It was a toss up between this and Rocketman this weekend. Went with Rocketman and didn't regret it.
The fact "Prince Ali" was more impressive in the stage show, which had a considerably smaller budget, convinced me this wasn't worth my time. If you want to see a live-action version of this, just go and see the stage show. Theatre tickets may be more expensive than cinema tickets, but you won't regret it. Why the fuck they chose Guy Ritchie of all people to direct this is beyond me.
I will say that Will Smith seemed to be trying his heart out to bring something new to the Genie while also staying true to the original in all the clips I saw and he was succeeding for the most part, so I can buy he's the best part about this film. May catch this when it comes on TV, but otherwise I won't bother.
Also, a friend of mine worked on this. Looked like he had fun, but you know what they say - the more fun they had making the movie, the less fun it will be for those watching it.
