Armed robbers hijacked a UPS truck after a robbery in Coral Gables, leading police cars on a harrowing chase up Interstate 75 that ended Thursday night in a dramatic shootout on a busy street in Miramar.

Law-enforcement sources told the Miami Herald that four people were killed: the two robbers, a UPS driver who was taken hostage and a bystander who was inside an idle car at the scene.

An image captured by the Miami Herald showed someone dead behind the wheel of a dark-colored sedan, its windows covered up by authorities.

Miramar police said there “multiple fatalities,” but no police officers were hurt.

The dramatic hostage-taking, chase and shooting was broadcast live by TV news helicopters.

Footage showed a terrifying scene at the peak of rush hour, as the UPS truck slowed to a stop on Miramar Parkway near Flamingo Road in the midst of a cluster of stopped cars shortly after 5:30 p.m. News cameras zoomed in on the passenger side of the truck, and showed the small bursts of light and smoke indicating gunfire.

Several flashes followed as a man’s leg became visible from the door, followed by another man climbing over him, an arm over his head for protection amid the chaos.

Another view from the other side of the van showed cops rushing in. Soon, more than 20 officers had descending on men lying next to the vehicle. Large smears of blood were visible on the roadway as police, and soon paramedics, rushed in to help the wounded.

Because of the carjacking, the FBI will spearhead the investigation. As in all police shooting cases, state prosecutors will also review whether officers broke any laws in using deadly force.

Police say the incident began Thursday at 4:17 p.m. in Coral Gables, when at least two men tried robbing Regent Jeweler’s at 386 Miracle Mile. Officers, alerted by a silent alarm, rushed to the scene within minutes.

A law enforcement source told the Herald that a robber fired into the floor and the bullet ricocheted, hitting a female employee of the store in the forehead.

At least one bullet flew toward Coral Gables City Hall across the street.

Billy Urquia, the Coral Gables city clerk, was in his private office when he heard a gun shot, then a second, and then the sound of a bullet piercing his window.

“The bullet ricocheted off the wall and landed on the floor,” Urquia said Thursday night. “The last one I heard was the one that came in.”

Urquia said he hurried outside his office to find a city security guard already on the phone with police. He estimated the bullet missed him by about two or three feet. A photo taken afterward shows the bullet hole looming over Urquia’s monitor, just below the window blinds. “No glass hit me,” Urquia said.

The UPS truck was carjacked soon afterward, although authorities didn’t say exactly where.

“The individuals abducted the driver of the truck as well as the truck itself,” Coral Gables Chief Edward Hudak said.

Police officers soon found the UPS truck, which made its way up the Florida Turnpike, then Okeechobee Road, then onto Interstate 75 into Broward County. The robbers apparently shot at cops during the chase.

The van exited in Pembroke Pines and weaved its way through the streets — at one point breaking through a traffic arm into the Century Village community — all while followed by a long stream of police cars.

After the shooting, paramedics rushed to treat the injured men. WSVN-Channel 7 reported that at least one person was being airlifted to a trauma center.

Law-enforcement authorities in two counties were scrambling Thursday night to figure out what happened. So was UPS, which is in the middle of the busy holiday gift-delivery season.

“We are trying to learn about the status of our personnel and are concerned about their safety,” a UPS spokesman said in a statement. “We appreciate law enforcement’s service and will cooperate with them to bring the individuals to justice who put our people in harm’s way.”

MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – A senior law enforcement source has shared startling statistics about the shootout between several law enforcement agencies and two armed robbers who led them on a two-county chase Thursday afternoon.

A total of 19 officers, from five different agencies, fired into the carjacked UPS truck, a senior law enforcement source told CBS4 News.

The majority were from Miami Dade PD, but also included officers from Pembroke Pines, Florida Highway Patrol and Miramar.

The number of shots fired by the officers is not currently known, but CBS4’s Jim DeFede’s source said it could exceed 200 rounds.

In addition to the UPS driver, who was on his knees, the innocent bystander was shot while sitting in a car waiting at the stop light in the intersection.

The driver, bystander and both suspects died as a result of the shootout in Miramar that started as an armed robbery in Coral Gables.

Did they shoot the vehicle knowing the UPS driver and hostage was in there? Fuck.

(They being the police)

Yes. Yes they did. In a traffic jam with dozens of innocent bystanders.

MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – UPS is mourning the loss of a driver killed Thursday after being taken hostage by two armed robbers who got into a shootout with police in Miramar.

Friends of Frank Ordonez confirmed the news of his death to CBS4 News.

A coworker said he had just started with the company.

According to the coworker, Thursday marked Ordonez’s first day alone on the job after having completed his training.

The coworker said Ordonez was so excited to get going with his work.

While UPS did not mention Ordonez by name, they released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to learn a UPS service provider was a victim of this senseless act of violence. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of our employee and the other innocent victims involved in this incident. We appreciate law enforcement’s service and will cooperate with the authorities as they continue the investigation.”

According to Ordonez’s Facebook page, he leaves behind a 1-year-old daughter.

Local 804, a union that represents UPS workers in New York, have created a GoFundMe to help Ordonez’s family with funeral costs.

“A fellow UPS driver was the unfortunate victim of a hijacking, resulting in a tragic death. Let’s help Frank Ordoñez’s family in this tragic time and show some support from Local 804 New York,” wrote Raymond Mathers, the organizer of the page.

Who's got time for negotiations when it's rush hour? We can't be tying up this road for six hours to have a goddamn standoff.... FIRE!

wasn't this story posted earlier here cause I spent a while looking for it.

anyways, I don't know if the robbers shot first but its crazy cops unloaded into the UPS truck in traffic with civilians all over the place.

Fuck.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, I'm thinking the Cops believed this was in some way a terrorist incident. Or something along the lines of that classic LA Bloodbath, with the heavily armed and armored bank robbers with automatic weapons. The death of the UPS driver and bystander is horrifying. But I think we need more info.

God damn what a shit show. Fuck the two suspects, and may the two innocent people rest in peace.

Did the cops or the criminals kill the bystander? The UPS driver is likely due to the cops, but these guys decided to engage in a gunfight with police at a traffic filled intersection, so I wouldn't be surprised if they missed a cop car and hit another vehicle.

I'd like to assume that the police did not know the driver was still in the truck but they should have assumed otherwise (that the driver was hostage) and let the morons waste all their ammo. Yes it would have been dangerous but if no one knows where the driver is, it should be assumed they're still there in the vehicle.
Plus they can't have brought tons of ammo unless they were wearing cargo pants. Instead of staying in cover and evacuating civilians with cover fire, they poured fire into the truck and killed them, the hostage, and some random driver.
This is all in hindsight but still, what a shitshow.

Good thing the police prevented the pursuit of the criminals from lasting perhaps another hour or so as a police helicopter followed them and they could be apprehended without any needless loss of life! I mean, why let them relocate to a less crowded area in a GPS-tracked vehicle, when they can have a shoot out in the middle of a busy street?!?

Meanwhile, the Extremely Online copsuckers responses are all in the vein of

That entire department sure as shit isn't getting any Christmas bonus next year. Open and shut wrongful death suit for the families of the driver and bystander.

Imagine waiting at a stop light and you get fucking capped because some dumb fuck cops are shooting at some even dumber fuck hijackers. This doesn't even get to how awful the hostage being killed (probably by the cops, but the details aren't clear from the article) on top of that. 200 rounds in busy traffic sounds pretty reckless. What a god damn shit show.

200 rounds is an awful lot. The average infantryman only carries 300 and the expectation of that is to engage in actual armed combat with hostile forces not not cap a hostage, civilian, and a hijacker while accomplishing nothing.

The LAPD managed to end that with the only casualties being the 2 robbers, despite the fact the two were spraying the entire neighborhood with a legit machine gun..... No amount of additional info is going to convince me this wasn't horribly horribly botched. Two guys in a van with handguns should NOT result in hundreds of rounds of ammo being expended while the van is in the middle of four lanes of congested civilian traffic.

They let the adrenaline get the better of them, and a hostage and completely innocent motorist got shot for it..... it's shameful .

Save the Russian approach to dealing with hostages for Russia....

200 rounds is nothing for how many cops were there. Another article said more than 20 cops opened up. At 20 cops, that's only 10 rounds per... Pretty much each cop mag dumped and stopped. That's how cops are, as soon as one opens fire, they all do.

This is probably the most American thing I have seen in awhile.

Cops mag dumping over 200 rounds into a single vehicle while a dozen civilian cars are around, and one civilian recording the incident on his smartphone while speaking in Spanish.

Low IQ individuals not only robbed a store in the middle of town across from a city hall, they also carjacked a GPS tracked vehicle that couldn't outrun any police interceptor in a million years, while being in the middle of rush hour with impassable traffic. This isn't PAYDAY 2
