Due to labor shortages in the Japanese convenience store chain “LAWSON”, the chain began testing no-employee self check out convenience store layouts.

On the 23rd of August, a store in Yokohama began experimenting with the new model from 12am to 5am. Customers were required to take a facial photo prior to entering the store as a means of guest booking customers. Items such as cigarettes, alcohol, or anything requiring employees were not available during these hours.

One tester reported on how confusing it was initially for the usage of the new layout and no-employee model.

To compensate for the security, 29 separate cameras were installed in every isle and part of the store and one security personnel behind a room in the store.

I’ve seen small self-service kiosks in China that scan your phone when you enter, automatically log the products you take and deducts it from your Weixing (?? Whatever their commerce app is called) account when you exit. I haven’t used it so I don’t know the specifics of how it works.

We’re definitely at the level where convenient self-service stores that don’t compromise security or convenience are possible. this doesn’t sound like one of them, though

Doesn't China have a bunch of those already? I don't know how well they work but in the end a store's a store, I just want to buy my stuff and go. We've already got self-checkout in most places, cashiers are getting replaced and I really don't see a problem.

Now if we could have useful employees in fucking hardware stores when all the cashiers are gone, that'd be nice.

Japanese convenience stores can be pretty bad ass. While there's some versions of them in the US there'll be places where you can go and get hot bbq being made by some guy with a tiny grill, places that sell tons of different types of ramen and funky, fucked up snacks. Japans snack game is on point.
