I really, really hate fan fiction.

Finding good fanfiction is like trying to pan for gold in a sea of crap.

It exists, you just have to go through all the crap to find it.

I've been writing fanfic for about thirteen years now and, yes, my early stuff was terrible. I know that now. But it gave me practice at a time when I had no idea of how to go about constructing my own original stories and led me to my first writing group, which helped me realize just how much I wanted to write professionally. These days I have a day job, work on my original manuscripts after work, and occasionally do short humor fics or character study pieces for fun.

I believe that what a lot of people are reacting to isn't so much the fanfic itself as the author culture that surrounds it. Mary-Sueism, review circlejerking, juvenile behavior, inability to accept criticism, plagiarism--none of those exactly make you want to spend more time browsing fanfiction.net. As with anything, Sturgeon's Law is in effect.

I love fanfiction. I've read some really amazing, novel-length works and a lot more shitfic, but I love it for the concept of the "transformative work," the idea of taking a pre-established story or character and building something new and unexpected off of that, which develops new ideas and scenarios accordingly. It's the 21st century's version of mythic oral tradition, and I find it fascinating.

That, and I met my partner of nearly six years and now-fiance on a fanfiction kink meme for Watchmen. No shame, no regrets, YOLOOOOO!

Última edición:
I enjoy it from an ironic note cause all the fanfics I have read were really fuckin shitty (in all honesty that's what I look for).

The reviews for a shitty fanfic can also determine the general intelligence of the general fanbase of a particular Fandom as well (at least that's how I determine it).

I won't argue that there are will written fanfics out there, I'm sure there is a bunch, it's just the ones I have come across ate shit (because again, that's what I look for when I want a good laugh).

If you really love and study the source material, make sure your content believably fits within that universe, and are a talented writer... fanfiction can be really good. I once wrote a BioShock fanfiction depicting the life of a citizen of Rapture, dealing with the work force, how people they knew became splicers, and what led up to their death. I'd say it was at least decent and not too Sue-ish.

Not reading. Give me the cliffnotes.
The Jedi sell disobedient Padawans into sex slavery as a form of punishment. The Mandalorians are of course, the moral fucking compass of the galaxy. Amazingly, the author manages to come of as less subtle than Karen Traviss.

Sexual slavery is really common within the Star Wars universe and they couldn't even manage that correctly. :story:

As somebody who first started making stuff up by cooking up fanfiction, I do think that if you approach it with a critical eye you'll teach yourself how to make your own characters and worlds and advance your craft.

After a while when I got the hang of making versions of worlds I really liked, I realized that a lot of my ideas were going further and further from the canons they were meant for to tell the stories I wanted to, so I thought to myself "Why don't I just make something with these things I like?" and made a universe that could give me what I wanted.

My Star Wars is really rusty, but aren't the Mandalorians supposed to be like SW-verse Klingons? Unless it has to do with the customs of making war I'm not sure I want to follow the Mandalorian way anywhere.

I think, I don't really follow Star Trek so I'm not sure how accurate that is. Basically, in their glory days, they went around committing genocide and nuking planet for glory, until the Jedi floored them so utterly that they broke. After spending literally hundreds of years regrouping, they split into a bunch of factions, with the dominant one wanting go into the mercenary business. They were promptly wiped out by the faction that wanted to go back to warmongering and the remaining warriors pretty much killed each other off.
...
Until that bitch Traviss came along anyway, then you've got five million of the psychotic fuckers running around. I'd like to point out that according to her, Mandos don't have preschools, they have boot camps. And this is portrayed as a good thing.

I think there are actually good fanfics, but there's a lot more of really questionable fanfics in the mix to go through. On the bright side, reading bad fanfics is fun for a good laugh so there something to take from it.

The only fanfic I got really into was "I Am Lucario"
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5063444/1/I-Am-Lucario

That fanfic is the only one that doesn't become grimdark for the sake of it like other Pokemon fanfics. (coughLatias' Journeycough) When stuff happens, it's not in your face about it and it is handled naturally.

I used to write fan fiction for Valkyria Chronicles for a while.

One was a short story and the other went on for around 15. chapters I think.

Looking back, they aren't very good. My writing was stilted and lacked detail in most areas. Still, I had fun while it lasted.

But yeah, lots of bad fanfics out there. A lot of decent ones too though.

Misty's last name is Waterflowers?

Misty had a last name??

:O

So not only does Paul Blart fanfiction exist, but most of it seems to be about shipping self-inserts with Veck, the main antagonist.
