🐱 ABC drops Roseanne show after racist tweet

ABC has pulled the plug on the revival “Roseanne.”

The move comes after series star Roseanne Barr made a comment on Twitter Tuesday morning referring to former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Barr deleted her tweet about Jarrett not long after posting it. She followed it up with an apology which read, “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste. I am now leaving Twitter.”

The revival of the classic sitcom was set to air a 13-episode eleventh season this fall. The move represents a remarkable turn of events for the network, Barr, and a show that finished the season as the No. 1 scripted primetime television series in the 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen live-plus-same say numbers.





Just two weeks ago at ABC’s upfront presentation, Barr introduced Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood, joking that he was “the guy responsible for most of my tweets.” Sherwood and Barr hugged onstage, and the the exec noted that ABC had not had television’s No. 1 show in 24 years. Dungey, during her portion of the presentation, bragged that “The premiere ratings even took us by surprise,” claiming that 1 in 10 Americans has seen the “Roseanne” revival premiere.

Valerie Jarrett reminds us why people hate her to begin with by saying the situation should be a "teaching moment" by, in kind and diplomatic terms, implying racists are running rampant in the streets, putting blame on Trump, saying ABC made the right choice to shut down Rosanne's show, and there should be more of this to set an example.

It won't work. John Goodman, Sara Gilbert and Emma Kenney are pissed. You can't do Roseanne without two of them.

I still think my idea of Roseanne dying during surgery and seeing the family dealing with that could be interesting. Darlene having to really look after Dan, Jackie being unsure how to feel, stuff like that could be good. Then just continue by going down the route they were essentially travelling anyway, push it down a generation and have Darlene and Becky as the new Roseanne and Jackie,

If it worked the best part would be that they managed to pull of Roseanne sans Roseanne.

Valerie's Family did it by hiring Sandy Duncan and retitling the show The Hogan Family. That's what happens when you're greedy. That was the first instance of a television show named after the lead character having it's lead killed off and replaced by someone else.

The faces of Goodman and Gilbert say it all. That's really bad for them. Overnight you lose your job because Roseanne can't keep her mouth shut on social media in the current year.

This reminds me of how I read that Sam and Cat, a highly-rated Nick show, was cancelled after Ariana Grande had a fight with her co-star (I think it was at the KCAs from what I recall reading). It's pretty sad that this happened, though, because it did pretty well. Looks like the fans of the reboot will have to watch something else now. Let's hope something like this doesn't happen to the other popular reboot on TV, Will and Grace.
