Culture Colleges don’t have a guy problem. America has a marriage crisis.

“Colleges Have a Guy Problem” screams the headline over an Atlantic item this week responding to a Wall Street Journal story reporting that if current trends continue, “in the next few years, two women will earn a college degree for every man.”

“The world has changed dramatically, but the ideology of masculinity isn’t changing fast enough to keep up,” Derek Thompson writes. He then quotes Brookings Institution senior fellow Richard Reeves, who adds, “My biggest worry is that by the time policy makers realize that gender inequality in college is a problem, we’ll have hit a point where college will seem deeply effeminate to some men in a way that will be hard to undo. That’s why we need both parties to offer a positive vision of college and a positive vision of masculinity. If male identity is seen, by some, as being at odds with education, that’s a problem for the whole country.”

But are men avoiding college because they see it as effeminate? Neither Thompson nor Reeves point to any actual data that suggest so.

Instead, Thompson notes that, “Single-parent households have grown significantly more common in the past half century, and 80 percent of those are headed by mothers...the absence of male teachers might be part of a broader absence of men in low-income areas who can model the path to college for boys who are looking for direction.”

Thompson then points to a fine study by Harvard economist Raj Chetty that found “income inequality between Black and white Americans was disproportionately driven by bad outcomes for Black boys. The few neighborhoods where Black and white boys grew up to have similar adult outcomes were low-poverty areas that also had high levels of ‘father presence.’ That is, even boys without a father at home saw significantly more upward mobility when their neighborhood had a large number of fathers present. High-poverty areas without fathers present seem to be doubly impoverished, and boys who live in these neighborhoods are less likely to achieve the milestones, such as college attendance, that lead to a middle-class salary or better.”

It seems to me the data points to the conclusion that a driving factor of men not going to college is that men raised in single-parent households have much worse outcomes than men raised in married households.

As Thompson notes above, 80% of single-parent households are headed by women. This means that when marriage rates decline, boys are more often left without male role models to help them navigate and master the world. And there is a growing body of evidence that being raised in an unmarried household hurts boys more than it hurts girls.

For example, researchers have found that in households where the mother has at least some college education but the father is either absent or has no college education, women are 14 percentage points more likely to finish college than boys. Meanwhile, in households where the father is present and has some college, there is no gap in college achievement between the sexes.

Other researchers have found that growing up in a single-parent home significantly decreases the probability of college attendance for boys but has no effect on girls. And the academic problems for boys from single-parent homes start well before college. Other research has documented that while boys from single-parent homes are 25% more likely to be suspended in the eighth grade than girls, the gender gap for married-parent households was just 10%.

A majority of Americans (53%), including 73% of Democrats, believe unwed parents can raise children just as well as married couples.

Unfortunately, they are just wrong. Marriage matters. Children from single-parent households, particularly boys from single-parent households, fare far worse than children from married households.

Until our public policy elites admit our nation has a marriage crisis, the “guy problem” at colleges will only get worse.

Dude I know an electrician who lives in a multi-million dollar beach house, (the kind porn is shot in.) Sure, some ex-con pulling cable through a construction site isn't a high status dude, but not every tradesman is created equal.
I never said otherwise.

Fact is, we live in a post industrial society where you’re perceived as having higher value for being credentialed with degrees and not doing menial work.

That’s not my blackpilling it’s a fact.

Also, I can’t help but be concerned that men not going to college just means that they won’t have the intellectual training or resources to achieve anything in a greater political or cultural sense.

Didn't the communists have influence in the your trade unions? They don't need to corrupt your trade schools, they'll get your job instead.

They were always chock full of commies, but those were more old-school muh FDR New Deal commies rather than wokes.

All TPTB have to do is start planting actual wokes in the unions, and as the old guard retires, the next phase of their takeover can begin. Imagine LPN student nurses being taught by Rachel Dolezal...or a machinists' union somehow affiliated with some holding company of Google. Exactly how they would make it happen I don't know-- but they could.

That's mainly what I'm afraid of.

First it assumes all women inept.
Women aren't built to run the world. In the "not inept" class, you either get sociopaths like Hillary Clinton or women who make decisions based on emotion. Virtually every "successful" woman I know has a personal psychic they consult on important personal decisions and believes in vaguely spiritual bullshit, or they cope by being a BPD wine aunt. Not pictured are women who can separate their personal and professional relationships with people, because I believe they are literally incapable of it.

The one thing those Vox articles are right about is that women can't have it all; you either get women who aren't effective in the "real world" (but maintain a happy and healthy home life) or you get women whose personal lives are in such shambles that their histrionics eventually bleed into their professional lives and they get married to a younger Jamaican man they "met on vacation".
Two, it assumes that across the board women disproportionately represent males.
Arguably, the most important disparity here is in our education system, where women make up 76% of all public school teachers, and most of the guy teachers can barely be called guys. Strong, effective men don't become teachers and the accreditation requirements and unions strongly discourage professionals from becoming teachers as a post-retirement career. I think this is a shame, but why would you teach if you can be a wealth manager on Wall Street instead? I think the state of colleges is a direct result of the disproportionate number of women in faculty and administration, and I think that's probably what's causing the enrollment disparity too, albeit indirectly.

Colleges today are basically a microcosm of what a world run by women would look like.
Three, it assumes tradesmen can’t be influential.
Tradesmen can't be influential on the scale that, say, lawyers can generally be. They don't travel in existing circles of influence, and so they aren't influential, and becoming influential usually means they're no longer tradesmen at heart. Look at what happens to the guys who leave the trades to become union leaders, for example--they may still hold their red seal, but they're basically just politicians at that point.

Men absolutely should become teachers though. Boys need male authority figures, and I think legit do better when they say have a man teach them algebra than some 25 year old woman or sixty year old divorcee.

That said, teaching is a super feminized profession and you have to tolerate a lot of bullshit and red tape, not to mention drama to go through an education program as a guy.

Okey, time for <3 History Lesson <3 . Yay!

America is weird so this may not fit, but worldwide pale skin being good and manual labour being bad stems from ancient times. Propably the best case are the Brahmins.

You see, in ye olden days, the smart people got to work indoors, and the dummies worked outdoors, except for soldiers and such. But, what we would consider tradesmen in the US were part of the indoor workers. A repairer of tools like a blacksmith wasn't looked down. He was no noble, but he was more educated and talented than the treecutter or the pigsty cleaner.

Now where do us evil hu-wites come in? Well its hard to get a tan while you are indoors, and hard to stay pale when you are working 9 hours a day in the sun every day. Back then, the "indoors" people were smarter indeed, so white skin for ages meant "smart" .

But in today's America, its the "manual" part that is looked down, even though a car mechanic needs to be a knowledgeable person to fix all the car parts. Even farmers now have to use a lot of advanced equipment, same for woodcutters. So your outdoor worker is smarter.

And there is an oversaturation of college stuff, and undersaturation of trades, which gives tradesmen better pays. Plus gender studies degree doesn't make you smart, its the opposite.

Final addendum: Old style commies did just fine with the working class, especially the town's worker wagies. Farmers were in that time more into national-socialism.

For example, here the Scytched Crusaders party foretells that voting for everyone else would destroy the nation and the proletariat. These guys were half tankie half nazi types.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate the trades deserves to have their toilet perpetually runneth over while their roof caves in and their lights flash at 90mph (but only at night while they're trying to sleep).

Also, I can’t help but be concerned that men not going to college just means that they won’t have the intellectual training or resources to achieve anything in a greater political or cultural sense.
Politics as it stands now is what's making America implode and the only discussions about culture going on in universities is how to dismantle it. Living in the real world, working hard, and being a part of the community (not necessarily as a leader) is the best way to learn about and engage in both.

I agree that women need to defer more to men who EARN their deference, i.e. a plumber fixes some lady's toilet and tells her she's an idiot for flushing sanitary napkins, she should listen and not call their supervisor to cry sexism. I think it'd also help if women stopped breeding with useless people so they either find a way to become useful or die off. Also, I agree with Shamash that schools need more male professors, although I don't think the US education system is salvageable at this point.

I never said otherwise.

Fact is, we live in a post industrial society where you’re perceived as having higher value for being credentialed with degrees and not doing menial work.

There is one white pill I can think of on this point. Being credentialed used to be a much higher honour than it is now, because it was actually rare before student loans and the post-WW2 standard of living. So the oversaturation of graduates might continue to close the gap. PHDs (especially in STEM) will likely be able to hold their noses in the air perpetually though.

Men and women will value degrees differently as you'll get women thinking even a gender studies degree could be decent because they could still get into a relationship down the line where they themselves don't have to be the bread winner. Since a lot of those women aren't entering for STEM degrees, they're essentially enjoying an extended adolescence that's giving them an overinflated sense of self worth due to having a worthless degree. Also I doubt a lot of these people skipping college are going into trades given how difficult it can be to get jobs or apprenticeships in some of those trades.

Though really both the men and women are going to end up coming out of the college system thinking they're deserving of higher value spouses and end up disappointed in the reality of what they can actually get.

I look forward to our future of deranged, wine-guzzling, fat, unmarried, college-educated cat ladies.
I had that conversation yesterday with a (fairly) close friend of mine. She's 37, and married, but she does not want to have kids and her husband waffles on what he wants. She's hardly alone in my friend circle. At least 5 other women in that group are also deciding to self terminate.

It's something. A trait is being selected for, and it's being selected hard.

Another problem is that trades work is physically exhausting and destructive. What happens when you've been doing back breaking labor out of high school and by thirty your body is completely destroyed?

Now sure, not everyone ends up with a broken back and early onset arthritis, but a lot of young men will. That's going to tank any value they might have in the marriage market.

There was a discussion earlier about women selecting males in the workplace. That ain't gonna happen. EVERY workplace for years has been pushing sexual harassment as a way to keep women from selecting men in the office and to push men out of the office. And women, especially office dwellers, REFUSE to date "down". It's lead to 3 outcomes. 1. A lifetime of unfullfilling tinder dates. The office woman is a highly educated status snob. She's also completely repulsive. She doesn't know how to interact with the opposite sex because she's been gender seperated the majority of her life and raised in a supremacist culture. So she hooks up with some slacker on tinder, she repulses him, usually not enough for a hook up because desperation, and he never calls back. 2. Wine and cats. 3. Men are icky and gross, but nothing is ever said about fucking your female co-workers/boss. The feminist engineered plan of all this. I found myself freelancing for an all female firm for a project and holy shit, it was all thirsty women and bull dykes that got FURIOUS that they lost all the progress they made on their straight office crushes.

For strong and independent people, they sure can't take rejection or life alone well.

If you want to defeat the system, you need to have allies in the game 50, 100, 200 years down the line. Reproduce; guide the emissaries into the future where you cannot follow.
Don't leave the elites and the slave-caste the only people with representatives in the game in the year 2120

It’s too bad that’s how you view the trades. Let’s take your argument though.
First it assumes all women inept.
Two, it assumes that across the board women disproportionately represent males. Three, it assumes tradesmen can’t be influential.
the greatest way into real wealth is business ownership. The trades give you practical experience and skills to own your own business in a profession, face it, isn’t HR Karen work.
But I want to go back to the point I made about your assumption regarding women being across the board inept. This, this isn’t true. There are plenty of women who have done incredible things. Call the heads of company’s “Karens” solely on their gender is a pretty poor argument.

Lastly, I want to ask you a question, what do women generally get degrees in? Not really STEM. Social Sciences. HR work. So you’re right they make decisions in crucial places disproportionately, but it’s still a mans world when you get to the nuts and bolts
I had to read this post twice and use my brain, stop it

I'm not here to be challenged, I'm here to agree and/or get mad

Colleges dont have a guy problem, they have a brainwashing and loyalty-to-your-country problem
I'm old enough to remember when trades and manufacturing were the main path for most-- and things were indeed far better then.

I don't believe it's impossible to bring it back-- but my main fear is, if you guys who are millennial and younger do discover this, and start going down that path-- will the commies simply start infiltrating the vocational schools the same way they did the universities? Scarily enough, it's probably already on their radar as we speak.

I think our biggest mistake was just easing on the communist threat just because of the fall of the soviet union. Now, that isnt to say that happened exactly when that happened, we were taking it easier even before it but it only got worse when America "won" and just assumed that was it and communism was over. Anyone that knows how war works (which is nearly none sadly) know that your enemy might be beaten but their influence can always rise again if you dont kill that shit from the roots. The fact we can just allow teachers and experts to openly embrace communism shows that we are already losing. Try to tell people you were a capitalism to the soviets and see how long you last.

Take it from someone who recently started going again, American schools are fagged out, nigger-gib-scholarship-filled communist propaganda centers. "Colonists are the greatest evil in history" etc. etc. all while unironically using the White man's roads, phones, electricity, cars, buses, and internet infrastructure. A fucking commie, Hole.

I can tell from experience too. I cant stand colleges anymore, never did but it gets worse each year.
