🎨 Artcow Terry Reitz / JDR / Jennifer Diane Reitz / Chatoyance - The Original Crazy Tranny; Creator of The Conversion Bureau

One half gushing about No Man's Sky, the other half kvetching about coronavirus. Aside from her DA and her fimfiction account, Jennifer's reddit account is the only place where she's active. On most of her opinions, she's surprisingly thoughtful. That's what sets her apart from the majority of reddit. The same can't be said for her views on religion.

This one was posted last week, I think.
escapism.JPG

It's kind of sad, really. The stigma against being trans in the 70s & 80s must have really done a toll on her mind.
escapism2.JPG

I don't know what it takes to view Equestria as your ideal paracosm. But I have to step back and admire how invested she is in her attempts to fathom heaven.
escapism3.JPG

Again, she reveals her age. "sports, television shows, sex and expensive possessions", oh, get with the times. The last two may be true, but the rest could be replaced with social media and video games. But she's essentially a time traveller from the 80s, so I suppose that's what most people associated with happiness then. Her hobbies, now mainstream, must have been the domain of intellectuals and outcasts.

escapism4.JPG

For someone to romanticize escapism like that... Hey, I've seen that among quite a few fantasy authors, brooding teenagers, but all of them seem like poseurs who can't hold a candle in comparison to her steely dedication. And as somebody with high-functioning autism I can, albeit distantly, sympathize with her plight.

If JDR can get more emotional high from his self-induced unrequited yearning for "utopia" than from what the material world can offer, and if he can survive independently, I won't take issue at that. What I will take issue at is the fact that he is dependent on other people to finance his day dreaming-lifestyle. He is, in effect, sacrificing the well-being of others to promote his own.

There's a strong undercurrent of "other people last" in JDR's fiction. The concerns of any protagonist vastly put themselves and the few people they know above institutional justice, even when they are the targets of unjust institutions. I think the core arc of hers is "me and the lads scrap around until an out-of-context-problem hits the fat cats".

You don't say?
courage.gif

...Honestly, what kind of point is she trying to make here? JDR must have had some serious confidence issues in the past to be this vindictive to somebody who does, what - act a little boastful before getting injured? Empathy for me and my band of self-proclaimed outcasts. None for the people who put their lives on the line for their fellow man. So screw 'em! Screw 'em every way! If he had acted reluctant, he would be called a coward. In the eyes of a vindictive person prone to projecting their qualities on others, nobody is good or courageous, no matter their actions.

If you saw a teenage boy get seriously mauled by an animal, you wouldn't mock them by saying they wore, in JDR's own words the "Red Badge of Idiocy", would you?

I suppose she picked this up from manga. Overly brash dude gets horribly maimed for not being meek, then is forgotten for the rest of the comic. Protagonists being held to lower moral standards.

It's weird to think about how long JDR has been in the periphery of my life. As a kid, I loved shareware games. One of the games I had was Boppin', a puzzle-platformer hybrid published by Apogee. Even as a kid, something struck me as off, the logo of the company was a bloody teddy stabbed with a knife, the game included a lengthy manifesto about games being for adults and games being art, and when you lost a life, the characters would commit suicide with a gun or a a sword. Later versions of the game were changed by request of Apogee, removing the bear and suicide graphics, although they could be re-enabled with a command. JDR later called this "censorship".

My only experience with JDR prior had been from reading relevant articles on ED and the Bad Webcomics Wiki, so when Ross Scott (!!) reviewed Boppin' of all games it was a mindfuck of the highest order when I saw the name on the credits list.

I was a bit too young for web 1.0, so the only statement I can really contribute to discussion about JDR is that he's proof positive that anything - from intelligence to artistic talent to even a million-dollar windfall - means jack and shit if you're completely insane on top of that. Such is the nature of the lolcow. *sigh*

Personally, I think JDR barely fits the conventional definition of a lolcow. While it's theoretically possible to follow her to laugh at her failed projects and what's known of her trainwreck personal life, it's not her main attraction. She has enormous amounts of creativity and just barely enough self-discipline to put it to use. She does not evoke laughter in most observers, but instead jealousy at her imagination and sadness at how it was ultimately squandered. JDR is both a warning and something that's impossible for most lolcows to be: an aspirational figure.

Are you kidding me? I have a small measure of respect for JDR as well, and she's also the only tranny I willingly use the female pronouns for. But fuck me! Read 'Kokoro Wish' and '12 impossible things before breakfast' again and then tell me she's not a lolcow.

The biggest problem is that most of her crazy funny stuff was lost in the past, only what's on Jenniverse and some of the webcomic critique sites that are still running or searchable on the Internet Archive. All the Portal of Evil stuff is lost and much more besides.
There have been Lolcows that have accomplished things to aspire to before, Terry Davis coded up a fucking viable operating system which is actually used unironically by some people, and the man was crazy as crazy could be, and a lolcow through and through.

I agree, she is a lolcow, but a unusual one. Even though most of the stuff from her is from the past, she's still active and in a state of what could be called semi-dignified retirement. She still lists all her accomplishments in her profile, but it feels like it's more to maintain continuity of Internet identity rather than trying to cling to relevance. Her MLP fanfiction still stands out, but it's not as unique as her previous work. She's a shadow of what she used to be, both in her successes and failures. Part of it might be that she's 60 now, but that's at best a partial explanation. Somehow, she has managed to calm down her craziness while still retaining the core of it. We'll most likely never know what happened, since at some point since the Kokoro Wish comic, she has learned to offer less insight into her personal life, especially when it involves other people. I think it's telling that even though she's still an active lolcow, the majority of this thread is reminiscing about her past glories rather than what she's doing right now. Fading away gracefully is a trait so rare among lolcows that JDR should be noted as being almost unique.

Which is amusing. She claims to be more rational minded than most yanks today, but she too is just as guilty of magical thinking.

It's okay when I believe stuff that I can't rationally explain!
It's a shame because her views back then didn't line up with the tumblrshite that she has gotten embroiled in. In fact, she was much more reasonable, aside from her massive ego, her views as espoused in her comics would be much more, if I daresay, redpilled by today's standards. Recently, I played Boppin', which would have done really well as a mobile game.

The main villain, Hunnybunz, kidnapped all the villains from video game universes around the multiverse. Now the heroes have nobody to fight. Hunnybunz thinks he's doing good because there is no evil to corrupt people's minds via fiction. But when the protagonists Yeet and Boik step up to him, he breaks down into a murderous rage, becoming evil himself. Hunnybunz, in his censorious rampage, is so certain of his own righteousness that he does not stop to check if his actions align with his values, much like today's SJWs. If JDR's attitude regarding this remained the same for three more decades, perhaps she would be more, in modern terms, based and redpilled.

She was a far more reasonable person in her webcomic days.

People still fuss over the content of video and computer games. The question of whether or not computer games somehow make people, which usually means children -even though the average game player is between the ages of 18 and 36- violent rages on. It is a ridiculous question in the first place, not only because few young children actually buy and play such games compared to adults young and old, it is ridiculous because the the very question itself stems from a deep ignorance of humanity itself.

One problem, I think, many people have with the concept of violent games, and by extension, violent media of all kinds, is the illusion that violence is external and apart from what it means to be human.

There is this dream, this falsehood, that somehow we are taught violence, that intrinsically humans are not naturally violent, and that if only our culture could rid itself of all expressions of violence, violent behavior would go away, people would live in a golden age of peace, and that ultimately, violence is something unnatural.

One thing that deeply disturbs me currently is that the capacity to have differing opinions yet remain social seems to be vanishing. Much has been made of how polarized American society is, and I am coming to realize just how profound that seems to be.

The illegally appointed president-by-coup, George Bush, is oft quoted for his 'You're either with me, or your against me' verbiage and outlook, and I am finding too much of this same feeling in the world around me. It seems that far too many people, faced with a disagreement over a given topic, will make that disagreement the basis for the entire dismissal of another person or an entire social environment.

The old chestnut of "let us agree to disagree" seems to have vanished in place of "my way or the highway". I find myself saddened, and appalled, at the spoiled child attitude of having emotions so ruffled by disagreement that the only solution is to pick up one's metaphorical ball and run home. What happened to people? What happened to the notion that debate and disagreement are fine, and that a person, or a social environment, is not defined purely by one lone offense, or should be abandoned because of one, or even several, insoluble differences of outlook?

The pressure to retain popularity and avoid rejection or conflict by either becoming mute, or by falsely agreeing, or by becoming devoid of any solid opinion seems to be epidemic to me. How did such shallow, fearful, or wishy-washy behavior become so acceptable, and just when did strong character, individuality, and acceptance of divergent opinion become criminalized?

A person is not defined only by their politics, their religion, their occupation, or their opinions, but by all of these things, and more - a person is complex beyond measure, a universe unto themselves. A person contains multitudes, and just because some given, emotionally charged element cannot be agreed upon is a weak reason to abandon discourse.

Diversity is a rose, it comes with thorns. You have to expect to get the odd prick now and then, and accept it gracefully...the fact of having to deal with thorns is not reason enough to loath flowers altogether.

Or so is my opinion on the matter, which you may resolutely disagree with...and if you do, I would not feel the need to flee from you.

Do you think an SJW would say either of these things? Ironically, what she said so long ago is much needed this current year.

And let's not forget the Unicorn Jelly forums. Barely any of it was preserved in Waybackmachine. There used to be fanfictions, fanart, and even an RPGmaker game that never saw the light of day. I have considered making a discord server to gather up the UJ and PDH fan diaspora, given that nostalgia is a powerful force, so we could perhaps pick up her multiverse where she once left.

And as an added bonus, i'd like to note that these two blokes:

I just remember her from the old 'Your Webcomic is bad and you should feel bad' page that was a thing for a couple of weeks, probably around 2012/3. It had the kokoro comic, and the one where she described and drew how she saw herself, as an amorphous blob of an alienesque creature.

It was a shock to me back then that someone could have such a self-image. Now, it's woefully mundane, and it's more surprising that there's no rule 34 of it.

God, the internet is a cesspool of exceptionalism.

Derek Smart, JDR...man it's like old home week for PoE here.

He is, in effect, sacrificing the well-being of others to promote his own.

Oh yeah, the "Dear Stephen..." webcomic that he wrote where he dumps every single life problem on the only person in the family lump* who had a steady, well-paying job, was an often frequented point of discussion on PoE-Red. Sometimes, he'd swing by to pull a "Greetings fellow kids" moment with us, but as soon as that got brought up he'd scuttle away like a roach when the kitchen light gets turned on.

Another highlight I recall was when doom 3 came out, his subtle-begs were palpable. "SIGH...looks like Doom 3 will require a core duo at least...and a geforce card. SURE WOULD BE NICE IF I HAD THOSE." etc.

Of course as pointed out, this is par for the internet nowadays. Just go on Twitter and demand reparations to your offended progressive group (black, disabled, trans, gay, etc.) and point out your tin cup of choice (gofundme, paypal, etc.) and wait for the toy you wanted.

It fills me with shameful joy to know that he owned happy puppy but squandered the millions (LITERAL MILLIONS!) of dollars he was paid for the domain, too.

e.

*seriously, go look up a "family photo" of JDR, his husband and their...third. BUaghalghaglhaglhgalhag there's not enough eyebleach or booze

No, you see JDR spent it on real estate that was totally going to work out, and anime figs. In the mid 90s.

Doubleposting but this'll bump the thread. Over in >>Arts & Literature in the YABookgate thread somebody linked to Fanlore so I decided to look up "The Conversion Bureau." This matters because I knew JDR had written a buttload of MLP FIM stories and they were controversial within the fandom. So whatever.

tl;dr the stories are misanthropic and full of crapsack world. I've never read any of them but apparently these stories were too sad for the fandom of a children's TV show designed to sell toys. (80s MLP best MLP. I will fight you IRL at this... at Nintendo.)

OK, it links to JDR's Fanfiction.net page. What do we see there?

OK, a little bio. The art seems . . . off, but we're all familiar with JDR's artstyle by this point so of course it's going to be weird. JDR is like 60 something so most women her age would be watching it with their grandchildren :optimistic::optimistic::optimistic::optimistic:

So we go down the page.

The word choice makes sense if you accept that JDR is autistic, and move on. Fine, autistic transsexuals, what else is new? But look at that goddamn word count. JDR could have written several novels and actually made money off of them. I am aware that JDR has issued collections of webcomics, but I honestly don't know how much money JDR would or has ever made off of it? If you've read Unicorn Jelly or Pastel Defender Heliotrope, you would be pissed and want your time back even though you read them for free.

I'm sure it's been brought up here before (it better have been) but Unicorn Jelly is about a cute slime who, over the course of the story, gets vivisected by an immortal autistic goddess to make every slime like it up against a corrupt church, and Pastel Defender Heliotrope is about a sentient sex doll that ... creates new universes, or something? Fuck if I actually know what it's about. The point is, these things were made by an insane troon who's still writing shitty MLP FIM fanfics. It's not like HP Lovecraft and his nigger poem, since we all know HPL was a crazy bastard; it's not like how David Dees (RIP) slowly went from Muppet art to the best insane conspiracy artwork, this is a franchise for children... oh hell like that stopped anyone. Harlan Ellison supposedly got fired from Disney for going on and on about making a pornographic short featuring Minnie, but with Ellison, that's exactly what you'd expect from him.

To conclude: JDR is crazy and the craziness just keeps intensifying. Mods merge my posts since I am a proud doubleposter.

One. And a half. MILLION words!!

Of apocalyptic MLP fanfiction about people being forcefully converted into ponies as the world is consumed by Equestria. :story: Holy fuckballs I never realized it was to THAT level, although considering it JDR I really should have.

Atlas Shrugged was the biggest book I can recall tackling in a single volume, and contained a scene of a speech by John Galt that went on for well over 100 pages alone. Ayn Rand would have had to write a fucking full size trilogy of books as big as AS to match JDR's misanthropic pony story output. Wow.

Is this worse than Sonic’s Ultimate Harem?

JDR also trooned the fuck out and was batshit crazy anyway. I don't know who the person is on the left, but I'd be willing to bet he eats the normal Japanese diet too.

That's some dedication. Six hundred-something strips of unicorn jelly doesn't hold a candle to this. Talk about misplaced priorities. Maybe one day she'll get the One Piece Man treatment if a mangaka with a more conventional, less melty style gets ahold of it. With the increased demand for worldbuilding people like these days, I suppose UJ and PDH would be more well-received if it were published today.

If people weren't so vindictive towards her and her ego was less vehement, I feel as though her Conversion Bureau work, while although a massive slog to read, is often misinterpreted. Also she sometimes mangles her own messages because as eloquent as she is, sometimes she trips up at getting her message across. So after reading this i've come to the conclusion that she isn't as misanthropic as people think she is, but rather she's bungled an elaborate thought experiment and handled it badly enough to the point where she comes off as she is, especially in the way how she reacts to criticism. For some reason, I imagine her speaking with a posh British accent.

JDR is 'merican. I forget exactly from where, but I want to say the West Coast. There's a yuge autobiography on transsexuality.org that tells you just what a hard weird life she had up until having a vagina installed. It's... actually pitiable, and she's probably significantly autistic.

Apparently JDR has a Youtube channel. While checking it, I find

Also one of her "wives" in a ... Well just look at the thumbnail

JDR is old school weeb which means JDR was probably involved with Cartoon/Fantasy back in the day. That fursuit her wife has may very well be older than most Kiwis. Think about that.
