The US has a lot less to gain from diving headfirst into Syria besides that military base they have to get that sweet, sweet oil now that the SAA is no more. I firmly believe he US trying to oust Assad was always more about curbing Iranian and Russian influence in the Middle East than increasing the already high US influence there. Sure, Washington would love it if their puppet in the FSA somehow manages to firmly take power, but the primary goal was to have Assad get a Ghedaffi or have him leave Syria with his tail between his legs.

Turkey is a NATO member/(inconsistent) ally, and the US's greatest ally Israel is there, as well as the Med and just fucking Aircraft Carriers. Plus bases in Iraq. The US didn't really need more military presence in the Levant, but kicking Iran and Russia out from the Med was going to be the real gain.

Yeah this was literally the stated goal. In one of the now declassified cables to Assad, the US promised assistance in return for the Assad regime cutting ties with Hezbollah and terminating the lease for the Russian naval base.

Agreements like that are absolutely worthless and Al-Assad knew it.

What would've happened is the Government would've thrown out the Russians, ended support for Hezbollah, and then been overthrown even easier.

It's happened time and again when dealing with the US.

I'm actually surprised the Syrian army & pro-government militias didn't do a retreat to the coast where support for the Ba'athist government is/was strongest like in 2012-2013.

From what I hear from friends who follow the war more closely than I these days is the Ba'athist forces pretty much descended into warlordism from 2020 onwards with most military & militia commanders having little real loyalty to the Regional Command of the Ba'ath Party. As a result no effective response could be mounted especially with the command structure paralysed by Israeli airstrikes.

Funny because that is pretty much what happened with the Syrian Opposition shortly after the outbreak of the war.

This. Assad was the face of the regime but it seems like he had already effectively lost control years ago. It's the only way to adequately explain how little was done by the regime to actually try and rebuild the country. I checked out of the conflict around 2017 or so, and I remember the regime position being pretty strong, and I expected there would be a mediated peace agreement at some point.

Assad always had the option to boot out the Lebanese and Iranians, and step down himself while preserving most of his father's legacy in a bullshit interim government which would inevitably get couped like Egypt, but he didn't want to do that. Hell, he probably couldn't do that. The SAA goons flatly wouldn't allow that. Like any good Arabs, they prioritized short-term personal enrichment over long-term survival. Now a fucking Turkish-backed Al-Qaeda commander is in charge of whatever Rojava didn't snatch once they realized what was happening.

It's funny because Iran's demographic shift means it's almost certainly going to fall victim to its own regime change in the near future. All of this will basically have been for nothing save, perhaps, for the fact that the Syrian Civil War went on for so punishingly long that Al-Nusra got watered down into a milquetoast version of itself.
