Disaster Canada loses its bid for seat on UN Security Council - Trudeau on suicide watch

Article:

Despite an intense and costly diplomatic push, Canada has lost its bid for a coveted seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Norway and Ireland won the two available temporary seats, with 130 and 128 votes respectively. Canada won 108 votes, falling 20 short of the 128 needed to win a spot at the table.

It's a heavy blow for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne and other high-level officials who had been reaching out to political leaders around the world in a campaign to secure one of the two available rotating seats.

The Security Council holds ten seats for temporary members that join the table for two-year terms. The council has five permanent members — the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China — which have the power to veto resolutions.

Pro-Palestinian groups blame Canada's Middle East policies for its failure to secure a seat. Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) issued a statement saying the defeat "proves that Canada's failure to demonstrate leadership on human rights and international cooperation has isolated it from world opinion."

"In recent months, Trudeau has also been relatively quiet on the threats of Israeli annexation, especially when compared to the vocal and long-standing condemnations from competitors Norway and Ireland," the group said.

Shortly before the results rolled in, Trudeau cited Canada's record on combating climate change, promoting peace and security and supporting developing countries and women's rights.

He said no matter what happens, Canada will continue to fight to reduce global conflict and social inequities.

Exporting Canada's values

"Canada has continued to be a strong voice on the world stage. Because this is what Canada does well and we will continue to do it," he said.

"Yes, a seat on the UN Security Council will be an additional lever and an extra way that Canada can make sure that our voice and our values are being heard at the highest levels. But we will continue to make a difference in the world and defend multilateralism, not just because it's good for the world, but because it's good for Canadians."

The federal government has spent more than $2.3 million on its bid for a seat.

Given its relatively smaller contributions to global peacekeeping and international development assistance, many observers argued Canada was facing a tough challenge from its competitors, Ireland and Norway.

Canada put forward its candidacy in 2016, about a decade after Ireland (2005) and Norway (2007) announced they were running.

Countries need the support of at least two-thirds of the General Assembly to get elected to the council.

Why exactly does anyone care about a ceremonial position elected by a tinpot dictator popularity contest? At least it's an opportunity to laugh at Trudeau I guess.

Although it would've been nice to have a seat on the council I don't like trudeau, morneau, the immigration minister or any other liberal clowns who are in parliament right now. and besides what would canada be pushing if they had that seat anyways? more feminism and gays rights in the middle east? the UN and canadians elites don't work for the people and fuck the Canadian government for spending my tax dollars on this stupid campaign, what a waste of $2.5 million

Yay, Ireland got one! It's about time we got something.
Actually wat. Last I looked an tArm was a less-than-10,000 force used as peacekeeping fodder.

It sounds to me like in order to get it you basically have to bribe a bunch of Arab and African nations.

The fact that Canada didn't seem to kowtow to them quite enough seems to me like it's more deserving of the seat, not less.

FYI there's a run off vote if all the available seats aren't filled after the first, in this case Norway and Ireland both reached the threshold on the first vote so a second wasn't necessary.

Canada tried to get a seat under Harper in 2010 and failed in a run off to get it, but he still got 6 more votes first round than Trudeau. That has to sting.

Canada doesn’t even really exist. It‘s a social experiment played upon the world by an advanced species of moose. They can’t be part of the security council because moose can’t hold rifles, due to their hooves.

But... but... all the media outlets said Trudeau was the new leader of the Western World! Surely they couldn't be wrong... it's not like they'd lie......

The position isn't ceremonial, it actually does matter a lot for making the UN resolutions that go on to underpin interventions and condemnations.

The temporary members on the security council don't get a veto. And if the permanent members are all on board and don't veto something, it's almost certainly going to pass, making the temporary members quite inconsequential. Can you point at a single example of a non-vetoed resolution voted down by the temporary members?

Eh, I can live with it. Trudeau doesn't really have anything he can give to the UN. Real question is when will he start decrying the UN like Trump has, or is he too much of a cuck to even do that?

Denounce a globalist-policy-affirming body? Him? He'd wash their socks with the last glass of clean water in the country before he'd speak ill of them.

Sure thing, this Russian/Chinese proposal failed to pass despite not being vetoed (I think most countries abstained instead, preventing it from getting a majority). Thats not just Xinhua omitting the veto either, you'll note its failure to appear here[/ur], despite the Russia/China veto from the same day appearing.

Ireland was giving UN General Assembly representatives free tickets to Bono concert to secure their votes. Canada was giving them free tickets to Celine Dion concert. No surprise Canada didn't get those votes.

It was a lot more than that if you include all the foreign aid Trudeau threw around to buy votes. Canada has no need to return to the security council, and in all honestly has no reason participating in the UN.

I'm glad this failed. Hopefully the morons in Toronto and Montreal will vote for someone else this time.

You only win if you don't play.

Good. Whatever pisses upon Prime Minister Blackface's reputation and standing in Canada is well deserved. Can't wait to hear Canadians praise all that yummy, goody 'soft power' Canada has compared to the US when all it means is showing off how many corrupt foreign politicians you sucked off only for them to spit on your face right after.

Not a big deal. Norway is about as pro-american as Canada is these days, plus they have a better military. Ireland is pretty neutral, but they invented the car bomb. I'd call it a wash.

Canada doesn't really need to mess with international security. They're going to be facing a possible secession from Alberta in the next decade considering they are the bulk of the country's GDP.
