🐱 J.K. Rowling’s Fatphobia Needs to Be Acknowledged, as Well - Fatties mad

J.K. Rowling has been dragged for her transphobia, and YouTubers Lindsay Ellis and ContraPoints have both released videos breaking down the issues with her statements, how it manifested in her work, as well as the harmful ways pop culture have contributed to this problem. However, in watching Ellis’s latest video, I was reminded that Rowling is fatphobic as hell.

In Harry Potter, there were so many characters who were fat that Rowling treated with overwhelming malice. Beauty is often shorthand for goodness, and while there were characters who were “gaunt,” there are also lots of fat jokes, from Dudley, Harry’s cousin, going from a spoilt fat child to a broad bully, to Uncle Vernon’s sister, an already fat woman, who Harry accidentally ballooned in anger. Let’s not forget when Dudley is given a curly pig tail for trying to eat some of Harry’s birthday cake. His heaviness is treated as a physical manifestation of his spoilt nature.

During the section in Lindsay Ellis’s video about Troubled Blood, the infamously 900+ page crime novel Rowling wrote under her pen name Robert Galbraith, there are multiple references to “obese” people in disparaging ways.

It’s gross, and while it is something that I know Harry Potter fans have discussed, with Rowling’s transphobia coming to the forefront recently, this is a good time to address the other issues. For so long, the nostalgia and love of this series has protected it and its author. There was an automatic idea that Rowling was coming from a place of good faith criticism. So when marginalized people, especially when they were BIPOC spoke up about it, we were silenced because the series was supposed to stand for inclusion and anti-bigotry.

As someone who loved Harry Potter, I never saw loving it and being critical of it as opposites, which, in the long run, has served me well. Rowling is not the first human being to allow their personal biases and internalized phobias leak onto the written page. We all have to work to unlearn those things.

Yet, as we have seen evident as her work has continued, she still puts the same fatphobic and “not like other girls” mentalities into her work. Part of that came from decades of going unscrutinized due to being automatically viewed as being on the “right side” of the fight. Well, now she isn’t.

Does this mean you can’t still love Harry Potter? No. That’s a personal choice for you, but it does mean that the things fandom once hand-waved because “Harry Potter is about combating racism” need to be relooked at—not just by the marginalized and BIPOC fans who have always been alert to this, but by those who told us we were reaching and promoting bigotry by even bringing it up. Be a fan, but also, do the work, if not for yourself, for the fellow fan in your community who you once spoke down to.

They'll never be happy with JK. Why even botter. I know she's basically given up.

Doesn't Lindsay have ties to TMS? I think she's written a few articles for it.

Just don't read her stuff, just ignore her, how hard is that?

Oh but these are so important works to who we are as people that the community really has a sort of ownership of them and furthermore...

I don't even like Harry Potter or JK but this shit's just going overboard. Its all ironic in a way. Rowling spent years trying to appease this crowd and just a few years ago she was being celebrated as being ultra woke for making Gandalf into a fag and posting rainbows all over social media, but now she's practically every buzzword under the sun: Racist (Dobby/no non-caucasoid leads), Trannyphobic (no trannies/social media activity), Anti-Semitic (Goblins), Ableist (Muggles), Xenophobic (wizard borders), Sexist (having all the girls hook up with guys), Islamophobic (burqas are suspicious) and even homophobic for not making Gandalf a fag sooner.

What hasn't she been accused of being?

Fail one purity test.. fail them all.

If you don't worship trannies, you hate them and want them dead, obviously.

And if you want trannies dead, you also want to kill women, minorities, puppies, the left-handed, and anyone who enjoys sunny days too.

Apologize if you wish, it won't be enough, it's never enough, EVER.

Fat phobia is natural because fat people are naturally unhealthy.
It's also a fundamental incongruity, people are not "afraid" of fat people, they don't "fear" what a fat person might do, beyond getting to the cake before them and leaving none to share.

Fat activists and their snowflake kin aped the "transphobia" approach for pity points and to make it seem like they were being oppressed just as badly. "It worked for THEM, so it'll surely work for us" But, while people were being legit murdered for being gay, out of fear that you'd catch "the gay" from a homosexual, nobody has ever been murdered in the street for being fat and ignorant masses thinking the fat might spread to them... it just did not, and continues to not happen. Also, you can point to objective evidence that being fat comes with a slew of negative health problems, whereas there's no health problem that comes directly from being gay, you have to have poor hygiene/habits to manifest poor health, just like everyone else. You don't automatically take years off your life by being gay, but you demonstrably to by being overweight.

The attempt to put "fat hating" on the same level as "gay hating" doesn't work and never will, knock it off, stop even humoring it....

These people are lazy crybabies, which is why they're fat in the first place.

Learned helplessness/lack of agency after being too lazy to step up and self-actualize.

TLDR - I have relatives who are morbidly obese, I don't fear them, I fear how little time I have left with them because they are killing themselves.

Well of course there's no fatties in a fictional universe where magic exists. If I gained 20 pounds from being lazy and eating Doritos, yeah, I'd use a magic wand to make my love-handles disappear too.

I had heard that when Rowling started writing Harry Potter, she did it on coffee shop napkins because she was too poor for something more durable. If that were the case, I'd assume the issue is more that Dudley is rich enough to be gluttonous as fat while she has to scrounge around just obtain the paper she'd put the concept of "Dudley" on.

Turns out that napkin thing was a lie though so I guess it's just that she made a big mean character. Meh. Hagrid is a big nice character. (I know he's a giant, but I still wouldn't call him buff or otherwise conventionally attractive...)
