Not well! Out of curiosity I bought some Unico DVDs off ebay before the whole movie was available free online, and the first movie came with it. Unico was hardcore for a kids movie!

As a little bit older child I saw both Akira and Vampire Hunter D on the Sci Fi channel when they used to have "Japanimation month" or whatever. I realized even then I was probably a little too young for it, but it was so scary and cool. So sad what the whole genre turned into. Sad about the "SYFY"channel too.

Unico is an Osamu Tezuka thing, and a weird hallmark of his work is people always make the mistake of thinking his stuff is "kiddy" (usually because of the art style)... and then they watch it and its like, what the actual fuck. Even Astro Boy was like that (so of course you can imagine what his work actually *for* older audiences is like. I recommend either Ayako or Message to Adolf).

(Though Message to Adolf has a thing that bothers me. In the English translation it mentions the Nazis "targeting leftists." Now, the original manga was written in the 1970s... but this particular Translation was written in 2016. There was an earlier translation by Viz and I would love to see if it still contains specific mention of "leftists.")

I miss when Cable/Satellite was good in general. Funny thing is nowadays my house only has local TV stations and yet... some of them are very similar to what cable used to be like. Like there's one that plays a different mix of retro shows and movies every day, much like what I used to love about Sci-Fi and other channels.

Too bad the show is kinda generic when compared to a lot of the other 80s mecha anime, but it's really good if you're into more lighthearted stuff like I am.

This is late 90s, but this transformation from GaoGaiGar is amazing and definitely on par with some of the 80s stuff. Parts of it have Gunbuster-levels of fluidity and detail.

I'd also like to call attention to the 80s Transformers anime. They have excellent transformation sequences the likes of which western Transformers fans wouldn't see until the early 2000s with RID 2001 and the Unicron Trilogy. I enjoy how these manage to retain the blocky G1 aesthetic but also have really detailed transformations complete with finishing sound effects and 80s J-pop.

Cable TV was just like this 40 years ago. A lot of unseen and unknown treasures used go show up every now and then. That sort of feeling is lost nowadays for me.

Ulysses 31, a 1981 coproduction between DIC and the Japanese studio TMS Entertainment, is a pretty neat anime. It's a loose retelling of Greek mythological tales and a cool space opera too with colourful, futuristic designs. It's one of my favourite animes -- I'm surprised it's not more popular.

The recent adaptation f jojo that's been goingon for the last 10 years now or so really plays into "it's a manga/comic adaptation!!" which is cool and all but this ova miniseries really does capture the vibes of the fucking weird powers at play a bit better.
Like how Dio just fucking vanishes and shows up in another spot with nothing hinting at it but a blink and you miss it subtle noise of him suddenly walking or sitting somewhere else for a fucking split second.

Then there's THIS SCENE where they fucking actually show the mental state of the senator deteriorating instead of it just being his panicked internal monologue. Both versions work but I think this shit where it shows how it feels from his perspective instead of just showing him BRRRM teleporting back to the side of the car each time he runs away as something really fucking special I kinda wish they did in the more recent adaptation too.

Jojo OVA is a weird case because it's early 90s but the manga it's adapting was an 80s one

Man I miss when dub openings kicked fucking ass.

At the time I was actually looking to see if anyone had uploaded this full movie (and I mean the exact dub this song is from) anywhere... but I wound up just asking someone and they put the full movie on the Internet Archive.

The original Japanese version is actually easier to find on the usual sites (just look for Locke the Superman Lord Leon).
