We live in a world where our entertainment entertains us ironically. It doesn't just feel like games have this problem, but fiction in general. It all feels so narcissistic and caught up in huffing one's own farts, something renowned animation director Hayao Miyazaki complained about a scant few years ago. Couple this with how nearly everything is focus-tested and combed over with "sensitivity readers" to prevent offense and how risk-adverse so many industries have become, and it all feels so hollow compared to the fiction of yesteryear.
