US U.S. birth rate hits a 35-year low - Bad news for all you Kiwis out there who want to find a mate and procreate

The number of children born in the United States has hit its lowest level in 35 years, according to new federal data, as demographers worry that a baby bust that emerged after the Great Recession is becoming permanent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report Wednesday that 3.7 million children were born in the U.S. last year, down 1 percent from 2018 and the lowest total number of births since 1985.

Birth rates dropped among women of virtually every age and race group, though they rose among women in their early 40s, the CDC found. Birth rates among teenagers dropped substantially, hitting record lows. The rate of teenagers giving birth has dropped by a whopping 60 percent since 2007, and by 73 percent since 1991.

Since the recession, the birth rate has risen year-over-year only once, in 2014. Now, demographers tracking the declining birth rate say the trend is beginning to look like a longer-term pattern.

"The fact that births and fertility continued to decline in 2019 despite the booming economy suggests that this is a permanent shift to a lower fertility regime in the U.S.," said Cheryl Russell, a demographer and contributing editor to the journal American Demographics.

Studies have shown the overall decline in birth rates is being driven by steep drops among Hispanic women and women who do not belong to religious organizations. A 2018 study by the demographer Alicia Munnell at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College showed the rising number of women who attain college degrees and a shrinking wage gap between women and men are contributing factors, too.

The decline in birth rates is widespread among American women of every racial group. There were fewer births in 2019 among white women, black women, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanic women than in 2018, the CDC data shows.

Now, demographers say the birth rate is likely to plunge even more in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic recession accompanying it. Birth rates have historically fallen in times of economic hardship, the data shows.

"Although some have predicted a coronavirus baby boom in 2021, that seems unlikely," Russell said. "It’s more likely that young women will delay becoming pregnant during this time of uncertainty, so we could see a bigger drop in births and fertility rates in 2021."

I honestly don't believe this is reversable in the long run. As people get more prosperous, they have less children. I think it's something evolutionary, the human equivalent of the observed changes in the mouse colony experiments, and every explanation we come up with to explain what's happening is actually our post-facto imaginings.

I would like to be wrong.

Yeah and "the next generation" saw the deal they got by getting married and having kids. Their experiences directly affected my Point of View on having children. I won't date someone with children and I won't date someone who wants children, it is a non-starter for me because there is very little reward for child rearing for men in our culture and an astounding amount of risk.

Then go forth and live as you wish, there's nothing wrong with that.

Just remember this line in forty years when you see the people around you that went ahead and had children and met their spouses, and compare their lives to your own.

I'm not saying you're a bad person for not wanting kids or whatever, but I also remember what my mom told me when I was in highschool: she was part of the first wave feminist generation. She decided it wasn't for her and married my dad and had children of her own. Now she's retired and she's been watching her ideological friends become lonely, dried up, and bitter because their peers had families and they didn't. Meanwhile the ladies that didn't drink the koolaid get to have happy lives.

That's the future I foresee for the guys who opt out. You feel young now and like you can go on forever doing the lone wolf shit. Maybe you can, i dunno. I know I can't. How comforting will that be when you're gray? Men are not immune to loneliness and regret. There's no winning or superiority there.

It's not immoral to not have any children, I'm not saying that. Everyone should be free to live their lives as they see fit so long as they don't hurt themselves or others. But doing something strictly out of fear or out of ideological reasons often leaves people broken and alone.

This is a pretty poor response to him correctly pointing out the risk of being divorce raped. It's entirely possible that men would be more inclined to settle down and have children with one woman if the family court system weren't so heavily biased against men. It's not the primary factor mind you, and people who self-identify as "MGTOW" are still largely gigantic dorks, but even the dorks are capable of having a valid point.

On the bright side, the aging of the American population combined with the impending collapse of the social safety net for the elderly will create a massive supply of cheap/free childcare. Combined with the rapid escalation of housing prices/cost of living in many major US cities, these factors might help finally bring back the extended family (which, over the long run, might lessen some of the difficulties working parents face with child-rearing).
Ultimately, though, it will still require the societal will to change and adapt to the current situation in order to secure a future for subsequent generations. I just don't know if 'muricans are up to the task at the present moment. Too many materialists, hedonists, and manchildren. Ultimately, no matter what the conditions, you can't expect people to raise children if they still haven't grown up themselves.

Cool story bro. Keep telling your self that sob story. But I have no idea where you're assuming that everyone wants to have kids but SoCieTiez is preventing us from doing it. No one is letting fear stop them from having kids, it's never stopped stupid people from breeding.

It's common sense and economy keeping people from having kids. People want to live comfortably. Like many have said, it's expensive for the middle class to have kids. People who use their brains know that isn't comfortable for them, or any possible children.

Fear isn't an inherently bad thing, fear is what tells us something is unsafe.

The Lone Hunter with a bow -SHOULD- be afraid of a Bear, poke the bear with an arrow you are gonna have a real bad day hence why it is more common for us to eat less dangerous animals like deer. (or you know..domesticated animals like Goats and Sheep)

Marriage and Kids in this era is Russian Roulette, you get married and pop out a kid and for the next 10-20 years you are now under the gun of "If the woman says I want a divorce get out." and guess where you end up if that happens?

40, Fat, Alone, and Working yourself to death for 2/3s of your paycheck.

I don't care if its a poor response or a good one. It's my honest response and that's all that matters. Sure, divorce court being heavily weighted against men matters but it's not the end all be all either.

I'm not going to live in fear. If others don't want to participate that's fine. Just make sure its something you can stick to because there's nothing sadder than an old with a long list of "what ifs."

Lots of people have come out in this thread wringing their hands about how SOCIETY is stopping them from having children and how they're scared of divorce court so you're wrong there. And yes of course economics factor into it, I never said it didn't. You nignogs, I swear rofl. It's okay though I still love you.

Big shrug. Sure, I guess. It makes sense that people would be scared of divorce court but you're going to end up 40 and fat anyway even if you're alone.

If that's the way you're going to go just make sure it's worth it.

I'm thinking the Men aren't opting out by choice, but because the Women they are coming across are batshit insane. You find a girl who wants to have kids before shes 40 and isn't diagnosed and on meds. I'll wait.

We need autists to secure the future for KF!

adjusts cap puts cornstalk in my mouth
squints into the sunset

got a famine comin in boys
we're havin a good autist crop this year but the seeds are taint
if we ain't securin a future for the autistic race we don't have no...future
prepare to tighten your belts, future autism markets look bleak

Everyone is just so cold, clinical, and selfish now.

What happened to loving your family? What happened to loving your kids? What happened to enjoying spending time with them? What happened to that being a reason to have them?

I understand not wanting to get divorce raped, but it feels like a lot of today's generation grew up feeling unloved as children and now they can't even fathom the idea that they would ever love their own.

Yeah but you know we saw some random guys from work who are single, fat, and forty and their ex-wives totally divorce raped them and that means it's okay to crawl under the bed and hide there forever deliberately cutting off all human contact. Being raped to sleep by divorce court dick wolves is for schmucks

And obviously all women are insane, on meds and have 20 kids by 40 different dads so you know you know how else is a guy supposed to get hitched

If you're gonna end up 40 and fat anyway why bother with getting old at all?

In fact why do anything at all?

Maybe it's just better to lay down and die...
Because I get to enjoy myself, I get to play my video games, I get to eat my food, I get to buy some ice cream after work and eat the entire thing.

What happened to loving your family? What happened to loving your kids? What happened to enjoying spending time with them? What happened to that being a reason to have them?
Those things are far less valuable if you only get to see those kids and enjoy spending time with them once a week at most.

It is a cynical outlook, but we are in the generation that grew up with this as the face of single fatherhood.

Oh Snide Snarkyness, that is a -great- way to solve the problem, in another generation when "White America" has backslid like "Black America" has after the destruction of the Black Family I am sure your magical Snark wand will give people incentive to change.

I usually try not to essaypost on this site, but there is a lot to be said on this topic.
On some level, I think you're right. I understand why many men are reluctant to have children in the current environment, but not having children is not without its costs either. "Focusing on your career" or "focusing on personal development" and racking up material successes and individual accomplishments is admirable, but most people will not feel fulfilled if those things are their sole sources of meaning in life.
Even an exceptionally accomplished bachelor/bachelorette, someone who has "made it" in terms of material wealth and social status, will probably not be remembered for those accomplishments for any longer than a single generation (if that). Once their peers have all died, their data footprint faded/receded into the background, their possessions drifted off to new owners, there will be nothing left to indicate that they had ever existed.
If you want your reputation and the memory of your personal deeds to stand out amidst the massive historical sea of individuals living and dead, you would have to accomplish something extraordinarily noteworthy. Like become a famous author, start a multibillion dollar company, circumnavigate the globe, commit mass-murder, etc. 99% of people will never do that, and will essentially become dust in the wind not long after they stop breathing.
If you successfully raise children, however, then you are securing a legacy for at least one generation. If they have children, it becomes two, and so on and so forth. It's one of the only surefire ways to ensure that you leave some sort of impact on the world, and that you won't become forgotten/irrelevant. A potential antidote to nihilism older and more powerful than any religion or ideology.
To put it another way, every person alive today is standing at the summit of an uninterrupted chain of struggle/survival that stretches back millenia. One that has survived every major crisis and outlasted every major civilization since the dawn of human history. For many (if not most) people, their bloodline will probably be the most important/impressive thing in which they ever participate (in the grand scheme of things anyway). To cut it off at the present generation will most likely condemn both yourself and all of the individuals who came before you to ultimate irrelevancy, but to carry it forward is to secure your place in history. There are individuals who died ages ago, but have thousands (or more) of descendants alive today. For example, modern European populations can trace their existence back to a handful of Yamnaya men whose names, faces, personalities, and life stories have been swept away by time, but whose existence(s) have been immortalized through procreation. Nothing that these people could have done with their time other than reproduce could have been even close to comparably significant.
I wouldn't begrudge anyone who chooses not to have kids, especially if doing so would not be financially possible or medically/genetically desirable (and especially considering the absolute state of marriage in 2020), but I also know that some of the many people who make that choice would end up much happier if they chose differently. The atomized, materialistic brand of individualism promoted in the West today definitely undervalues things like family, bloodline, parenthood, etc and I worry that in 20-30 years we will see a whole generation of Dax Herreras drinking alone to pass the time in their overpriced vanity homes, remniscing/bragging about past accomplishments and sexual prowess in order to stave off feelings of insignifiance and of having thrown away an opportunity that they will never get back.
