Brian Cox says physics 'ruled out' the human soul at particle level

LIFE after death theories collapse under scientific scrutiny because the field of particle physics has "ruled out" the possibility of humans having a soul, renowned physicist Brian Cox has claimed.

Questions about the afterlife remain unanswered with the jury still out on whether life after death is real. Many people claim to know what happens when we die, based on anecdotal evidence and stories from so-called near-death experiences or NDEs. People who have stood on the brink of death often recall visions of bright lights or memories of seeing their deceased loved ones.

NDEs are often reported by people who have gone into cardiac arrest or were briefly declared clinically dead while on the operating table.

In some instances, the visions and memories are very detailed, such as the man who claimed he met Satan in hell.

The medical sciences have tried to explain these phenomena through residual brain activity or chemical reactions triggered by intense trauma.

Particle physicist and TV presenter Brian Cox has, however, taken the discussion one step further and explained why there is no measurable evidence of humans having souls that could live on after death.

The popstar-turned-scientist appeared on the Joe Rogan Podcast where he discussed the idea of humans having souls, among other topics.

In his estimate, there is no observable force - the soul - that interacts with the human body at the subatomic level.

If such a force existed within us, it would strongly react with the particles our bodies are made of.

Instead, physicists have so far only observed four fundamental forces governing this world - gravity, the weak and strong nuclear force, and electromagnetism.

None of these forces could explain the concept of a soul trapped inside the body.

Professor Cox, who teaches at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester, said: "So, here is my arm. It is made of electrons and protons and neutrons.

"If I have a soul in there, something we don't understand but it's a different kind of energy or whatever it is we don't have in physics at the moment.

"It interacts with matter because I'm moving my hand around.

"So whatever it is, it is something that interacts very strongly with matter."

Professor Cox went on to say scientists have made ultra-high precision measurements looking for a fifth force of nature, but have not found one.

Consequently, the human soul can be ruled out on the most fundamental level imaginable.

The physicist added: "If you want to suggest there's something else that interacts with matter strongly, then I would say that it's ruled out.

"I would go as far as to say it is ruled out by experiments.

"Or at least it is extremely subtle and you would have to jump through a lot of hoops to come up with a theory of some stuff that we wouldn't have seen when we've observed how matter interacts."

According to one theory, NDEs are caused by residual brain activity even when the body is shutting down.

Some researchers have proposed the visions and memories are hallucinations caused by not enough oxygen flowing into the brain.

Similarly, some theories speculate NDEs are hallucinations caused by brain cell death.

A more out-there theory suggests the dying body synthesises the psychoactive chemical N,N-Dimethyltryptamine or DMT.

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) researchers Neil Dagnall and Ken Drinkwater said: "Currently, there is no definitive explanation for why near-death experiences happen.

"But ongoing research still strives to understand this enigmatic phenomenon."

"Oh-Oh yeah science guy if you're so smart why don't you know literally everything got em few that was close"

Souls are the ultimate form of copium.

Oh no! I'm going to die one day and can't do anything to stop it! I-its OK tho because I'll totally go to a better place once that happens! Trust the plan!
Oh no! People are living hedonistic sinful lives while I'm stuck here doing work! I-its OK tho because they'll get punished while I'm at the good place! Trust the plan!
Oh no! Terrible things are happening all the time but its just a test trust the plan its OK man!
There's no way to prove or disprove the existence of God. We only know like less than .01% of the universe and its laws. You could say or believe that he does or doesn't exist and theorize about it, but no one has definitive proof that either of those are correct.

All this article pretty much just reiterates is that, " Fuck I dunno, maybe there's a soul, but currently there is no evidence for it." Which is a purely rational explicitation that doesn't merit any type of reiteration. I respect that this guy pursed science later in his life and he didn't let his dream of learning about the universe get thrown to the side. To be fair I've read the quantum universe and it's a pretty interesting book. Though, how does he know that the soul is a physical phenomena that couldn't be rooted in the way that our brains interface at an ethereal level.

Sort of like a peer to peer phenomenon, that we are all just our individual reference frames are just nodal in nature, to a bigger more sophisticated network. Asserting the NDE or OBE experience as a way of the brain coping at brain death in an elaborate hallucination seems pointless from an ingrained survival instinct, because aren't a lot of our neurotransmitters and networks wired for the element of survival instinct. What would be the point of our psychology to produce a vivid hallucination of an afterlife, if essentially the comm link gets broken anyways?

There is some fascinating work in regards of the conjecture surrounding this topic that Cox fails to even mention. Rogan also had Sir Roger Penrose on a couple of years ago when he discussed some of his work in regards of the emperors new mind that tries to address some of the conjecture in a balanced manner in regards of the origin and physical phenomena that could explain consciousness. Sir Roger Penrose made a pretty good talk on the necessity to further enhance the limited model that is modern physics.

Here's another facinating talk by Dr Stuart Hameroff that also goes deeper into his work on microtubules.

There is also another scientist that wrote a pretty interesting series of books I am going to be picking up soon on his theory of Biocenterism. Here are some of the Books he has on Amazon. These are some pretty interesting thought experiment of the functionality of consciousness and how it applies to humans.

Robert Lanza isn't just some quack like some of these new age grifting faggots like a David Wilcox, or a MSM scientist like the edgy Pop Star Turned Scientist towing, "meh science" line. Lanza has quite an interesting career in regenerative medicine and stem cell research. He actually collaborated on some papers with one of the most prominent men in modern psychology B.F. Skinner. So there is certain weight to these ideas.

The nothing burger articles like this are something that bother me to just have people bickering about the same old tired ideas and models. Now the root to the soul question would be the function of consciousness, and whether or not there is some sort of causal link in regards of there being external mechanism that propagates it for some odd reason. The mind body problem is one of the biggest problems in modern science and it would be notable that asking a particle physicist this type of question, is like asking a accountant to work in an organic chemistry lab to synthesize ibuprofen.

He answered the question appropriately enough in regards that as far as modern physics is concerned. Though him assuming it would have to go beyond the scope of the 4 fundamental forces is madding.

He doesn't. He only used the soul concept based on religion. That's like "proving" that Jesus didn't really turn water into wine. What a surprise; something humans made up doesn't exist.

Well that tends to be a lot of the issue when it comes to these mainline tv scientists. Hence I reframe to my previous post expanding on that concept based in science a bit further.

Just because we haven't detected something yet doesn't mean it's not there, our scientific understanding of the world 100 years ago was completely different than today and it'll be completely different in another 100 years too.

It definitely seems incredibly arrogant and close minded to me to assume that we have a fairly full scope of reality today, we almost assuredly don't.

If you ask me all you have to do is look at a person's eyes or even an animal's eyes that there's something there, there's some essence beyond our physical selves that give us our consciousness.

Ah, I see we have a new age attention seeking "Pluto is now not a planet because I say so" type of cunt "scientist" here.

My scientific calculations indicate there are two types of journalists, ones who camp on twitter finding shit to be outraged by, and ones who camp on the Joe Rogan Experience looking for shit they can take out of context. Both types are faggots.

Richard Feynman disagreed. And he was both a better scientist AND a better musician than Brian Cox, who can suck his balls in the afterlife.

Multiple parallel quantum worlds is the same shit; but scientist cling to parallel galaxies as like a weird sort of surrogate afterlife.
Jesus christ. Many worlds is one of several different and mutually exclusive interpretations of quantum mechanics. It's not even the most popular by any means. That title goes the Copenhagen interpretation which doesn't have any of that "parallel universe" woo-woo.
I honestly can't blame you for thinking parallel universes is accepted science. I blame Science!(tm) journalism for constantly pushing the flashy shit while the more mundane (and more plausible) ends up on the sidelines.
Most physicists don't believe in multiple universes.
Most physicists don't think the universe came out of literal "nothing."
Most physicists don't even accept fucking string theory despite how popular it is in popsci.

I will be taking my tophats with pride now.

To be fair to Brian Cox, if he's right and there's no soul then there's also no free will. Therefore he literally has no choice but to spout this crap, any more than a piece of sodium can choose to react when you drop it in some water.

We're all just molecules and chemicals bouncing off of each other in some big galactic test tube, and he is predestined and predetermined by natural laws to spoil your elderly mother's Saturday afternoon by telling her that when she dies it's just infinite nothingness.

So, y'know, don't hold it against him or anything.

Not to put words in your mouth, but the belief in an omniscient god who can predict the future (if that is what you believe) also strongly implies a lack of free will. If your future is pre-determined, you don't have free will.

Mate, I have no clue what's going on! And no real strong beliefs about this one way or the other really. In fact, people with strong beliefs, like Cox, kinda fascinate me. My degree was in physics, and while we certainly know a heck of a lot about the natural world, in my experience the further you go, the weirder everything gets. It's really interesting to me that apparently you reach a point in science where you see a certain number of mass spectrographs or whatever, and you suddenly think "yeah, I've got all this shit figured out now". And you're so confident in that assertion that you'll literally go on record saying there is no soul.

Just like radiation didn't exist until we found it. Before we found it, it was a myth and a lie, but now we can find it, its all real.

I don't even believe in God and I can see this line of thinking is fucking stupid.

Oh yeah. There is a lot of Dunning-Kruger involved here. "we have no evidence of a soul" is miles apart from "we have evidence there is no soul."
I agree this guy is jumping the gun, and its holder, and the battalion behind him. We currently have a basic foundation for how the brain works and experiment to back it up. But such a complex system is beyond our grasp to fully understand at the moment. It can be argued that this "5th force" is entirely localized in our brains for some weird ass reason that we still don't understand. And maybe this ties into consciousness and its (presumed) ability to actually influence how those neurons interact with one another. But at the moment we have no evidence for this and also no plausible mechanism for how this even would work.
