Maybe it's just me, but part of it seems to be that all of his depictions of emotion and expression feel... hamfisted. As if he doesn't totally understand how to portray such things...? I'm not sure. His characters just don't feel very expressive or relatable to me, just by looking at them.I remember some Kiwi saying that Dobson couldn't decide whether he wanted to stick with his original anime-influenced style, or try for a more Western-looking style - is that the reason his stuff is so uncanny valley? As someone who knows next to nothing about cartooning, I can't work out what the problem is... Does he simply not have the technical chops to draw anything remotely realistic?
