Eh, I don't think HL2 shit or anything... It's fine, but I didn't grow up playing it, so I don't get the reverence a lot of people seem to have for it.
I'd actually argue against that. Most of it was really just incremental improvements.HL2 did innovate a great number of things
But being first on its own doesn't push innovation, this is because of a combination of two reasons.I'd actually argue against that. Most of it was really just incremental improvements.
Physics was something shooters used before, HL2 was not the first game to use Havok (e.g. Max Payne 2).
It only was the first FPS to use it for physics puzzles, an idea that fortunately never really caught on.
Decent lip syncing also has been done before.
What else? An NPC you escort that defends himself? Even HL1 had that.
But being first on its own doesn't push innovation,
Half Life 2's certainly not the first game with physics, but it executed that concept considerably better, and was much more successful than other games that trying to do the same thing, so it almost certainly influenced the industry much more than other games in regards to physics.
Yes, before HL2, grenade physics were abysmal. Even in Doom 3, you could not do very precise and predictable grenade throws. With HL2 the physics behaved realistically and intuitively enough that grenades did not feel like a crapshoot for the first time. But being first on its own doesn't push innovation, this is because of a combination of two reasons.
1: Because it was not well known so it didn't have much influence on a wide scale. A good example of this would be Pong, it wasn't the first video game, but everything that existed before hand basically only existed as single units in labs so very few people knew about them, Pong was first one that took off commercially so it gets the title because it made the concept of video games known to the wider public.
2: Because its execution of a concept's much worse than whatever later attempt gets credit. The Wright Flyer for example is considered the first airplane because while there was various other attempts going on at the time none had the controllability the Flyer did. You could fly on various powered gliders before the Flyer, you could even slightly control them under ideal conditions. But the Flyer was more stable, thus safer, and much more capable, so it gets the credit.

Play Max Payne 2, it had good grenade physics and came out before HL2.With HL2 the physics behaved realistically and intuitively enough that grenades did not feel like a crapshoot for the first time.
there was a small HL mod that could do the same, it was called cunter stroke or so, cant realy remember has been a long time.Play Max Payne 2, it had good grenade physics and came out before HL2.
You could even let them bounce off a wall and they always sent enemies flying.
Kind of, there were multiple games playing around with physics, Half Life wasn't the first to play around with the concept, and wasn't the first to come to market. In general improved physics in games was a inevitability, it's not like if Half Life 2, or Doom 3, or Max Payne 2, or whatever game you could think of didn't exist that in games wouldn't have improved so drastically, it just meant someone else would've beaten them to the punch as you put it. Half Life 2 just happened to be the baseline for future physics engines through a combination of being commercially and critically the best game out of a bunch of games trying to do the same thing. To bring back the Pong example if that didn't exist it doesn't mean video games wouldn't exist, it just means that someone would've likely made a something like checkers a while after Pong would've taken off.Yeah but what is that, a confession? You might as well just skip the crap and say other people beat this game to the punch but this one sold because it had a name attached.
You can debate the overall quality of HL2, but.
The Gravity gun was the most overrated piece of shit weapon I have ever seen and Not Resident Evil Town was awful to go through because they shoved that gimmicky gun down your throat through half the thing.
I'm kinda mixed on the Xen levels. They aren't good or anything but I replayed the game recently and they weren't terrible, annoying as shit yeah and some of the levels are just confusing to navigate but it's nowhere near the worst thing I ever played. Plus I really like Xen's aesthetics; they're so alien and mysterious and it's just enough to get my head running with what the world's really like since you only see a piece of it. It feels so alien that it made my imagination run wild. You niggas must be seriously forgetting how awful the Xen levels are to be portraying Half Life 1 as the flawless masterpiece to Half Life 2's flawed masterpiece. Like seriously, the worst parts of 2 can't even compare to Interloper.
