Does anyone else genuinely miss the 2000s?

Of a song about pissin'
I got the peein', leakin', reekin'
And there's juice in the kitchen

Even all these years later I can remember that verse from the "Piss on You Remix" song off by heart. An acquaintance and I in high school would sing that all the time on the bus and crack everyone up.

I miss being excited, and feeling like I'm living in the future. I miss being excited over things like DVDs and PS2.

It's funny to look back at how exciting DVD was when it was new, you can pause and the image will stay clear! The picture is clear! It doesn't degrade over time! Special features! Director's commentaries!

2016 was the last time Twitter and Reddit were open platforms, and MDE could get on the air.

Now "algorithms" have taken over the internet and the only reasonable places for discussion are boards like KF.

2016 is when things started falling hard, even though Trump announced his candidacy in 2015 nobody really took him that seriously, it was only when Trump got the actual nomination in 2016 was it truly on "like Donkey Kong"

I saw that evolution firsthand as a particular forum I was a member of had it's members turn on each other, longtime members got banned for having wrong opinions, the discourse just became more and more tense and more and more toxic, beyond that websites all over started getting more and more bald faced with propaganda, with the message of "you better not vote for Trump" becoming louder and clearer.

In addition to that I feel like the all female Ghostbusters and the climate surrounding it was a real turning point for pop culture going woke, as well as, even though it wasn't released until the following year, The Last Jedi was filmed in 2016 which need I say more?

While 2017 turned out to be a really interesting year for video games, everything has basically been a nightmare since 2016, 2015 was a mixed bag, things were already getting pretty woke, but it was in hindsight not such a bad year at all, I miss it.

I know that exact feeling with the forum thing. One group I used to be in, I got to see the ground zero of the turning point with my own eyes on election night. What will always be burned into my mind was one fellow who for the few years or so I've known him, was a calm and collected person who rarely if ever showed anger towards anybody or anything.

His reaction to the results, it's like a hidden switch was flipped. Complete and utter TDS out of nowhere. Dude was practically frothing at the mouth and swearing like a sailor to the point where it felt like a different person entirely got into his account. Same story can be said for far too many people I'm sure. The rampant divides that erupted between folks over the past four years just over stupid goddamn politics; the only way I could describe it is, heartbreaking...

It is heartbreaking, I saw that change happen to a lot of people, either people I communicated with personally or people I followed online.

I foolishly tried to stick with some of these places for a few more years despite the changes for the worst, this finally came to a head last year when I had a bad break up with a group of online guys whom I had known for a decade and who I honestly considered to be friends, I'm still really bitter about that, afterward I found my way here and the rest is history lol.

It is definitely heartbreaking when people you used to like reveal themselves to be assholes, especially when it's personal.

Pretty much.

Pros:

Music was far better, there was no shite like Grime being spun as the greatest thing ever. TV was better with actual comedy on as opposed to woke bullshit that is on today. The troon awakening didn't pollute gay bars and pride etc. Video games were more original and micro transactions didn't ruin everything, apart from Myspace and LiveJournal internet insanity was contained to a few stupid forums. People actually debated things instead of streaking at each other (cough Thornberg)

Cons

Terrible government in my country (we got dragged into Bush's wars), Crap internet, no streaming services, phones that could only really text, call and browse a rubbish version of the internet, boring cars, and questionable subcultures (I am talking as an admitted scene kid)

Even if coronapanic ends, what's normal keeps getting worse. Things sucked in the '00s, but compared to just 10-20 years ago, it's a dystopian nightmare now. Each "new normal" makes this place more insane and hellish. And the scumbags in power and influence driving it this way are going to keep at it.

Smartphones and social media are eating society alive.

The "Internet Of Things" allows appliances to spy on you.

"Social engineering" and AI "algorithms" making software and search engines stupider.

It's now normal to have some kind of electronic device on your person every waking moment.

A level of censorship previously only seen in commie crapholes.

An endless recession.

Skyrocketing cost of living.

Homelessness on the rise.

An endless "war on terror".

Freakish tattoos and piercings are normal.

Everyone is fat.

Endless "social justice" seeing the world through "problem glasses", making previously accepted behaviors into some kind of discrimination or oppression.

Male sexuality is far more demonized as "creepy" and "sexist".

#MeToo.

Black Lives Matter (more than others).

Everyone is so divided by sex and race.

You're seen as an "alt-right misogynist white supremacist fascist Nazi" if you dare to wear a "Make America Great Again" cap.

Media after media going "woke" (and broke).

Everything seems so corporate, mild, and sanitized.

Di$ney seems to be taking over Western media.

Clown car elections.

Politics so divisive that people seriously consider the possibility of civil war.

"Social distancing".

"Zoom meetings".

Mandatory muzzles face masks.

"Temporary" closures - even of outdoor things like gazebos and chlorinated swimming pools.

Biology being seen as a biohazard.

And of course, endless new buzzwords.

I hate Current Year.

The internet culture of the 2010s has tried to make things look way worse than they honestly are in reality. Most people who have a life outside of sperging on websites like reddit, tumblr, twitter, 4chan or lolcow where people don't spend enough time outside in the real world are probably just good people. Many really couldn't give a shit about the stupid identitarian and political debate shit on the Internet, they'd rather live their life in peace. However, dogma thrives on the Internet. Anyway, wasn't the 2000's Internet culture basically funny cat photos, YouTube videos, instant messaging, and nothing else?

If we wanna get into the cons of the 2000s, beyond the obvious stuff, which is something I've been wanting to do but debating whether to make a new thread or not, but I guess I'll just make a post.

Anyway, what sucked about the 2000s (again, beyond the obvious things) is before America was bitterly divided over race and gender, we were bitterly divided over Religion, all the Atheism vs Christianity battles fought in the 2000s were just as tiresome as today's culture war battles, it was like giving us an early preview of today's bitterly divided society.

And secondly there was a deep strain of very bitter cynicism in 2000s culture, an "everything sucks" mentality many had that just comes off as so dated now considering how comparably better things were than today.

Ironically a lot of those 2000s cynics would go on to become SJWs I've noticed, with the throughline being a miserable, joyless fuck I guess.

I think I'd rather have that than endless identity politics and social media attention whoring any day of the week. When you didn't constantly see drivel like like "this small amount of fanservice is horribly sexist" or "Taco Tuesday is racist!".

I miss '00s internet.

I built my dvd collection soully on the idea that I would be able to extract a library of cinematography stills at "almost preservation" quality 🤦🏻‍♂️

If I am not mistaken, the old atheists were actually a big reason for the push into politics. I remember a split in that community. I think many went Republican (surprisingly), but the point still stands, the degradation of the old atheism debaters in some ways lead us to where we are now.

Yeah, "Atheism+" (as in "plus social justice") was a notorious forerunner of what we now know as internet SJWism.

As I've mentioned a few times, I believe the Kitzmiller v. Dover decision in 2005 was the end of the George W. Bush-era culture wars. Once Christian fundamentalism ran out of steam in the US legal system, all those online fedora-tippers turned their forces outward in search of a new war.

Interestingly, if you plot some frequencies on Google Ngrams, you see SJW shibboleths like "intersectionality" and "microaggressions" really start to take off right around that same time:
https://books.google.com/ngrams/gra...tart=1980&year_end=2019&corpus=26&smoothing=3
These terms had been around since the '70s and '80s, but only really broke out into the mainstream in 2005. I couldn't think of any other good "SJW-only" words, I'm open to suggestions here.

But on the other hand, gender neologisms took off a bit later, roughly around 2012:
https://books.google.com/ngrams/gra...ender;,c0;.t1;,agender;,c0;.t1;,aromantic;,c0
Again, I tried to restrict it only to words normal people wouldn't use.

It seems to me that the decade 2005-2015, very roughly, holds the key to what's currently ailing society.

EDIT: Incidentally, "social justice" itself doesn't follow this schema, it's been on a steady upswing since 1980, but actually flattened out for a bit from 2005-2010.

Come to think of it, you might be onto something with that one. Bush losing the majority of his support in the second term, the Dover decision, and the Great Recession were all more or less the decisive defeats for the Religious Right.

The legalization of same-sex marriage at the federal level in 2015 was the coup de grace and the last real big obstacle in general. After that, everything kicked into overdrive with the Woke Left. You already had a lot of the earliest elements like Atheism+, the subversion of Occupy Wall Street, Saint Anita's crusade, the internet baby tantrums over GamerGate, and the early years of BLM.

Then after 2015, we saw everything kick into high gear with Trump's candidacy and the legalization of same sex marriage in every state

I’m honestly not sure if things were actually any better then than they are now, or if I was just too young and ignorant to really know what was going on and have become cynical with age, but things certainly seemed a lot simpler - from my experience it stuck around in the early 2010s for a while too, for that’s when I started getting into fandom communities on the internet as a young teenager, and none of the flame wars that happen now over someone having the wrong opinion were present, nor was the woke culture that’s crept its way into places it really doesn’t belong.

Livejournal, Gaia Online and Fanfiction.net were my shit back then, and I don’t remember a single instance of pronouns in bio or listing off your “privileged” and “oppressed” identities, and all lowercase cry typing was pretty much limited to the 3edgy5me emo and scene kids. Internet nerd culture was a place to connect with like minded people and have a few laughs, none of this oppression Olympics crap, and if someone was gay or trans it rarely came up and wasn’t a huge deal. I lost several good friends to the identity politics craze once Tumblr became really popular, replacing Livejournal as the blogging site of choice, and shifted from a website for hipsters and nerds to a feminist echo chamber.

So much this. Most people are not raving plebbit commie lunatics like people seem to think here. It honestly concerns me that people think this, and I just want to say please go outside.

From a personal perspective, I grew up with left wing parents in a Liberal Democrat voting constituency in the UK. This is the sort of situation where troons and commies would be more common than usual, but I still don't know any. Furthermore, I didn't run into any of them at university either. The most I saw were "woke" posters stuck on walls. That's not to say I've never met crazy people. I've briefly known an Islamist, a commie, and a 4chan brony sperg in real life before, and they behaved pretty much like the cows on here, but I didn't stick around any of them in the long run.

I understand that US politics is a lot angrier than British, but even then there's no way that crazy troons are over 1% of the population. Most people literally never encounter them at all except in passing.

I think the shift from LJ to Tumblr as a primary blogging site was a huge factor in the surge of the style of "woke"/SJ culture becoming mainstream. The mindset definitely existed on LJ in its hayday, though it was limited to separate communities instead of posted on a Tumblr blog where it's easily shared via reblog or tag searching. So basically, the worst of LJ made its way to Tumblr to create the worst of Tumblr where they were able to find a larger audience and spread their influence faster due to how the site worked.

I do miss 00s internet. Social media is the primary reason why the Golden Age of the internet ended I think.

Like I said earlier, 1600s - 1930s was the best timeline. Everything went to hell in the 1940s with WWII where millions of people died trying to save kikes and gypsies in some brother war for the Jews leading to Hitler's defeat, the civil rights movement, desegregation, white flight from the cities to the suburbs, then later the Cold War, etc. By the 1950s, America was dead and same could be said for the rest of the world, see Brown v. Board of Education and that traitor Eisenhower. Any decade after that has been garbage.

I'm convinced the porn ban on Tumblr was deliberate to drive all the nutjobs to Twitter, aka the most public and trendy social media site in existence, with the specific goal of spreading the degeneracy that Tumblr incubated on a much wider scale and make it appear as if said degeneracy is normal and acceptable since it was made out to be far more common than it really is.
