To chimp in on the Dobson debate regarding his storytelling abilities:
As pointed out somewhere else, Alex is a complete asshole and cunt that is not even entertaining in her behavior. While looking through his dA archive, I stumbled e.g. over a "introduce your character" meme he did that featured Alex. It can be best described as the character explaining "I solve all my problems by killing people". So the hero of his wacky hijinx pirate comic we are all suposed to like is a blood thirsty killer to begin with. I get it, pirates are thieves who may also kill. But she obviously enjoys it too much. And that is an impression just build within the first introduction.
And this is just the peak of the iceberg when it comes to how Dobson sucks at writing his so called masterpiece pirate comic.
Peggy is a dirty man who molests everyone, Atea is a creepy lesbian who molests her supposed friend the captain, Sam is just there to be abused because that is hilarious and a storyarc that is supposed to be emotional moving because it features Sam saying his final farewells to a character he knew and died becomes meaningless for a couple of reasons, that involve e.g. a pirate gang based on lolcat images, the fact the story reveals Sam was kidnapped by Alex as a kid from around 15/16 and then kept as a slave (so he developed Stockholm Syndrom with Alex?) and the fact there is no connection between the reader and whoever Sam says his farewells to, because the "sister" he had was never introduced or hinted on.
I don't expect the guy to be the next Tolkien or so, but think about it like that: Most comic writers in some way, even webcomic artists, at least decide to sit down and work out a basic plotline for their stories and make notes on what their characters do and are connected, to avoid continuity errors and still tell a consistent story. Dobson went along with the idea that Alex may be mistaken for a dude by everyone because of a curse, without ever explaining the concept/show how it happened. And the idea itself was just the result of some stupid 13 year old fan mistaking her for a boy by accident once. Yet somehow Dobson thought that was the basis for a brilliant funny joke, probably because Ranma 1/2.
Worse examples are only Danny and Spot AND his SYAC masterpiece.
Danny and Spot was nothign else but this
Danny: I like PS3, because I think the Wii and Nintendo is just too silly and I am kind of a snob.
Spot: I am a Marsupilami rip off that loves playing Nintendo and I will make constant passive aggressive notions towards my friend for playing PS3 and point out the superiority of silly and fun games on the nintendo console compared to what we get on PS3, because PS3 is only good for shitty, depressive games, ignoring the actual quality of individual games in particular.
At least Buckley would go on to make a few jokes about games in particular and also point out pros and cons of them. Dobson just sucks on Nintendo's testicles and makes it come off as if you need to be send to reeducation camp because you dare to own more than one console to enjoy, because you can play Mario AND God of War anytime you want.
And SYAC has always been just Dobson's hug box and for years now soapbox to whine about sexism in the entertainment industry. Which is sad, cause the idea of a comic about some fictional character who wants to be a cartoonist and therefore goes to a school, goes through ups and downs, makes friends with other characters and learns things that the reader can actually also use for their own approach in trying to be artists (like certain techniques, trivia about famous cartoonists and styles and so on) sounds interesting to me. But as it is, it was just Dobson living in the past and being melancholic about the fact his life sucks, trying to find validation by telling about things he can do or likes, making his passive aggressive stand against manga/anime, boring us with his dull cllege experience, insulting his way more talented college roommate as a weirdo when in relaity he was a master who works now for Disney too. And now it is just him walking around as a rejected CareBear accusing everyone to be racist or sexist because if some creep fucks up once, that means everyone has fucked up, when in reality he did his inflation art and Alex is full of sexism and racism in itself.

R: Andrew Dobson is a terrible writer who can't write anything resemling a consistent plot, depending instead of stupid punchlines that make your Garfield comics more consistent looking. And yet he has the balls of accusing others to be not as talented as him?
