Robbery suspects, hostage and bystander killed after hijacking, dramatic police chase

Armed robbers hijacked a UPS truck after a robbery in Coral Gables, leading police cars on a harrowing chase up Interstate 75 that ended Thursday night in a dramatic shootout on a busy street in Miramar.

Law-enforcement sources told the Miami Herald that four people were killed: the two robbers, a UPS driver who was taken hostage and a bystander who was inside an idle car at the scene.

An image captured by the Miami Herald showed someone dead behind the wheel of a dark-colored sedan, its windows covered up by authorities.

Miramar police said there “multiple fatalities,” but no police officers were hurt.

The dramatic hostage-taking, chase and shooting was broadcast live by TV news helicopters.

Footage showed a terrifying scene at the peak of rush hour, as the UPS truck slowed to a stop on Miramar Parkway near Flamingo Road in the midst of a cluster of stopped cars shortly after 5:30 p.m. News cameras zoomed in on the passenger side of the truck, and showed the small bursts of light and smoke indicating gunfire.

Several flashes followed as a man’s leg became visible from the door, followed by another man climbing over him, an arm over his head for protection amid the chaos.

Another view from the other side of the van showed cops rushing in. Soon, more than 20 officers had descending on men lying next to the vehicle. Large smears of blood were visible on the roadway as police, and soon paramedics, rushed in to help the wounded.

Because of the carjacking, the FBI will spearhead the investigation. As in all police shooting cases, state prosecutors will also review whether officers broke any laws in using deadly force.

Police say the incident began Thursday at 4:17 p.m. in Coral Gables, when at least two men tried robbing Regent Jeweler’s at 386 Miracle Mile. Officers, alerted by a silent alarm, rushed to the scene within minutes.

A law enforcement source told the Herald that a robber fired into the floor and the bullet ricocheted, hitting a female employee of the store in the forehead.

At least one bullet flew toward Coral Gables City Hall across the street.

Billy Urquia, the Coral Gables city clerk, was in his private office when he heard a gun shot, then a second, and then the sound of a bullet piercing his window.

“The bullet ricocheted off the wall and landed on the floor,” Urquia said Thursday night. “The last one I heard was the one that came in.”

Urquia said he hurried outside his office to find a city security guard already on the phone with police. He estimated the bullet missed him by about two or three feet. A photo taken afterward shows the bullet hole looming over Urquia’s monitor, just below the window blinds. “No glass hit me,” Urquia said.

The UPS truck was carjacked soon afterward, although authorities didn’t say exactly where.

“The individuals abducted the driver of the truck as well as the truck itself,” Coral Gables Chief Edward Hudak said.

Police officers soon found the UPS truck, which made its way up the Florida Turnpike, then Okeechobee Road, then onto Interstate 75 into Broward County. The robbers apparently shot at cops during the chase.

The van exited in Pembroke Pines and weaved its way through the streets — at one point breaking through a traffic arm into the Century Village community — all while followed by a long stream of police cars.

After the shooting, paramedics rushed to treat the injured men. WSVN-Channel 7 reported that at least one person was being airlifted to a trauma center.

Law-enforcement authorities in two counties were scrambling Thursday night to figure out what happened. So was UPS, which is in the middle of the busy holiday gift-delivery season.

“We are trying to learn about the status of our personnel and are concerned about their safety,” a UPS spokesman said in a statement. “We appreciate law enforcement’s service and will cooperate with them to bring the individuals to justice who put our people in harm’s way.”

Jesus Christ this could've been done way better. I understand needing to cover yourself from gun fire but they could've at least try to evacuate the civilians in the vehicle first before they went rambo. Does anyone know if the police were aware if the robbers had a hostage? Also the UPS truck was in traffic and had no were else to go. It's most likely that the robbers shot at the cops first but they could've practice some sort of discipline first or at the very least be wary of there surroundings.

Imagine being this much of a fucking bootlicker.

You think its OK for people to be collateral fucking damage for a fucking JEWEL HEIST?

Its not like we're talking about a terrorist actively gunning people down, its some dumbass robber with a hostage, the response was wildly out of proportion and I guarantee you, I FUCKING GUARANTEE YOU, that the cops did not need to go guns blazing and light the robber, some rando, and the hostage up like that, there's absolutely no fucking excuse.

Cops have so much fucking gear and they had a billion options better than "ITS COMIN RIGHT FOR ME BLAMBLAMBLAM'

How fucking laughable. A jewel heist. You're saying its ok that a cop could shoot you because you're a hostage and there's a jewel heist going on.

God I fucking despise righties lust for Cop Boot. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU.

I am saying the responsibility for what happened rests with the people who started this mess, not the people who ended it. Hindsight is always 20/20. Could things have been done better? Maybe? If the police helicopter had hellfire missiles installed on it they could have blown the suspects to Kingdom come immediately and spared everyone the trouble. Do we want police helicopters with hellfire missiles?

If you watch the video there is three parts to the situation.

Part 1: suspects get stuck in traffic and are surrounded by cops

Part 2: suspects open fire on cops.

Part 3: Cops return fire.

Everyone in this thread are acting like the police somehow set up this scenario and then went in guns blazing like in GTA. The chase lasted for quite a length of time. Had the cops wanted to end this in a full of blaze of glory they had ample opportunity to do it before the moment it actually happened.

Idk man, the suspects had no were else to go. Opening fire like just seemed reckless. Even If I was a cop in that particular situation I honestly can't see myself firing first then saving civilians later. Especially if I'm using their vehicles with them still inside it.

The cops saw brown, so they just followed instinct and went gun-ho regardless of the circumstances. Plus it's Florida, Blue Lives Matter.

Seriously, I didn't imagine those civilians or the UPS driver were expecting to be collateral in between a shootout. F to the UPS driver. Imagine the "heroes" doing more damage than the villains.

Sure they had somewhere to go. To jail. Which is where the vast majority of situations like this end up. These guys decided to suicide by cop and take as many people as they could down with them. Its shit but I dont see how it's the cops fault. The suspects opened fire first.

So I decided to go to the r/ProtectandServe subreddit to see what they thought.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtectAndServe/comments/e76o40/hijacked_ups_truck_led_florida_police_on_a/

Turns out, not only do a ton of cops agree that the situation was handled poorly all around, but there was even a similar situation with a UPS truck and hostage and everything back in February.

https://www.liveleak.com/view?t=sq9Ec_1571334613

Unlike in the Florida situation, they pursued the truck until it stopped on its own, then waited at a distance until one suspect surrendered and the driver was released, and then they negotiated some more until trying to box the truck in with vehicles, causing the one suspect to flee with his shotgun, where he was shot once and killed.

As someone who has driven many trucks just trying to make a living in my life this story is horrifying and hits close to home. Youre just delivering shit, running your route, and some crazy motherfucker gets you killed. Just like that, dude clocked in and never clocked out, and it wasnt his fault or fuck up and there also wasnt shit he could do about it. Damn.

Sounds like the cops were getting shot at which made them open up on the truck. One exceptional individual I know IRL is already jumping to conclusions and calling the cops incompetent. Told me "all it would have taken was one phone call to ups with the truck number to figure out there was a hostage". Seems kinda optimistic to me.

When I asked how the cops exactly were supposed to call up UPS while being shot at, they replied "I'm sure plenty of them were on the radio with dispatch, they should have been asking". I didn't really even know how to respond to that so I just said ok I guess.

Not victim blaming at all, I've basically been in the guys shoes working similar jobs driving trucks around. I just think it's a bit too early to point the finger at the cops or really anyone except the evil greedy fucker who jacked the truck in the first place.

I'll openly admit that I've been pretty spergy and dumb in this thread with me defending the cops in this scenario. There definitely was a better way to handle this situation, and the force they used was way too excessive, even if the two robbers themselves were greedy deranged scumbags.

The entire situation is fucked, really. It's depressing that more people care about getting clout on social media for calling UPS dumb for their public message and doing their one charitable act of the year by donating to the family of the guy than analyzing the actual situation and speculating what could've been done to prevent this. Everyone will more then likely forgot about this shit by next week.

I rescind my own prior autism. I think end of day it was a tragedy but also it was inevitable the situation was ending in violence.

Hopefully something good comes out of it.

1. ups trucks have gps and tracking equipment on them. why didn't the cops just track the vehicle.

I'm going to assume it's somewhat difficult to run up to UPS and them to track a specific truck, a truck you may or not even be able to effectively ID, during the middle of a hostage crisis. But more to the point:

why didn't the cops just track the vehicle.

They did track the truck, moron. Why do you think it got surrounded by cops the minute it got stuck, did you think the robbers still have too high a star rating and the cops just spawned in to continue the chase?

what would posses an individual to think, at any point, that starting a fucking gunfight in the middle of rush hour traffic would be a good fucking idea? all the police needed to fucking do was follow the fucking truck in a helicopter and intercept the robber either when he's in a safer area, or the fucking truck runs out of gas. they could've laid down spike strips, they had SO MANY OPTIONS.

Because, obviously, this is where the truck got stuck. They didn't force it to stop here, traffic did, after that the only choices are to sit around and let the host aging taking assholes that already shot someone sit around and plan thier next move, or confront them first and deny them that planning. Did it work out? No, obviously not. Was it a better move than hoping violent robbers with poor impulse control and decisions making skills wouldn't shoot thier hostage? Yes, absolutely.

these pigs murdered that UPS driver and that bystander due to their idiocy and lack of an ability to think ahead.

I never knew so many people had the psychic powers to know exactly who killed someone else based only on internet hearsay and ultra blurry helicopter footage. At least wait for the forensics report before you start with your moralfaggorty, that way said report can't bite you in the ass if it turns out the cops didn't kill him. I sincerely hope they didn't, I'd love to be able beat assholes like you over the head with that.

lol calm down I'm sorry I hurt your feels by rightfully criticizing the police who definitely fucked up and ended up getting two innocent people killed.

but I mean keep going off. I understand how important it is to fellate the pigs over the internet.

No not at all. The point of a hostage is to not get killed so they keep the police off your back. If you kill the hostage that's game over, and you only have the one. The police absolutely should have hung back, surrounded the vehicle from some distance, evacuated bystanders, and begin hostage negotiations. Maybe the criminals shoot him, but that's unlikely for reasons already given, and even if they do that looks way better than you shooting him. And it CERTAINLY looks better than you shooting both him AND another innocent person who just had happened to be there.

First of all it's not like the cops decided this would be the spot for the final showdown.
Yes they did, and that's the problem in addition to magdumping blindly into a vehicle with plenty of civilians behind it.

Cops make understandable mistakes and/or are forced into situations where innocents get hurt or people who aren't get hurt more than they may deserve all the time. That's fine and people with any modicum of intelligence understand that that's life. Gunfights won't always go perfectly and criminals don't care about much other than themselves. The job clearly requires snap judgments which for obvious reasons won't always be the right one. That's understandable, and it sucks people freak out at the cops about them. However, this isn't one of those times.

You would think they wouldn't trap a potentially dangerous suspect in a place where they have dozens of human bodyshields

Oops! My Mistake, the cops needed those bodyshields, FOR THEIR OWN PROTECTION. Far better some civilian trapped there BY THE COPS is shot than a cop, right?

So in the future if I am driving my car and I see cops with their guns out, I’m simply slamming on the gas pedal and getting out of there. Even if I crash into other cars. Even if I run over a cop. It’s better to drive fast and escape than allow yourself to be shot to death on accident by a cop. Those cops don’t care. They aren’t even getting in trouble for killing the innocent people.

Its really the only rational response, cops might shoot you anyways.

No one should ever want to be around any cops ever, you never know when they'll just decide to murder you. Isn't it great?

Well see if they hadn't opened fire might then and there the bad guys might have killed the hostage or maybe even hurt bystanders!
