I think they abandoned that because it basically echoed the over arching plot of Xena, Warior Princess. A show about Greek warrior with a bloody past who tries to atone for the killing they did, then gives birth to a girl who bestows on her mom the power to kill gods from various Pantheons in order to pave the way for Jesus and Christianity.

If they went in that direction, Kratos would be mocked as Xena with a beard.

Its a shame because you could take other gods from different cultures too. Although you most likely would never be able to get it published in Japan. Can't see him ripping off Buddha's head. Or stabbing Amaterasu. Orochi on the other hand maybe. Pele would be interesting too.

you'd just have to dig deeper and get gods from more ancient cultures in that area. maybe the buddha's off limits, but there's a lot of gods in japan you could go beating the snot out of.

It's also worth remembering japan is the place where games like Persona come from, so if you do it right, it's totally viable. you'd just have to be sure to not spare things like english pagan gods and be a lil' vague about which divine savior we're all waiting for.

Persona 4 ends with “Izanami's crazy, kick her ass.” The Japanese definitely are not too pearl-clutching about showing their nasty gods getting roughed up, even if they do get pissed at shrines being defaced in western-produced games. That said, I still argue that is does somewhat focus more on the “ash-covered guy kills pantheons” aspect of the series rather than the concept of creating a sort of mythology to cover the death of the Europe's old gods and rise of modern religion. Maybe I’m just obsessed with that one early storyboard, but the idea of God of War being about the end of paganism and the rise of Christianity still feels more interesting than Kratos running around and brutally murdering various gods just because they wanted to keep finding mythologies to massacre.
 
Aftermath is now claiming they have 30,000 registered users, with 5400 of them being paid subscribers. There's no reason to doubt those numbers, but its obvious that the majority of the paid subscribers are only doing it because They're Good F*cking People and don't really care about the content. Aftermath's engagement across all platforms is pitiful. Anything on the site that's not a hot-button issue (mostly kvetching about AI) or a deliberately acerbic headline struggles to get into double-digit comments. Their Instagram and TikTok both hover around 1,300 followers. Their Bluesky seems impressive at 120,000 followers until you start looking at posts. There isn't anything from the past month that could crack 1,000 updoots. Less than 1% of their followers can be bothered to leave a like. But at least they're putting out quality content, right?

Let's focus on Gita Jackson. She's the Chilli's Triple Dipper of the site, acting as the token woman, token negro, and token they/them (nobody cares about the pooner Riley MacLeod in the middle):

Her output over the past month is mostly typical Kotaku-era slop such as safe horny posting, Nazi bait, and shit nobody cares about:

Technically it's the Ori and the Blind Forest director doing it and he's right.

Not sure why he's saying that when both Ori games were Gamepass slop (or First Party slop before Gamepass) except now his publisher died and he needs the new game (that isn't Ori, looks like every other top-down arcade souls like) to do well on it's own.

Xbox hasn't had their studios making games worth a shit, instead they've been producing slop.

You can sort that by date. When was the last truly huge game? Halo Infinite in 2021? Halo MCC in 2020? Sea of Thieves in 2018?

They currently own
The Coalition(which hasn't done anything worth a shit with Gears of War in a decade it seems)
Compulsion games(they made south of midnight)
Doublefine(which they're trying to buy themselves from Microsoft and haven't done anything major in years since people still have to refer to them as the guys that did Brutal Legend)
Halo Studios(hooray, they're remaking/remastering more stuff again, whoopdeedoo)
inXile(no fucking idea)
Mojang(they just print money with minecraft)
Obsidian(avowed, enough said)
Playground Games(forza horizon isn't a huge blockbuster game, and Fable still isn't out)
Turn 10(didn't they get fired from doing Forza?)
Undead Labs(State of Decay, which might be fine but it isn't some huge game to convince people to sub to xbox)
Worlds Edge(sorry but AoE is a niche)

And then they've sold or closed a bunch of other studios.

Are they seriously still going with this bullshit excuse? If this were even remotely true, then why don't equivalent male characters get equally beaten with an ugly stick to make them appear 20-30 years older than the actor? The ginger guy from the Star Wars Jedi games? The male model for the main character compared to the female one in Mass Effect Andromeda? Any game by an asian game studio that also captures faces? No one believes this shit at this point.
