Don't a lot of artists with patreons offer stuff like WIPs, private streams, NSFW versions of art (if they're freakeh) and other fun little tidbits as well as early previews of new pieces? Isn't pateron just supposed to kind of be a tip jar to show you enjoy someone's work?
I always like to compare it to Dwarf Fortress Guy. Now Dwarf Fortress Guy is quite literally insane. But what does he do for a living? He makes a free game on the internet. What does he pull in? $3.5k a month (and that's just Patreon, he also accepts paypal donations). From 969 Patrons. And for every Patron who wishes it, him and his brother will write a short story or draw a (admittadly very crude) drawing of your choice.
But the point is both of these things have nothing to do with the product they are supporting (The Game), it's just done as a "thank you" to their supporters. Dobson's lack of success is purely down to his own laziness, and the fact that something as simple as "thank you" isn't in his vocabulary.
If he actually put effort in, he might be able to make something of himself. But it's much easier to play Splatoon all day and whine on twitter.
