Elon Musk's NeuraLink reveals 'N1', first generation brain interface system on a chip

TLDR:

-1000x higher neural reading resolution than existing technologies
-Each chip is tiny, comes with 1024 attached micro-electrodes that can read individual neurons and write to clusters of neurons. Each chip handles all signals processing and features wireless connection (Bluetooth).
-Electrode sensors are implanted beside/between neurons, so each electrode can read multiple neurons, but writing (inciting action potentials) to neurons is less precise.
-Electrodes are super thin, only a robot can implant them through tiny hole in skull. It weaves them safely past blood vessels and takes an hour to implant one chip. Implantation would resemble laser eye surgery.
-Consumer setup includes Array of 4 chips, which are then hooked up to a small battery compartment behind ear, which has a usb-c port for firmware updates.
-Implanted Array comes with a phone app.
-First use cases utilizing cluster of 4 chips include phone control, mouse and keyboard control.

Applications are limited by implantation region. For example implanting all micro-electrodes into the motor cortex leads to emulating and stimulating movement. Technology scales in both directions (improvements in resolution/smaller size of electrodes, computational capacity of the chips, higher wireless bandwidths) leading to improvements all around. i.e Existing implants could be upgraded via software or an external hardware add on.

It's finally fucking happening you guys.

I know Black Mirror just exists to tell stories to make you think without going too deep on how any of their ideas could ever work but I'm still a little weirded out thinking about the episodes where people's brains are manipulated so "undesirable" images and ideas get mosaic'd out of sight, out of mind.

Oh, almost let my horror at the idea of brain implants blind me to the more likely scenario: This is total fucking bullshit and nothing close to what is described exists.

Nonsense. The latest fucking gpu's and cpu's from amd already use components smaller than the action potential related components of the human nervous system. The tech is there and has been for years.

But is this like video game companies that ban you from the game you paid for if they don't like something you said or did? Could they blue screen of death your motor skills if you didn't praise liberalism or oburma or something?
The game Shadowrun is fun in concept, but not in reality.
Just imagine the nerve damage and the company acting like EA / Bioware, "It's not a bug, it's a feature that you're drooling into your Spaghetti-Os with your eyes rolling into the back of your head!"
If Oburma-care could force people to buy health insurance, what do you think the left will demand in a brain implant GPS and such? Behavior enforcers? While privilege reducers? Oh this can't be good. BRB, changing my name to Dale Wraith Gribble.

It's for everyone's safety that we all pay under the mark of the beast and you can have your free will deactivated at any time.

Also: To avoid black mirror scenario I have my own "secret plan"
If I suspect I'm in the simulation I'll stop whatever I'm doing, stand up and start shouting nigger repeatedly so they have to turn me off

You can't fight guns with spears and swords. The technology is out of the bag, what people choose to do with it is up to them. If you hope to survive in such a society, you'd better adopt the technology and jailbreak it. Write your own custom code so you don't become one of the drones. Without the tech the drones will squash you and use force to nerve staple your ass. With the tech you at least stand a chance of staying at parity or a few steps ahead and preserving yourself.

only one man can save us now
>mfw the cia fries my brain with lsd and makes me a prophet
>Implanted Array comes with a phone app.

Now THAT's definitely safe.
It looks like the basic tech for rats is in place, but like a lot of cutting edge shit like this I was wondering how much was smoke and mirrors. I found out when I got to the "And we have an app for that!" part. Well, admittedly seeing Musk's name raised some alarm bells.

We already have that, one version of it is called "autism."

Seizures, natures way of saying "LOL, I L33T H4><oR!"

Anything Musk promotes is suspect because he's this odd and unbalanced fusion of snake oil salesman and actual scientist. He's 10% right and 90% investment-seeking sped.

Remember, he was the guy who built a rescue sub that, couldn't go around the corner it had to to reach it's destination? He's not a whackjob trying to sell you a free energy machine he never actually SHOWS you (Because then Big Oil would steal it) but he IS the kind of guy who shoots a BB through 1000 yards of vacuum sealed drinking straws and declares "SEE? The hyperloop WORKS! Invest now and don't get left behind!"

For every ounce of steak he's selling 50 tons of sizzling noise, and the dummies in the public eat it up every time......

The Warrior's bland acronym, NL, obscures the true horror of this monstrosity. Its inventors promise a new era of genius, but meanwhile unscrupulous power brokers use its forcible installation to violate the sanctity of unwilling human minds. They are creating their own private army of demons.

That's... nice. Yeah, they can make small things. Now lets see it actually successfully interface with the brain in a meaningful way.

I can connect wires to a person's brain and make them do stuff. Probably not useful stuff, or what I want, but I can totally get a reaction. I can use wires that are really really tiny too. Doesn't change the fact that I don't actually have anything resembling an 'interface'. Yeah I can make the dude twitch, that's a lot different from implanting memories or some shit like that.

This is basically Mind Machine Interface from Alpha Centauri made real. It isn't that bad. It will probably be fine, tbh.

Besides, chances are this world is an illusion and we've had them in our brains since we were born. Only exception being for NPC's.

Nothing to see here, just be happy and opt for your implant when the time comes. It will probably be required for most upper level jobs and opportunities. This is the future.

I agree with Karl people are just never going to think for themselves, if people get brain chips I'm betting in a few hundred years we'll become a borg hive mind
