I've been thinking about the phrase "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". I know it's such an old cliche - but I'm going to use it straight. No Portal 2 references.
Phil can't make lemonade. Or in real terms: he has no imagination or ability to adapt. He simply will not consider any other lifestyle choice. He can only live in that house; he can only sit in that corner of that room and grind out 6 hours of shtreaming khantent per day. If he sells the house, he "loses" at life. The end. No Plan B.
It's so frustrating -- losing that house is not the end! It's not failure! (Well it is... he's a total financial fuck-up... but that's not my point...) Phil has a job that he could literally perform from almost any small room in America. Plenty of successful kids on Twitch do the same job from bedrooms and small apartments. It's not like Phil ever made the most of his "office" space -- he's pointed the camera at the same corner of the room since 2014. Moving to a smaller property should be an adventure... an opportunity to relaunch and reinvent his content. At the very least it would be a long-overdue change of scenery. He and Kat could vlog about the move to a smaller house. He could turn it into a redemption story about good ol' humble Phil going back to his roots.
Make lemonade!!
I know his excuses:
"Another location won't have business-class internet" (Look into it, millions of homes can!)
"Another property won't have sound insulation so I can't make noise and do my job" (So take your current insulation and buy some more)
"Another property won't have a dedicated office room" (Too bad, use your bedroom while Kat uses the living room)
"Another location will have more taxes" (Because that worked out so well in Washington)
"If it snows I can't shovel it because of my back..." (You never leave the house anyway)
All of these excuses are just Phil not knowing how to make lemonade. The only serious reason I can think for Phil to need to stay in that big house: His long-term debt strategy absolutely hinges on remortaging the house. He is staring into the terrifying vortex of life-long debt, and he's gambled everything on the Gout Mansion, in which case he's even more screwed than we think.
