One 18-year-old male was killed and eight students were hurt in a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch and police say “two shooters” were caught by officers running into the building. Both suspects are students at the school.

The school is located approximately 8 miles from Columbine High School in neighboring Jefferson County.

Denver7 reported that investigators believe at least one of the suspects stole the guns from the parents of the 18-year-old suspect,

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock confirmed that at least two handguns were used in the shooting.

High-ranking sources told Denver7 Tuesday night that three handguns and a rifle were recovered but said the rifle was not used in the shooting

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – One student is dead and eight others injured after two of their classmates opened fire at a suburban Denver STEM school on Tuesday.

Superintendent Thomas S. Tucker said in a letter to parents that STEM School Highlands Ranch, a public charter school with more than 1,850 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, will be closed for the remainder of the week.

"This is a terrible event," Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. "This is something that nobody wants to happen in their community."

Kendrick Castillo, 18, was identified Wednesday as the lone fatality, the sheriff said.

It's been holding the #1 or #2 spots on CNN's site all day, with at least 8-10 stories lined listed. MSNBC has memory-holed it, which I've noticed is something they tend to do quicker than almost every other outlet. ABC has given it one line, one link. CBS coverage not too bad. Fox News has a cornucopia of Colorado Shooting coverage, of course.

MSNBC though! They are consistently the shittiest news outlet in the US. They regularly make CNN look good. Consider that horrifying fact.

I really wish I hadn't read that. I am ruined.

Have another , on the house. This one even had a really great Peter Jackson movie made about it.

Unless the stats have drastically changed, last time I looked at the the weird thing about mass shootings is that they are almost exactly proportional. i.e. Society is 80% white? So shooters are 80% white. Society 10% black? So are shooters. etc (may not be actual numbers, just using those as hypothetical)

Gee... I wonder what has changed in that time...

What a complete mystery....
I didn’t say that I didn’t understand what’s feuling it. What I said was we need to figure out a solution. I don’t think that’s out of line, nor do I think it’s a stupid question. What are your ideas?

I also don’t understand why you guys are resistant to the fact that young white men are predominantly pulling this shit. Sure, there are less POC in this country, but please name the last school or church shooting done by a black man. The last I can find is 2013. Facts are facts no matter how uncomfortable they are. From what I’ve sourced there have been 62 mass shootings by white folks since 1982 and 18 by black folks. The disparity in race is not big enough to support that. I simply want to find out what’s making these kids freak out.

Do all the gang shootings in schools count? Personally I'm vastly more interested in finding out why is 12% of the population committing 50% of all murders rather than the comparatively rare mass killings.

12% of the population of the US is black. 18 to 62 means 18% black. By your numbers blacks are more likely.

If you’d read my prior posts I’ve covered this. Come the fuck on. I’m just parent who would prefer to have her children come home alive each day. I don’t know if you folks have kids, but every time this stupid shit happens it sends shivers down your spine. You can make fun of me or get as sassy as you want, however, this conversation needs to be had.

Do pools send shivers down your spine? They should, your kids are way more likely to die drowning in one than in a mass shooting. That conversation needs to be had. Dont be afraid of mass shootings. Be afraid of things vastly more likely to kill your kids like obesity, drinking and driving and drugs. Never mind you're ignoring that by your own numbers posted blacks are disproportionately commit shootings too.

Not in my area, friend. Demographically speaking, no it’s not more likely.

Do you have children? If you did you’d understand that, yes, pools do send shivers down your spine which is why we don’t leave children unattended. Guns send shivers down your spine which is why you keep the secured. Fucking counter tops send chills down your spine so you child proof them. Open doors send chills down your spine because kids are curious little devils. I can already tell you aren’t a parent and that’s fine. I think that may be why you have a different reaction to this kind of thing.

ETA: I don’t wrap my kids in bubble wrap. I treat them fairly and make them earn praise and accept punishment, but this shit really scares parents because it can happen anywhere.

Uh... 13% black population, right?
18 divided by 80 is 22.5%

The race disparity is more than enough to cover that. Facts are facts.

Nor does the media like to talk much about it either. They focus almost entirely on white suburban shootings and it skews the perspective. Hence the "memoryhole" that people have been talking about in this thread.

Here's a shooting that happened at a church cookout only a couple weeks ago.
https://kiwifarms.net/threads/7-shot-in-baltimore-maryland.55877/
Ever heard of it? Probably not. No followups. No round the clock reporting with talking head panelists giving hot takes. Just a quick blurb when the story breaks then nothing. Memoryholed.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. You should teach your kids how to shoot and have them carry. If they're still in elementary, a 22 should be fine. Otherwise id recommend a small 9.

hahahah
hahahahahahahahaha
she'll be in a prison with the world's most disgusting and uncivilized men, many of which haven't seen a vagina in years.
If this screeching troon is adamant on being labeled as a male, she better prepare to be the fucking prison sidewalk, because everyone's gonna all over her in more ways than one.

So we are supposed to entertain your bullshit because your maternal instincts are overriding reasoning functions in your brain?

If we want policy that works we need to abandon our feelings and look at the facts and at ways to accomplish reasonable goals. Not useless security theater designed to make mommies and daddies feel better. This is a problem that will never go away no matter what we do. There is no complete solution just things that chip away at it. Your kid is never going to be completely safe. You will never not have to worry about your kids coming home safe. You and all the other concerned parents need to get a grip with reality and realise that participating in an open society entails risks. Crazys shooting up the place is just one of many hazards out there in society. Fucking deal.

That little issue cleared up, let's talk policy. Most all proposed crap is a waste of time and money. The shooters are the students. They know the procedures and the layout and have ample time to plan and prepare. You can't stop it with passive defenses and security people and the more the school presents a difficult target the more it simply pushes their violence elsewhere, like bus stops and athletic fields and field trips that can't be secured.

The best thing to do policy wise (we can't just assign kids daddys to solve the single parent issue) would probably be to increase school resources for counselling and mental health treatment for young people and not being afraid to commit them and get them flagged. This would also have a knock-on effect of saving a shitload of kids who kill themselves annually (which is waaaaaay more likely to happen).

I'm not making fun of you, but it's more than a little melodramatic and unhealthy to believe that your kids are at grave risk of being murdered every day that they go to school.

Also, even liberal mainstays like NPR, WaPo, and NYT frequently publish articles about the myth of a more dangerous world and clear-cut gun violence stats:

Despite Heightened Fear Of School Shootings, It's Not A Growing Epidemic

Most Americans incorrectly think gun-murder rates have gotten worse, not better

Nearly 40,000 People Died From Guns in U.S. Last Year, Highest in 50 Years (NB: Two-thirds of those deaths were and always are suicides, not victims of murder or mass shootings. Many people conveniently omit that fact when citing gun deaths.)

I don’t believe that everyday, only when this shit happens and you have that momentary concern for the kids and their families. Believe me, I’m sure my kids generally think I’m a she-beast most of the time. They are not cut slack, they do chores, they have expectations. However, when this happens even if its not a major disaster you put yourself in the parent’s shoes and you at least momentarily think of your own in that position.

Whoa, friend. I’m just trying to have a fucking conversation. I’m definitely not under the illusion that any of you are or will “entertain” my bullshit.

Sorry for the double post, I’m on my phone and it sucks.

Well yeah, I think about how awful a lot of shit would be when I read about horrific things. Hell, I live in Colorado, so this is local to me. Tbh I'm far more worried about being killed by a runaway truck on I-70 like the incident that happened a few weeks ago than I am about being murdered. Fear, anxiety, and worry aren't facts and can't be conflated with actual risk, though.

I agree with that. It’s just a knee jerk reaction. You see a problem, you want to fix it. That’s all.

Theyre both insanely rare and guns dont send chills down my spine at least. Id also seriously reconsider that. 350 kids under 4 drown a year. Its way more than are shot before they even enter school. Also, Ive taught kids how to shoot. It was no skin off my back, it doesnt scare me a whole lot.
