Seriously has anyone managed to nigger out the source of the obsession with vitiligo tumblr has? Like is it all because of that cowskinned model bint from a few years ago who was making rounds on social media? Or have i missed some mass autism eruption on the subject?

It's the easiest thing to slap onto a character for diversity points right next to pride flag shirts and binders. Simple as that.

Yeesh, I didn't even recognize the characters until the last panel it occurred to me who they were supposed to be.
Seriously, Nanami's as white as an egg in the actual game. Why is she black? Oh right, it's Tumblr.
I'm fairly certain it's due to a bunch of positivity posts going around talking about how gorgeous and beautiful vitiligo is around 2012-2014. Some artists started drawing people with vitiligo as a result, and others latched onto it and tumblr never let it go.

If only they showed this much attention to characters with canonically dark skin, rather than take ones with canonically light skin and paint them dark.

my theory is that -its because tumblr really likes giving its characters features that are considered unattractive so that they can subtly [or not so subtly] imply "look, society doesnt deem these totally conventionally unattractive features pretty, but I DO, therefor im holier"
of course no one NOWADAYS finds vitiligo unattractive but at some point it was beginning to be more well known and portrayed as something SHOCKINGLY UGLY AND UNUSUAL [even tho its totally not, and usually it was only portrayed as unusual for a model to have anyway, who obviously have unrealistically high standards], and every model's w vitiligo EMPOWERING story is abt how she was bullied for it as a kid, several decades ago, and everyone latched on to it assuming it was somehow an oppression point
so now its the only skin condition they both can claim is not considered conventionally attractive, while actually being the most popular and conventionally attractive one.

It's because there was a popular Suicide Girls model with vitiligo, as well as a contestant on America's Next Top Model with the same condition in a short period of time. Both models are black women with the condition, though the Suicide Girls model is probably the inspiration given how people love the spotty markings.
Both of these blew up on Tumblr. I saw the Suicide Girls model in particular all over Tumblr around four or five years ago.
