39 people found dead in lorry container - Essex, UK

The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.

The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said the vehicle travelled from Bulgaria and entered the UK via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.

Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said. There were no survivors.

Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said identifying the victims "remains our number one priority".

She appealed for anyone with information about the route the lorry may have taken, or anyone who had seen the vehicle or knew about its journey, to get in touch.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Prime Minister's Questions it was an "unimaginable tragedy and truly heartbreaking".

He said: "I know that the thoughts and prayers of all members will be with those who lost their lives and their loved ones. I'm receiving regular updates. The Home Office will work closely with Essex Police as we establish exactly what has happened."

Irish Premier Leo Varadkar told the Dail that the deaths were a "human tragedy", adding that investigations would be undertaken to establish if the lorry had passed through Ireland.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said she was "shocked and saddened by this utterly tragic incident", while Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price said it was "sickening news".

"People trafficking is a vile and dangerous business," Ms Doyle-Price tweeted, adding that she hoped Essex Police could "bring these murderers to justice".

Seamus Leheny, Northern Ireland policy manager for the Freight Transport Association, said if the lorry had come from Bulgaria, getting into Britain via Holyhead was an "unorthodox route".

He said: "People have been saying that security and checks have been increased at places like Dover and Calais, so it might be seen as an easier way to get in by going from Cherbourg or Roscoff, over to Rosslare, then up the road to Dublin.

"It's a long way around and it'll add an extra day to the journey."

The National Crime Agency said it had sent officers to assist the investigation and identify any "organised crime groups who may have played a part". Ch Supt Andrew Mariner, from Essex Police, said he expected identifying the victims would be a "lengthy process".

It's quite chaotic here and the number of bystanders and reporters is continuing to grow.

The industrial estate is huge and has lots of multi-national companies. The nearest residential property must be about half a mile away.

Glen Freeland, from GSF Car Parts, which is close to where the bodies were found, said staff could not access their premises on Eastern Avenue.

"The manager went to get into work this morning and it was cordoned off and we've been moved to a different area," Mr Freeland said.

The article I caught about this literally ended with a quote saying something like “this wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t better immigration policy”. I shit you not.

On a related note, does anyone have a source on how they actually died?

Richard Burnett, chief executive of the Road Haulage Association, said the container appeared to be a refrigerated unit, where temperatures could be as low as -25C.

Seems it was from freezing to death.

Mo Robinson has a lot of explaining to do. If I were him, I would just tell the judge that I was driving a death truck and I have no idea what's going on because holy shit, I'm a lunatic!

That's a hell of a lot better than accidentally killing 39 immigrants and then getting tossed into a prison full of immigrants.
Police: "What were you doing last night?"
Mo: "Just chillin' officer"

I'll be interested to find out how this unfolded, like whether he knew the contents of the container, the death timeline, if he became suspicious and peeked inside to find the, "Oh fuck me this isn't happening" of a lifetime or maybe had malicious intent and let the cattle asphyxiate, that kind of thing. This is a morbid mess.

Didn't this same thing happen before in the UK but in a different city?

Yup.
In 2000 58 dead bodies were found in a lorry at Dover, after travelling from Belgium. The driver was sentenced to 14 years in jail for his part in a people smuggling operation.
They were immigrants and likely died of asphyxiation after being trapped in the container for more than 18 hours.

Seems it was from freezing to death.

From that article: "The Scania truck was registered in Varna (on the east coast) under the name of a company owned by an Irish citizen," he said.

Wouldn't an Irish Citizen be from The Republic of Ireland?
Seems North and South of Ireland relations are great when it comes to people smuggling.

Nothing necessarily suspicious, I can't pick the model but it looks older, the original owner might have sidelined it if it was getting expensive to run or broke something significant and got used to pick for parts. Then someone buys it and registers to use for one last run.

These older trucks may get more valuable, especially for uses like this- the latest versions of the digital tachiographs mandated for new trucks have to have integrated GPS tracking and other trucking-unfriendly features.

A lot of drivers have no idea they've picked up stowaways, anyways. Trucks will be waiting in long lines for the ferries, and migrants will rush out of the bushes, cut locks, jump in a trailer, and then someone staying behind replaces the lock/tag. At some ports, the lines are long enough that the trucks end up idling for long times outside of the port facility perimeter.

Then again, smugglers likely just neglected to tell the "migrants" to dress warm. Transit smugglers are always paid up-front.
39 stowaways, though? That's pretty substantial.

if Roma were involved, it would've only have been to take the money & shove em into the trailer.
Indeed. Pikeys could just get on a ferry to come in.

Anybody willingly hoping onto a truck to be smuggled into Londonistan of all places deserves death.

However these may have been forceably trafficked victims. Time will tell, or not.

this, did they just look into it because the driver was suspicious? wouldn't that be racist? couldn't have been the smell.

I assume that means refrigerated trailer and not weed bus. It was refrigerated but the question is if the driver was stupid enough to turn it on and turn them into popsicles. Dead people can't be forced to work off their debt and some people are probably very angry at him for costing them money and bringing massive police attention to their business.

Reefers are normally always on when loaded. When you pull into the yard and hook your reefer the reefer cooling unit is already on and you don't check what's inside, that's not the drivers business. Even more so if you do drop and hooks which means you drop one trailer and hook up the next, in and out as fast as possible.
Refrigerated trailers can't be adjusted from outside, or the cab. Controls are almost always located inside, right next to the door.

You can adjust the temperature from the outside, right under the cooling unit at the front is a controller for temperature adjustment. Some reefer units also have a remote control to check the temp and lower or raise it when needed without even leaving the drivers cab.
