Twitter has permanently banned the accounts of right-wing conspiracy theorist and radio host Alex Jones and InfoWars, the company said Thursday.

The accounts violated the company's abusive behavior policies, Twitter said in a series of tweets. The ban comes weeks after Jones was banned or suspended by other major tech companies like Apple, Facebook and YouTube. Twitter had initially declined to take disciplinary action against Jones, saying the accounts had not violated community guidelines, but later suspended him for a period of seven days.

"We took this action based on new reports of Tweets and videos posted yesterday that violate our abusive behavior policy, in addition to the accounts' past violations," the company said. "We wanted to be open about this action given the broad interest in this case."

Accounts for Jones and Infowars were also banned from Twitter-owned Periscope. Jones will not be able to recreate his presence on the sites under another account.

Jones appeared at congressional hearings Wednesday where Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey addressed online election meddling, as well as accusations of political bias and conservative censorship on the platform. At the hearings, Jones ranted at a CNN reporter and streamed the exchange on Periscope.

How can you argue it's not a 1st amendment violation while at the same time both Facebook and Twitter appear before the Senate and have to explain why they haven't removed pages and accounts for Wikileaks because it's a "non-state hostile intelligence service"

Morally speaking you can argue as much as you want, but the deplatforming campaign is seemingly working cause Alex's new stuff on his app are getting a tiny fraction of the views he got on Youtube. Does anyone have an idea what avenues he has left to get back on his feet?
 
The 1st amendment was written at a time when the means of communicating ideas were to write them down and scream them at random passerby on the street. At the time, the only force strong enough to prevent the spread of ideas was government. The only entity that owned the means of transmission (the roads and parks) was the government.

Now however, the public square is increasingly digital and owned by private entities who have as much if not even more power then the government to manipulate information. We need to remember the intention behind the 1st amendment protection. It it is to prevent powerful institutions from controlling the free flow of information. Because a society where information is controlled is not free.

I agree with this sentiment. They are pegging themselves as the digital equivalent of the public square. When you do that, then you fall under the public purview.

Oh, they have MUCH more power over the public square than any Govt anywhere in history, as it's pretty much the International public square they control with today's trends and tech. I believe it's inevitable that social media has to be taken out of the hands of these companies as a matter of urgency and treated as utilities under US amendment rule.

Not only are the lefties dead set on making sure Trumpadour gets four more years, they're angling for vice president Jones.
 
Unlike Nike, Twitter's stock actually took a real hit because of this.

If this existed in a bubble, I would actually think it's not a bad decision considering Alex Jones' entire schtick is really just in place in order to sell overpriced quack supplement pills. He's a crazy, screaming scam artist.

In full context though, it's kind of worrying how downhill things can go. It could be only a matter of time before less and less extreme people start getting banned.

Seriously, though I think Jones and his ilk are lunatics, censoring speech is not the answer. Better to let the ideas be expressed so they can be debated and mocked as warranted.
 
Actually, stewing over this some more, I wonder if this is a distraction tactic to take focus off of twitter’s recent controversial change where they now show that you liked the first tweet in a chain of tweets on other people’s TL’s, regardless of whether you liked that tweet or a tweet somewhere within the chain. It’s had the effect of making Donald Trump tweets show up more on people’s timelines. Twitter has also said they wanted to break the ‘echo chamber effect’, though they’ve left it pretty vague to what it is. Not to say that Twitter is alt-right or anything but I’ve definitely seen a lot of people angry about this in the last few days, so maybe they think they can get away with it if they do something to appease that crowd.
