Meet the woman who proposed the new breastfeeding emoji to tackle stigmas around feeding babies in public


A London-based nurse called Rachel Lee came up with the idea for a new icon showing a mum feeding a bambino. Will it help society to become more accepting of breastfeeding?

THE woman who first proposed the introduction of a breastfeeding emoji has called for an end to stigma surrounding mums feeding their babies in public.

Rachel Lee, a neonatal nurse at University College London Hospital, spoke to the BBC to reveal why she decided to call for a breastfeeding emoji.

All emojis are regulated by an organisation called the Unicode Consortium.

Rachel wrote to this body and called for a breastfeeding emoji - and now her idea is about to come to life and be rolled out to the iPhone and devices from other manufacturers.

She said: "I know that mums are really busy just looking after their little ones.

"I don't think they have got time to go through the process of writing a proposal to the Unicode Consortium to see if they can introduce a breastfeeding emoji.

"Breastfeeding in public is not really a thing.

"There are a lot of people who still have very negative things to say about that and think that women should be doing that behind closed doors, that it's meant to be a private thing.

"By putting it out there in society, more people will talk about it."

Rachel said she hopes the icon "normalises it a little bit and hopefully allow society to see it in a different light" and redefines breastfeeding so it's "not something which should be hidden".

Apple will roll out a brand new selection of emojis including the breastfeeding icon as part of iOS 11.1, an upcoming version of the operating system for iPhone and iPad which will be released later this year.

I know it's the Sun, but it's still disheartening to see an entire portion of a news website dedicated to "emoji stories".

I guess this is the site to be safe and just say it, because many of us think it.

Public breast feeders are attention whoring cunts. Oh it's natural? So is a nice big shit, and jacking off. We know babies need to eat, and there's ways around this tons of them in fact an entire industry is set up for this, be it formula , pumps etc.

There's also something called don't take a fucking 5 week old out to god damn 6 flags. You have created a human life, and you have to flop your tits out and then act all high and mighty when people stare when you deal with bodily functions in public?

People don't even change babies in public, why can't they just go to the bathroom and close the stall door? Because, then it's not about them. It's about that kid.... and we can't let a new born have the spot light. Vapid fucking cunts, I swear all the kids with moms like this are doomed.

Edit: I don't use the C bomb lightly, but I honestly list this like as emotional abuse of a new born. Babies should be loved and oooh'd and ahhh'd but the moms here are too damned selfish to let the baby have the spot light, and that's so so gross to me.
 
Strange choice for a new emoji.
Off topic, but in my opinion, breastfeeding in a bathroom is unsanitary, considering how nasty public restrooms are.
Most public places have quiet back rooms or break rooms you can go into to breastfeed, its quite awkward to just do it out in the open without a cover.
 
I don't mind women breastfeeding in public, provided they're discreet. And most are. There are tops made for breast feeding, which have hidden flaps so really all you can really see is the baby's head, and maybe a small patch of skin, if you look hard. Pumping isn't as easy as it sounds, and feeding a kid in the bathroom is unsanitary, plus would YOU want to eat in the restroom? No.
So the vast majority of the time, people make a big fuss over nothing. It's better than having a screaming kid annoying everyone, isn't it?

HOWEVER, there's also a small, but very vocal group who basically believe a woman should just plop her tits out and start screeching "IT'S NATURAL!!!!" at anyone who happens to pass by. They usually tend to continue feeding their kids past their 2nd birthday (we're talking like, five-year-olds and sometimes even older!), and some of the more militant lecture women who bottle feed, and tell them that formula is poison. THOSE women are a pain in the ass.

(And don't even get me started on the whole breast-feeding men.)

Isn't breastfeeding a burden in the modern age? Unless you don't have a job it's going to be a major burden on you. I don't really get why it's so important. I imagine formula is just fine and much easier to deal with. However I grew up hearing nothing but criticism about it. So maybe I am a bit biased although I used to be more pro than I am now. But do what you want. I actually don't care if you do it in public. I don't even care if your tits are out. If anything I'd like breasts to stop being taboo because I think it's stupid that they are. But I don't see that changing.

But the women who are absolutely insane and are still breastfeeding five year olds in the first world tend to be so obnoxiously vocal that you want to smack them. I've seen stuff about breastfeeding men. Really weird. I don't think they can produce much milk though.
