I've seen enough "Making of" videos to still believe Doug's working as hard as he thinks he can. Several Nostalgia Critic episodes were recorded during conventions or when he was too sick to speak because weekly deadlines were that important to him. His workaholism was his downfall on several occasions. It's not an issue of having more work to do. Doug always thinks he can handle more work if it means more $$$. The only problem is that working outside of your brand usually means less $$$.The thing with rebranding & creating a new persona/YouTube channel is that it involves work. And Doug has never been too keen on the way 'work' thing, beyond doing what he has to turn out his usual content. The anniversary specials were largely run by/organized by people other than Doug because Doug just wanted to write & direct. Yes, a 'movie' is different from a YouTube channel, but the concept of abandoning his persona, his logo, his 'trademarks' (because a lot of that probably goes along with the IP), his shtick, his catchphrase...I could see him just thinking it's all too much work so he just sticks it out with Michaud. The devil you know beats the devil you don't.
