Nintendo has replied to a request for non-binary Pokemon, saying it would be “awesome”.

As shared on Twitter by the user Slate, their child wrote a hand written letter to Nintendo to ask them to include non-binary Pokemon.

A response came from Liz Daniels, consumer service representative at Nintendo of America

“I think that is an awesome idea,” reads the reply. “There are so many varieties of Pokémon, so it would make sense to have a variety of genders as well!

“We want to make sure people of all kinds feel welcomed and comfortable while playing our software. I’ll send your feedback to the appropriate departments to review and thoughtfully consider.”

Slate also shared images of the letter as proof against “all you doubters saying a kid didn’t write Nintendo asking for non-binary Pokemon”.

Although the first games in the series had male and female Nidoran, gendered Pokemon were introduced in full in generation two.

From then on, gender became an integral part of the game due to the breeding mechanic to spawn new Pokemon.

However, there are a few monsters that remain genderless, such as Ditto, Staryu, Voltorb and the legendary Mew.

For human characters, though, Pokemon’s first non-binary character was Blanche in Pokemon GO, the leader of Team Mystic.

Initially Nintendo had avoided using any pronouns for Blanche, but a blog post later used the pronouns they/them.

Fans took this as an indication that Blanche is non-binary. They also wear the colours white, blue and pink, which could represent the trans flag, with Blanche meaning white – the non-binary part of the flag.

Whether Nintendo and The Pokemon Company take this feedback on remains to be seen, but we certainly hope their response is an indication of becoming more open to progressive themes.

Ditto and a bunch of other Pokémon don't have genders.

Also this is just press and bullshit, Nintendo of America has no real control over Pokémon, and they'll get roasted if they try to pull translation funny business again.

The chances of that kid actually having wrote that are on par with the chances of China releasing the Uyghurs today.

I also don't believe the parent even plays pokemon. There's no shortage of pokemon that are genderless. It's all a gayop.

The kid totally wasn't instructed on what to write by the parent or something. Nope.

Also, why would a Pokémon care about its gender? They don't even speak (unless they're telepathic or the rare Meowth). Oh yeah, my Hatterene is totally nonbinary af yo "zey" came out last night uwu.

But these already exist? The article itself admits there's a number of species which have no gender and you're free to assume they're heckin cute and valid enbies or something. It's not like there's a point. The gender mechanic exists entirely for breeding purposes and animals cannot be trannies because they're irrational and cannot be pozzed and brainwashed by society. Lucky them.

Also whatever Nintendo of America says means jack shit because it's Game Freak and Nintendo of Japan who decide, and they're gonna tell them to fuck off if they raise the point.

Also also, this whore evidently made her kid write this for Internet asspats.

Nintendo of America? Not surprised.

And yeah, there already are "non-binary" monsters of the pocket like others said.

(I think Starmie was my favorite "genderless" one when I was younger.)

It was done nearly 20 years ago already.

It's hard to believe that Gen 3 is almost 20, and almost as old as Gen 1-2 now.

This is like your parents telling you they're considering getting you a kitten when you ask, except even less likely.

Companies cannot be this inept. There's no way that a kid wrote this.

They don't have to believe it. All they need to do to be the good guy is acknowledge it and proceed to never do anything.

Considering that Nintendo America has little control over Pokemon, I highly doubt this will fall through. If anything, their last translation fiasco should have been a lesson in itself.

Sure thing. This is just a PR stunt. Like when the little girl wrote to the Soviet Premier Yuri Andropov and she got a reply.

Whether Nintendo and The Pokemon Company take this feedback on remains to be seen, but we certainly hope their response is an indication of becoming more open to progressive themes.
They should make a competent game first, and not cut out like a lot of the pokemon creatures.

Sword and shield is just so lazy, especially as the first main line game for a home-ish console.

Why? We already have Voltorb and they even have the ability to kill themselves. You don’t get much more accurate than that.

They changed that a generation or two after. Gardevoirs are all female now, but there is a dorky looking male equivalent.
Nah Gardevoir still has a 50/50 gender split. Only males can evolve into Gallade with a Dawn Stone but either can evolve in Gardevoir via level up.

You sure you're not thinking Azurill? It was also Gen 3 and had a 75/25 female/male split but it's evos had 50/50 so a few females would suddenly evolve into males in those games. It was fixed in Gen 4 I believe.

Like how nintendos American branch is absolutely idiotic while segas murican branch was the sane one
