Aladdin remake trailer/general - robin williams didn't die for this

You know I don't really care about Aladdin or Disney in general, except for Lilo and Stitch don't you dare touch that movie with a remake or I'll sperg so hard. I just find it sad that a character that was basically made for Robin Williams will be remembered at least in some minds as being played by Will Smith. Will Smith's performance that I've seen so far is just passable, it isn't insultingly bad by itself, it is the context around Robin Williams that makes it a joke. It's sad because I think everyone working on this knows that it won't work, at least for the Genie, but everyone just seems forced to make it happen anyway.

I also always wondered, why not just use Homer Simpson's voice actor and just make the Genie full CG top to bottom, at least that voice has been used in other media involving Genie so it wouldn't be that weird of a transition.

You know this is why I live under a rock when it comes to movies until some big trailer becomes popular for being shit, I get to delay learning about terrible things like this. Well, time for the only Disney film I really like to get ruined. I'm going to go eat tide pods now.

The songs are up. Jasmine's song is actually the weakest of the bunch, sounds more like something out of Christina Aguilera's albums than Aladdin. But the instrumentals on the classic songs sound nice.

...I probably will, but not in theatres. Not giving The Mouse my money. I expect to be disappointed.
 
I decided to be part of the problem and go see it tonight. It was honestly better than I expected.

THE BAD
-The CG sucks.
-Jaffar's voice is the worst.
-The movie's momentum crashes at a pivotal moment when they throw in another song. Jaffar wishes himself Sultan and soon has Jasmine taken away. She reprises her Girl Power song, then stands up to him. Would have been a lot stronger to just drop the song and jump straight to her standing up to him.
-We never see Jasmine's belly button.

THE GOOD
-I liked Aladdin himself. I think Mena Massoud had a lot of charisma and owned the role. I'd argue he's the strongest part of the cast.
-Will Smith doesn't try to act like Robin Williams. His dialogue's different, and the only direct reference I can think of (aside from the songs) is "itty-bitty living space" at the end.
-The set design and wardrobe were cool.
-Alan Menken's score is great. A darker version of "Friend Like Me" plays when Jaffar gets the lamp.

I enjoyed it overall, even if I still prefer the original.

Billy Magnussen. Apparently he steals the show. I loved him in Game Night and Ingrid Goes West.

About Ferngully though....its kinda sad Samantha Mathis hasn't really done anything noteworthy since that, Little Women, and Mario Bros. She's basically known as River Phoenix's girlfriend who was with him when he died. It sucks.

At least it's not Quest for Camelot
 
Ok, so I just listened to Will Smith's versions of Arabian Nights and Friend Like Me.

They aren't terrible. MUCH better and more lively than any of the recreations from the Beauty & The Beast remake, if you ask me. However, they aren't even close to being as good as the original, so ... Again, I have to ask "why?" when it comes to these remakes.

Nothing I've seen or heard from this movie is going to convince me to pay to see it in theaters. No thank you.

The era of direct-to-video sequels is starting to look much less dark. Those damn things have more creative integrity than these fucking remakes do. At least the direct-to-video sequels served as an innocuous thing that little kids can sit down for 90 minutes and enjoy. They had a purpose, at the very least.

I liked him, but I think he only shows up twice, and only for a very brief moment the second time. He certainly seemed to be enjoying himself, though.

Not nearly as much of a character as he was. Talks a lot less, speaks more like a typical parrot. The most action he gets is a pointless scene where Jafar possesses him and turns him into a demon bird thing to chase after Aladdin and friends.

Sooooo these same "woke" people praising it now were legitimately bullying the actress who plays Jasmine online back in 2017, when the cast was announced. The actress is bi-racial, therefore she was deemed "too white" to play the role.

So I just saw the movie.

I really didn’t like how they changed Jasmine’s character. The entire crux of her relationship with Aladdin in the original film was that she wanted to be free from her duty as a princess and wanted to have freedom to let her heart decide.

Now she wants to be Sultan and rule over everyone. (Probably wouldn’t be a good one considering unlike in the original she didn’t try to offer to get money to pay for the food she stole for that kid. Instead she yelled “BUT THEY WERE HUNGRY!” Yeah. Fuck you and your livelihood peasant!)

It takes away the impact of “A Whole New World”. Why sing about how amazing the world is and how you want to be with Aladdin exploring it when that goes completely against your new character?

Also the whole “You are best seen and not heard” part of the story felt so tacked on. And it just kinda made me think that perhaps Disney is essentially doing everything it can to pretend the original never existed because it’s “problematic”. Kinda like the whole Dumbo apparently being edited to remove the crows.

I’m okay with stories like that, but I would prefer if they made something new instead of fundamentally changing a character in an established piece of work.

Other than that it was mediocre. Will Smith was fine when he was just being himself rather than trying to emulate Robin Williams. The way he talked to Aladdin during the “Jams” scene worked pretty well and I wouldn’t have minded if they went with a fully different interpretation of Genie.

Riding on the carpet should make her aware how misogynist, racist, xenophobic, and transphobic the Whole Old World is. She then resolves to change it by writing fanfictions of the Sharia Law.

So I decided to spend this evening watching the animated version. I regret nothing. What a delightful movie.

After rewatching it though, I just HAVE to ask:

Is the scene with her pretending to be under a love spell to distract Jafar in the remake? That moment is SO not woke for modern day, and I can almost guarantee it's not in the new version.

I am not shocked at all to hear that they changed Jasmine's character. Jasmine was one of my favorites when I was a little girl; I remember having a Jasmine and Raja-themed bed set when I was a little kid, too. Clearly, I'm still alive and not damaged from the media I consumed back then, haha. Fuck you, Disney.

Nope. Just a very quick and rushed scene of a wedding ceremony between her and Jafar before she sees Aladdin swooping in on Carpet to save the day.

She then grabs the lamp from Jafar’s coat pocket. (Kinda silly considering Jafar was a thief like Aladdin who worked his way up in this version. Even used his experience as a thief to steal said lamp. Good job idiot.) And then jumps off the balcony and onto Carpet.
