I'm surprised he lost anything. I really expected him to lose little to no weight before quiting because his attitude seemed to be that this was some magic cure-all.

Pretty sure he's just lying to his doctors about his eating habits and acting confused as to why its not working, so they're just throwing their hands up and saying "Well if you're eating properly then you must have a brain tumour". But, when he's proved wrong about this as well it's just all going to point back to square one - he's fat because he fucking eats too much. Granted, he's still going to try to deny it despite the evidence.

I doubt a doctor even told him that. He's probably just been searching the internet for medical conditions that can cause weight gain and is using it as an excuse, hoping there's another quick fix out there now that he's failed to be compliant with the bypass surgery.
