsy, inconsistent linework and his colouring. The latter somehow manages to look oversaturated AND washed out at the same time. His humans look like pale, dead-eyed corpses and everything else looks like it was run through bleach.

I don't remember where it was but a while back he posted a tutorial about how to draw like he does. Not only does he not believe in anti-aliasing and he colours and inks on the same layer, but he'll turn the background some eye-searing lime green colour which absolutely destroys the colours that he's working with. And it's very obvious that he never goes back and thins out lines or anything out (a problem he wouldn't have if he put the goddamn inking on a separate layer.) These aren't even amateur mistakes, these are things that even amateurs know not to do. But Dobby has 4 years of art school under his belt. These are mistakes that he didn't even used to make. So it's not like Humon where his art skill hasn't improved. It's actively gotten so much worse than when he started.

And don't even get me started on that offensive lesbian shit because that gets personal. Apologies if I've gotten a little a-loggy, but Dobby gets me heated like few other lolcows do.
I did mention how it looks like he lined his sketches with a sharpie and makes his drawings even worse. Pictures here: http://cwckiforums.com/threads/andrew-dobson-aka-tom-preston.1933/page-76#post-387627

It's a kawaii uguu~ face. Cause y'know, Korra is totally the kind of character that would make that expression.
It's not just that, it's like try making that face in the mirror and ask yourself when exactly are you going to ever make this face. Even kawaii uguu artists know when to make appropriate expressions for situations.

I figured someone did at some point. It's a pretty glaring error. I just had to bring it up again because it just looks so terrible every time he does it.

Oh god my eyes at that artwork you posted, though.

Honestly, for all we know, that actually is how he acts in real life. Sad as it is to assume it.

Oh, and being a "feminist" just to get some china.
I've seen people like Dobby before. It's not for china, "that's disrespectful, how dare you imply that I'm just in it for that robblerobble" but it is for approval. It's less about sex and more self-esteem. They put interaction and talking with their own gender on such a low level that they don't care about what those JERKS say, so they need female attention.

That's just weenery. I'd like to know what it's like to really talk to the guy IRL. I wonder if he's as defensive as he is online.
I couldn't tell you who met him and what page it's on, but apparently he's really fucking autistic, even if he's unaware/in total denial. Like, even moreso than the ween who sprayed him with water. Is it any surprise though from a guy who actually flat out tells people to go away?

I find that in a lot of cases, my own included, artists start by mimicing an art style of something they like (Sonic and DBZ in my case, as well as countless others), but eventually develop a style their own using those inspirations as an underlining.

Of course, a fair number of them can draw better than post-bear Dobby, and are not giant flaming assholes.
