It is massively shit. But because it was close, plentiful, and cheap, US refineries figured out the chemistry to handle it without needing to cut it with light-weight oil. The resulting product is still high in sulfur and doesn't meet western emissions standards but is fine for 3rd world countries like Brazil.
The US imports large amounts of heavy crude despite drilling so much itself because its refineries were built to run on it. Large amounts of refining infrastructure along the Gulf Coast was built with venezuelan heavy crude in mind before the commies took over in the 90s.

Daily reminder for that brief period of time during Trump 1.0 the US was pumping enough oil domestically for its needs and became an exporting nation, the US was still importing millions of gallons, because the US refines oil from other countries and sells the resulting oil.
Because the caveat on the US becoming an oil exporting nation was the US was a net exporter of petroleum products not of oil. That is, we imported oil but exported more gasoline, diesel, tar, and plastic more than the ammount of oil we brought in.
It is not that US refineries are made to run on heavy crude; the US has the best oil in the world, Texas Sweet Crude, which is damn near perfect for refining.
But the US is north of the Carribean and S.A. and they universally have heavy, sulfur-rich crude. So the US refining industry adapted to process that thicc slurry. No one else really has because internationally its not worth trying to transport (the only advantage it has is its cheap) and anyone local, the infrastructure needs to process it are too high.
(this is why Venezuela was so important for Russia and Iran; Russian and Iran needed someone to launder sanctioned oil, Venezuela needed lighter consistency oil to dilute their sludge so it could be refined in a normal refinery).
Ignoring the geopolitical fallout this economically is going to yield some very entertaining realizations on the part of Russia, OPEC, and Canada within the next few months.
Trump wants his peace prize, and if he can get oil under $50/barrel for about 6 months he is likely to get it for reasons that outside of the scope of this thread.
