Achievement Hunters Club - Wasted 300 hours of my life just for a platinum gang

Worst achievements go to the early 360 games that required you to reach #1 on the leaderboard, like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
Any of those games from that era that would have almost all singleplayer achievements just to throw in 1-3 multiplayer ones as a fuck you can go fuck themselves. Even worse ones are like Good Guy Nick from L4D2, which requires you to play through a whole campaign with someone who got the game during a free weekend event, which only happens once every few years.

I looked up the solution to one of these achievements just to get an idea of how bad they are.

It took some guy over 4000 hours, 3 consoles, and multiple accounts, just to grind out an achievement for 40 gamerscore. I would rather commit suicide.

I'm a fan of the Anno series achievements where you get little decorations or profile colours for completing them. Wonder if they'll continue that for the new Roman themed one

That electric bill must be high as hell. I would just not play the game for THAT reason alone. Luckily CoD 3's General (get 40000 points recorded for the leaderboard from ranked matches) has a cap. Still tedious as hell to get eight players for Capture the Flag, drop/retrieve the flag for 20 minutes at a time, create lag so the points could multiply, rinse and repeat.

Important milestone, unlock an achievement named after you.

This achievement is from CoD: World at War. Complete the 13th mission, Breaking Point, on any difficulty. (Of course, I did it on Veteran for another series of achievements.)

for steam i use Steam Achievement Manager and unlock them all by default. can't be arsed to get addictive on PC as well, just enjoyin the game instead of forcing myself to grind any unfun game.
I avoid that shit like the plague specifically because it dilutes whatever last vestigial bit of importance Steam achievements of all things might have had and it becomes completely hollow as a result. I'd rather know for certain that I did do what was required to get something fairly impressive and know that I've improved enough at a game to be able to clear an especially difficult milestone.
(Besides, most external leaderboards/trackers will usually ban you for using it.)

Aside from that, I've spent far more time than most others might like to even admit with achievement hunting on Steam, enough to the point that my first attempt at writing a lolcow thread here was on someone specifically from that whole scene. I dare say I've managed to complete some especially difficult games within my full list that might be impressive to some. Really, all that matters to me is that if I 100%ed a game — even if it isn't that great or is just a tedious grind — then I have the perfect excuse to never look at it again and move onto the next, and can confidently say whether it's good or bad since I gave it enough of a go that I was willing to complete it.

Even on Steam there are a few external leaderboard sites that people use to either personally track their completion of different games or just compete for the highest point values based on an achievement's overall rarity (among legitimate unlocks). Problem is, one of the old historically good trackers for that, Astats, has been largely decrepit for some time and hardly even works half the time given the sole owner and developer is allegedly a random Dutch guy with congenital heart problems who is also not easily reachable. SteamHunters has been the go-to for a fair few people and has even loosely partnered with SteamDB for the latter's browser extension, but I have my personal opposition to it in terms of its affiliations and moderation.

As for what game I'm currently trying to get out of the way, I've been hooked on Balatro for quite some time now and I'm honestly not too opposed either to grinding out the Gold Stake stickers on every Joker. I enjoy the game enough that I'm willing to pour that bit more time into it for the sake of saying I've done everything that the game can possibly reasonably expect you to do.

I miss the 360 days of good fps campaigns (and good casual multiplayer fps games in general). Replaying WAW’s veteran on PC was a lot easier than I remembered it being (same with the rest of the CODs and Halo) - a mixture of being older and better and the M+KB advantage.

Yeah, the addiction can go overboard. I've seen a small amount of people that don't even play games without any achievements. There's also those that try to get all the achievements on their first playthrough making it a lot harder and less enjoyable than what the game intended. This is why I do a blind playthrough on my first run then do the achievement hunting on later runs.
The sign that it’s gone out of control is when one buys shovelware just to farm achievements. I remember people doing that in the 360 days and I know there’s a trophy hunting scene that developed from the PS4 onwards that has that problem.

I think shovelware for easy achievements started from the 8th generation of consoles (PS4, Xbox One) since the process to publish games on their platform has been easier with little oversight.

Personal challenge for me: 100% a title before it becomes delisted from Game Pass. The game in question for me is the remake of Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom. The majority of the achievements are relating to collecting various collectibles. Since BfBB takes inspiration from Banjo-Kazooie with its massive, complex level design and progression being tied to collecting items, this will take a while even with a guide.

While it's difficult to say whether 7th gen shovelware was made just for trophy/achievement hunters there were definitely games which ended up filling that niche (e.g., I remember Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Burning Earth being bought by GS grinders for an easy 1000g).

Regarding BFBB, I 100% it w/o a guide in like ~10 hours. I imagine your childhood memories have clouded your judgement on the expansiveness/difficulty of the game (not that I blame you, I never 100% it as a kid). I wish they'd remaster the movie game, I remember it being almost as good as BFBB.

I've never played BfBB as a kid. Only Truth or Square on my Xbox 360. That's next on my list since I have three achievements left. I think Truth or Square is more linear than BfBB.

That happens to me a lot, not just with 100% games or getting all cheevos but with just beating games from my childhood in general, Nox is an action RPG and while I didn't expect it to go as long as Icewind Dale which took me 31 hours to beat, I was still surprised that it took me just 8 to beat it as the Conjurer class. Next is the first STALKER, I only installed the ZRP mod for an as vanilla experience as possible - only took me 11 hours to beat it, keeping in mind that I did a shitton of side content. Another one is the first Fallout - took me just under 20 hours. I remembered it being shorter than Fallout 2, but even with doing a shitton of side content Fallout 2 was much more expansive than I remembered, I had 56 hours playtime in it if you're wondering.

Last one isn't a personal one but one of my friends got the DE for the 3D era GTA games. Dunno why as he said that they looked like shit but he wanted to get all cheevos in all of them and see what changes they made and also keeping in mind that he's an expert in GTA games in general. San Andreas took him just 42 hours for all cheevos, keeping in mind that he didn't do some overly autistic optimal route or whatever, he played it very casually but his skill at the game did a lot of heavy lifting (not to mention that according to him they made the game a lot easier compared to the original).

Another game to add to my "all achievements unlocked" collection. I had three achievements left to finish, which involved collecting concept art, upgrading Spongebob's furniture, and finding Patrick Star sleeping in all levels.

Overall easy game to beat and complete; it's not a collect-a-thon platformer like Battle for Bikini Bottom, it's a linear action-adventure budget platformer that flew under the radar that pays homage to ten years of SpongeBob SquarePants.

There's a glitch with Home Sweet Pineapple, upgrading SpongeBob's furniture, that would render it inaccessible if you upgrade Gary's bowl and bed in the wrong order. That stopped me from 100% many years ago. Luckily, I knew of it beforehand with a fresh playthrough.

Done!

It took me 16 hours, even WITH a guide. It's definitely harder than Truth or Square on account of needing collectibles to progress and unlock levels. You'd often need to backtrack to solve puzzles, complete objectives, and find golden spatulas.

I don't like that style of gameplay progression.

I previously 100%

Ace Combat 7
and now, recently 100%

Project Wingman

Nice arcadey plane games. I initially held off on the latter because indie takes on preexisting franchises that are touted as being good by 'tubers alongside having meme content associated with them are generally mediocre if not outright bad. However, PW was very fun and quite polished. Further, being made by like three guys makes it one of the most impressive indies I've ever played.

I notice that PS3 trophies have a delay from achieving the requirements of said trophy and the trophy actually popping up. That's annoying.

If we're being technical, I've completed all possible gamerscore for CoD: World at War. Finding all the single player collectibles (death cards,) beating the campaign on Veteran (grenade spam + infinitely respawning enemies = hell), completing Zombies DLC (i.e. surviving until round 20 without perks, buying every available perk on one map, achieving 75k points in one game) and other miscellaneous tasks (i.e. complete a level without dying, using just melee/flamethrower, destroying towers with a tank.)

I say all possible gamerscore because there are two achievements worth ZERO gamerscore related to multiplayer progression. Get first prestige and get tenth prestige, respectively. Getting to tenth prestige legitimately for World at War will take time since it's a 17-year-old title in a yearly series. IYKYK. Not impossible, it's just a time sink that requires dedication in playtime and populating game modes that give ample XP.

This thread is mainly going to discuss about achievements in videogames, flexing your 100% or platinum trophy (if you're a consolefag) and showing tips on how to get certain achievements.
Got something!

This is the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. There's an achievement world where all the requirements for its achievements are laid out for players to do.

What are your thoughts on achievement hunting groups that use badges as a reward for completing lists of games? Personally I love the idea, got into it from infinite backlog
I always love getting recognition for anything. Virtual badges are easier to store.

Gears of War: Reloaded comes out tomorrow for Xbox, PC and PlayStation (if you can believe that.) I had a personal challenge to attempt: since Reloaded uses the same achievement list as the original (Ultimate Edition), try to match up the achievements earned from Ultimate Edition into Reloaded. Example, the first achievement I unlocked from UE was Zen and the Art Part 2 (five perfect reloads in a row), try to unlock that first when Reloaded launches and go from there.

Guns, Gore'n'Cannoli 2. Fun little Metal Slug type game where ya kill zombies, gangsters and Nazis, really good animations. Achivements themselves aren't hard, save for two tied to specific levels. But, good thing they aren't tied on play on the hardest difficulty, so you can easily do them on normal or easy.
