39 people found dead in lorry container - Essex, UK

The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.

The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said the vehicle travelled from Bulgaria and entered the UK via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.

Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said. There were no survivors.

Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said identifying the victims "remains our number one priority".

She appealed for anyone with information about the route the lorry may have taken, or anyone who had seen the vehicle or knew about its journey, to get in touch.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Prime Minister's Questions it was an "unimaginable tragedy and truly heartbreaking".

He said: "I know that the thoughts and prayers of all members will be with those who lost their lives and their loved ones. I'm receiving regular updates. The Home Office will work closely with Essex Police as we establish exactly what has happened."

Irish Premier Leo Varadkar told the Dail that the deaths were a "human tragedy", adding that investigations would be undertaken to establish if the lorry had passed through Ireland.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said she was "shocked and saddened by this utterly tragic incident", while Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price said it was "sickening news".

"People trafficking is a vile and dangerous business," Ms Doyle-Price tweeted, adding that she hoped Essex Police could "bring these murderers to justice".

Seamus Leheny, Northern Ireland policy manager for the Freight Transport Association, said if the lorry had come from Bulgaria, getting into Britain via Holyhead was an "unorthodox route".

He said: "People have been saying that security and checks have been increased at places like Dover and Calais, so it might be seen as an easier way to get in by going from Cherbourg or Roscoff, over to Rosslare, then up the road to Dublin.

"It's a long way around and it'll add an extra day to the journey."

The National Crime Agency said it had sent officers to assist the investigation and identify any "organised crime groups who may have played a part". Ch Supt Andrew Mariner, from Essex Police, said he expected identifying the victims would be a "lengthy process".

It's quite chaotic here and the number of bystanders and reporters is continuing to grow.

The industrial estate is huge and has lots of multi-national companies. The nearest residential property must be about half a mile away.

Glen Freeland, from GSF Car Parts, which is close to where the bodies were found, said staff could not access their premises on Eastern Avenue.

"The manager went to get into work this morning and it was cordoned off and we've been moved to a different area," Mr Freeland said.

I assume that means refrigerated trailer and not weed bus. It was refrigerated but the question is if the driver was stupid enough to turn it on and turn them into popsicles.

That would've been a fun story.

Refrigerated trailers can't be adjusted from outside, or the cab. Controls are almost always located inside, right next to the door.

A lot of drivers have no idea they've picked up stowaways, anyways. Trucks will be waiting in long lines for the ferries, and migrants will rush out of the bushes, cut locks, jump in a trailer, and then someone staying behind replaces the lock/tag. At some ports, the lines are long enough that the trucks end up idling for long times outside of the port facility perimeter.

Then again, smugglers likely just neglected to tell the "migrants" to dress warm. Transit smugglers are always paid up-front.

Holy shit, that’s genuinely terrifying. I wonder what happened. I’m assuming it’s human trafficking gone wrong.

There should be a poll for the thread on the reason.
Options ranging from human trafficing fuck up; an elaborate serial killing spree; a bizzare new method of Islamic Terrosim; an Incel lonewolf attack; the Neo-IRA rising up; and etc.

So what are we looking at here the are Slavs now in the business of cartel style warnings?

Probably suffocated inside the cab.

The killer obviously hates white niggers.

But remember! Immigration doesn't need to be regulated! Any thoughts like that make you racist.

I'm putting my bets on them being gypsies and then suddenly they stop reporting on the story because gypsies don't help their narrative
Gypsies could help their narrative very well because they commit a lot of crimes in UK and many of them are white. "See? And people don't complain about muhwypipol also murdering!". I guess the Woke Brits aren't very sharp because they've wilingly gave up all sharpness to the authorities.

Different breed gypsy. And even though it's the same difference, if Roma were involved, it would've only have been to take the money & shove em into the trailer.

Haji is seriously crowding out the gypsies, and I wouldn't put it past em to take out the competition that way (while turning a profit!).

Imagine the smell.

Corpsicles don't stink; those people were probably dead not more than a few hours after the doors shut.

I imagine the shock be the same though, cracking open the trailer and finding a single frozen mass of bodies. And getting 'em apart would be a real chore, without a prybar at least.

Mo Robinson has a lot of explaining to do. If I were him, I would just tell the judge that I was driving a death truck and I have no idea what's going on because holy shit, I'm a lunatic!

That's a hell of a lot better than accidentally killing 39 immigrants and then getting tossed into a prison full of immigrants.

Is this an improvement over 39 people dying by being struck by a lorry, or more disconcerting because now the trucks are becoming smarter at hiding it?

Surprised the BBC hasn’t made this about Brexit yet. I guess it’s still early days for this story, they’ll think of something.
The article I caught about this literally ended with a quote saying something like “this wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t better immigration policy”. I shit you not.

On a related note, does anyone have a source on how they actually died?
