It's debatable how human space marines really are so they really don't have gender in any meaningful way which tumblr would probably misinterpret if they considered it. It does tickle when SJW types latch onto 40k, were humanity has grown cold, desperate and ruthless in a dark and haunted galaxy.

Like why do people think that this is okay? They're are so many gay characters out there that you can use, so why take straight characters and alter them?

I think a lot if it has to with it being a combination of the Guybrush Paradox and (though most SJWs would never admit it) wanting to use their personal favorite characters as a outlet for porn.

For any of number of reasons - from being a side character to being held to a different standard of "acceptable traits" - a lot of canon gay/lesbian/trans/Indonesian/etc. characters and up being kinda, well, bland at best or an obnoxious mouthpiece for whatever issue they represent. But the main characters? Those guys get to have a plethora of personality: they get to have a wide range of goals, interests, and flaws, they get to do stupid shit and make mistakes and get their commupence in ways that make them relatable and/or endearing, they get to be complicated and not always likeable and learn from that.

For all their bleating about "muh representation" they seem to realize that the above traits are what really make a character engaging, and thus are naturally drawn to them. But then the SJWs have to justify to themselves why all their faves are the evil cishets, so instead of putting effort into making pre-existing diversity characters more compelling, it's easier to just slap some rainbows on their fanart and call it a day.

They're like those kids who go into a pet store and tell mommy and daddy that they want THIS SPECIFIC DOG but with the fur patterns they saw on the cat a few cages down, not understanding that they're two different animals.
