Culture Colleges don’t have a guy problem. America has a marriage crisis.

“Colleges Have a Guy Problem” screams the headline over an Atlantic item this week responding to a Wall Street Journal story reporting that if current trends continue, “in the next few years, two women will earn a college degree for every man.”

“The world has changed dramatically, but the ideology of masculinity isn’t changing fast enough to keep up,” Derek Thompson writes. He then quotes Brookings Institution senior fellow Richard Reeves, who adds, “My biggest worry is that by the time policy makers realize that gender inequality in college is a problem, we’ll have hit a point where college will seem deeply effeminate to some men in a way that will be hard to undo. That’s why we need both parties to offer a positive vision of college and a positive vision of masculinity. If male identity is seen, by some, as being at odds with education, that’s a problem for the whole country.”

But are men avoiding college because they see it as effeminate? Neither Thompson nor Reeves point to any actual data that suggest so.

Instead, Thompson notes that, “Single-parent households have grown significantly more common in the past half century, and 80 percent of those are headed by mothers...the absence of male teachers might be part of a broader absence of men in low-income areas who can model the path to college for boys who are looking for direction.”

Thompson then points to a fine study by Harvard economist Raj Chetty that found “income inequality between Black and white Americans was disproportionately driven by bad outcomes for Black boys. The few neighborhoods where Black and white boys grew up to have similar adult outcomes were low-poverty areas that also had high levels of ‘father presence.’ That is, even boys without a father at home saw significantly more upward mobility when their neighborhood had a large number of fathers present. High-poverty areas without fathers present seem to be doubly impoverished, and boys who live in these neighborhoods are less likely to achieve the milestones, such as college attendance, that lead to a middle-class salary or better.”

It seems to me the data points to the conclusion that a driving factor of men not going to college is that men raised in single-parent households have much worse outcomes than men raised in married households.

As Thompson notes above, 80% of single-parent households are headed by women. This means that when marriage rates decline, boys are more often left without male role models to help them navigate and master the world. And there is a growing body of evidence that being raised in an unmarried household hurts boys more than it hurts girls.

For example, researchers have found that in households where the mother has at least some college education but the father is either absent or has no college education, women are 14 percentage points more likely to finish college than boys. Meanwhile, in households where the father is present and has some college, there is no gap in college achievement between the sexes.

Other researchers have found that growing up in a single-parent home significantly decreases the probability of college attendance for boys but has no effect on girls. And the academic problems for boys from single-parent homes start well before college. Other research has documented that while boys from single-parent homes are 25% more likely to be suspended in the eighth grade than girls, the gender gap for married-parent households was just 10%.

A majority of Americans (53%), including 73% of Democrats, believe unwed parents can raise children just as well as married couples.

Unfortunately, they are just wrong. Marriage matters. Children from single-parent households, particularly boys from single-parent households, fare far worse than children from married households.

Until our public policy elites admit our nation has a marriage crisis, the “guy problem” at colleges will only get worse.

I think our biggest mistake was just easing on the communist threat just because of the fall of the soviet union. Now, that isnt to say that happened exactly when that happened, we were taking it easier even before it but it only got worse when America "won" and just assumed that was it and communism was over. Anyone that knows how war works (which is nearly none sadly) know that your enemy might be beaten but their influence can always rise again if you dont kill that shit from the roots. The fact we can just allow teachers and experts to openly embrace communism shows that we are already losing. Try to tell people you were a capitalism to the soviets and see how long you last.
The Frankfurt school had been in the US since the thirties, barely "reformed" Trotskyites were also active, not to mention the pernicious influence of French theories in the sixties to eighties(namely Foucalt), had in their culmination, the academic-media-NGO leftist hydra we see today.

Another problem is that trades work is physically exhausting and destructive. What happens when you've been doing back breaking labor out of high school and by thirty your body is completely destroyed?

Now sure, not everyone ends up with a broken back and early onset arthritis, but a lot of young men will. That's going to tank any value they might have in the marriage market.
Do you actually know anyone who works a trade besides being a construction worker or iron monger? Most trades aren't any more physically demanding than an office job, and to the extent that they are, they're actually more likely to leave you in better long term health than sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day.

It's like College in general is a gigantic fucking money sink and the fact that any counseling for collegiate advice is an ass to receive and isn't mandatory just means any new college student is both confused and alone means they're probably going to yeet before you try and sink your money grubbing hands of them.

Women go to college, become Femminist Harpies that make Elaida from wheel of time look Warm and Fuzzy in comparison and Men decide "No..No thanks I am good on my own." and after that decide the whole "Work my ass off for money" is less attractive if you aren't getting pussy once in a while?

Truly a Plot Twist on par with Alfred Hitchcock.

I wander how sustainable this is going to be in the long run. If you have large sections of the female population eliminating themselves from the gene pool, and at the same time large amounts of men not even bothering to participate.

Anybody who says that trades pay less and generate less wealth than your average degree automatically gets their opinion invalidated.

Brb just got a call last week where I charged $280 an hour and $300 initially just to show up. Took about 5 hours, and only about 30% of that went to overhead costs and material. And that was only one call. Granted, I've been in the trade for 20+ years but I was a fuck up for a long while, so somebody more dutiful than me can surely do it sooner.

It's not glamorous but when manufacturers and plants are down, they shell out whatever it takes to get up and running again. OT is plentiful and, if you're good enough at your trade, demand is always there.

Additionally, since you're skipping college and going straight to the workforce, that's a good 5 years extra to build your wealth and invest early. Plus no student loans slowing you down.

Tradesmen are notorious for being shit with money (which is true) but if a young man out of high school plays his cards right, he'll be making at least $30/hr by 25, due to shortage of labor alone. Dump your money into index funds, purchase a house, max retirement accounts, and watch your wealth grow kiddo.

If you're not already actively rejecting modern society, you get what you fucking deserve.

I have no sympathy for men who go to (and thus directly fund) ivy league colleges, live in (and thus directly fund) leftist cities, and work for (and thus directly fund) anti-white, anti-male companies. You can't be a cog in the machine that's destroying the world while also lamenting that the world is being destroyed.

There are hundreds of thousands of job openings away from the cities, but nobody can be bothered because they'd rather live in their bug pods and endure their daily 3 PM dick flattening than give up the illusory safety of living as a modern day serf. I'll be watching the cities burn from afar, drowning in my own smug satisfaction.
Living outside of a big city?? Unheard of!! DUDE i just LOVE the hustle and bustle of the big city, it’s so DYNAMIC and makes me feel like i’m in one of my favourite TV SHOWS. you should totally come on down to my studio apartment, it’s got EXPOSED RED BRICK walls and everything, we can crack open a nice hoppy ipa or three and get crazy watching some cartoons on adult swim! and dude, dude, DUDE, we have GOTTA go down to the barcade- listen here, right, it’s a BAR where us ADULTS who do ADULTING can go DRINK. BUT!!!! it’s also an ARCADE like when we were kids, so we can play awesome VIDEO GAMES, without dumb kids bothering us. speaking of which megan and i have finally decided to tie the knot- literally -we’re both getting snipped tomorrow at the hospital, that way we can save money to spent more on ourselves and our FURBABIES. i’m fuckin JACKED man, i’m gonna SLAM this craft beer and pop another one!!!

60% of college students are women. That means that there are fewer "marriageable" men,. Then the ones that are marriageable treat women "badly" (note the sarcastic quotation marks) because women also don't want the ugly men, so there is like 8-10 women for each "marriageable" man, and the men don't need to settle.

This is sexist to women because how dare men get to be choosy.

I wish I was joking.

Men opt out of college; women most affected.

Men with college degrees have become so cocky that they’re ruining romance for their female counterparts, one “leading expert” alleges.

Just 40.5% of college students in the United States are male, according to the National Student Clearinghouse, meaning they’re in short supply and high demand when dating on campus.

A lack of competition has led these men to develop “golden penis syndrome” — an arrogance that stems from the assumption that a steady supply of females will be sexually interested in them.

“Golden penis syndrome” has led these smug males to engage in dastardly dating practices, such as cheating and ghosting, because they’re confident that another woman will always be waiting around the corner.

Outside of nursing, medical, and social services degrees, almost all degrees that women are getting are useless. There isn't any need for Gender Studies, Feminist Literature, or any other pointless woke degree.

Most guys I know are either opening their own businesses, going into skilled trades, or going into logistics (Shipping, trucking, ect), where no degree is required.

I mean what guy wouldn't want to go to college where it's taught that he's part of the evil Patriarchy, he has to walk on eggshells around endless amounts of troons, and any hookup with a hot coed could end up in a 'Me Too' if she regrets it later.
