It's bizarre how these things work out, it's usually adults that obsess over Nintendo games aimed at kids and kids who obsess over COD which is aimed at adults.
It sounds like Dobson is just bad at the game to be honest.
And we've got that weird reality with Nintendo games for kids: the people playing them the most are adults. All the actual kids are playing Call of Duty.
I guess it has to do with the fact that kids wants to be adults so hard and wish to do adult stuff, so COD being about war, guns, shooting each other is "appealing" to their interests... on the other side, adults no longer care and some of them wish to be kids again or are simply trying to find ways to get some easy going fun, so games like COD, Battlefield, etc, are of no interest to them because it's "boring", instead, something colorful, easy to play and relaxing (most of the "aimed at kids" games) is what they like the most.
Also, there's this little test we like to do in paintball (yeah, a sport I like to practice), were we can spot COD kids easily because they make really stupid mistakes and normally they are the first to quit because "getting hit hurts" so yeah, kids do COD because it's edgy, not because they really like the game or the style at all.
