Now, I know that someone in the official Coronavirus thread had already disproven the notion that this could have been spliced with HIV and that the lab who said as much retracted their statements, but I never found out the full explanation for why that can't happen apart from it just being extraordinarily difficult to pull off. There are many viruses that can "survive" freezing temperatures without any issue. I say "survive" because they aren't technically alive to begin with. They will deactivate at higher temperatures (like 165F+) but freezing temperatures typically have little or no effect.

That's what I always heard: Freezing stuff is a great way to prevent contamination/spread, but only heat (very HIGH heat) tends to kill 'em.

Who would trust completely random civilians to hack Chinese government servers and bring back anything worthwhile? If anything at all, they'd just be decoys, to let the real intrusions get swamped in the noise. And it would probably be more useful just to keep quiet so the Chinese IT staff suspect nothing.

It's possible some kind of dictionary/rainbow table/mutated dictionary attack was used, so they could pick out weak passwords that way.
