Due to labor shortages in the Japanese convenience store chain “LAWSON”, the chain began testing no-employee self check out convenience store layouts.

On the 23rd of August, a store in Yokohama began experimenting with the new model from 12am to 5am. Customers were required to take a facial photo prior to entering the store as a means of guest booking customers. Items such as cigarettes, alcohol, or anything requiring employees were not available during these hours.

One tester reported on how confusing it was initially for the usage of the new layout and no-employee model.

To compensate for the security, 29 separate cameras were installed in every isle and part of the store and one security personnel behind a room in the store.

So is pretty gay or is this efficient?

Tbh I bet it's a bit less vacant than what they make it out to be. I could see this being a good time for people to stock stuff at 12am to 5am. So you probably have someone stocking and they'll point you to the self checkout when you're done if you go up to them.

Off topic, but Lawson's was originally a chain of convenience stores in Northern Ohio. They entered the Japanese market in the 70's and absolutely dominated, while the US side of the company foundered and ended up being absorbed by Dairy Mart in 1985. They made the best french onion dip, and you can still find it in some Circle K stores. Ask any boomer aged Clevelander about Lawson's and they'll get all nostalgic about it.

I can see this working in Japan. They are a very law abiding and cultured race. There is stuff like this here with 3 automated self serve cashier machines and 1 employee to verify for adult only alcohol purchases and helping adventurous grannies who never saw a computer out.

So stealing is not much an issue since in a mostly white country where most whites consider petty theft to be undignified and dishonourable for the aryan race.

Shit, can you just imagine how this would go if you plopped down a store like this in Detroit or one of the banlieus of Paris?!


Personally I prefer stores with a human behind the register.

Also: In any big city, there are tens of thousands of mentally ill people and weirdos who do most of their shopping in convenience stores at night because of their social phobias, weirdness and mental issues. That one guy behind the register? That might be the only live interaction with a human being they have most weeks. It’s a shame if they’d lose that.
