FEELING EMOJINAL
Meet the woman who proposed the new breastfeeding emoji to tackle stigmas around feeding babies in public

A London-based nurse called Rachel Lee came up with the idea for a new icon showing a mum feeding a bambino. Will it help society to become more accepting of breastfeeding?

THE woman who first proposed the introduction of a breastfeeding emoji has called for an end to stigma surrounding mums feeding their babies in public.

Rachel Lee, a neonatal nurse at University College London Hospital, spoke to the BBC to reveal why she decided to call for a breastfeeding emoji.

The breastfeeding emoji, which will soon be available on Apple iPhones
All emojis are regulated by an organisation called the Unicode Consortium.

Rachel wrote to this body and called for a breastfeeding emoji - and now her idea is about to come to life and be rolled out to the iPhone and devices from other manufacturers.

She said: "I know that mums are really busy just looking after their little ones.

"I don't think they have got time to go through the process of writing a proposal to the Unicode Consortium to see if they can introduce a breastfeeding emoji.

"Breastfeeding in public is not really a thing.

"There are a lot of people who still have very negative things to say about that and think that women should be doing that behind closed doors, that it's meant to be a private thing.

"By putting it out there in society, more people will talk about it."

Rachel said she hopes the icon "normalises it a little bit and hopefully allow society to see it in a different light" and redefines breastfeeding so it's "not something which should be hidden".

Apple will roll out a brand new selection of emojis including the breastfeeding icon as part of iOS 11.1, an upcoming version of the operating system for iPhone and iPad which will be released later this year.

I'm going to adopt a pretty unpopular opinion (apparently), but newborns have to eat almost constantly. The hardiest ones can go around three hours between meals and/or passing the fuck out because they didn't get enough energy to keep them awake until their adrenaline kicks back in and makes them start screaming for food again. Babies aren't monsters out to ruin your dinner, they're brainless milk leeches who are literally not sure if they're going to live or die when they get hungry, and they're going to scream until not dying becomes a realistic possibility because screaming is the only thing they can do. Personally all of my babies have made it around ninteyish minutes between feedings before flipping the fuck out until they were fed.

Breast milk is probably better than formula. Just realistically. It's something a mother made specifically for the baby that's screaming it's head off for it. Formula does the trick if it has to, and no mother should be ashamed of relying on it, but denying that your body made a food specifically for a confused screaming helpless infant hungry for what's probably that very specific food is weird.
You can use formula probably. Every kid is different and reacts differntly to different formulas. Some mothers don't make enough milk for their kids no matter how much they wish they could, and have to use formula, which means they have to find the right formula. Cause it's not like corn flakes. You can't always just use store brand. They're babies, they're barely hanging on to growth. Some of them need specific formulas. Sometimes it's ridiuclously expensive. Sometimes it doesn't matter how expensive their formula is because you just don't make enough milk to help them thrive.

Babies need to eat that way for about 4 months on average. Four months not might sound long to a video game addicted NEET, but it's a long time for someone used to going outside every day. It's a hell of a long time for someone separated from their baby because they live in a country with a woefully inadequate parental leave that sends them back to work during the phase where their baby still literally experiences hourly cravings for their milk, but gives an exception do you can go pump your tits in a public bathroom and put the milk in an ice bag and give it to the kid when you all get home.

Every single person here was a baby once. You needed to be fed. It wasn't easy. You can get mad at girls who whip out their tits and spin around in circles and start screaming "It's natural" before breastfeeding (I've literally never seen that happen) but keeping a baby healthy is a question mark and they can absolutely die from not eating enough. So you're telling mothers they have to keep their shit inside for four months so you don't have to momentarily notice they started feeding a baby. Get the fuck over it.

People shouldn't have babies and if they do they should be kept inside until they are like ten or so.
I don't care about public breastfeeding. If anything it should be accepted everywhere without question just so that the people doing it to attention whore have to find something else to do.

I don't get it. So do they think people are gonna use this emoji around people that hate public breastfeeding to... make them approve of public breast feeding? Don't they think that it might just make them hate it even more?

Do we really need an emoji for fucking everything nowadays?
Isn't breastfeeding a burden in the modern age? Unless you don't have a job it's going to be a major burden on you. I don't really get why it's so important. I imagine formula is just fine and much easier to deal with. However I grew up hearing nothing but criticism about it. So maybe I am a bit biased although I used to be more pro than I am now. But do what you want. I actually don't care if you do it in public. I don't even care if your tits are out. If anything I'd like breasts to stop being taboo because I think it's stupid that they are. But I don't see that changing.

But the women who are absolutely insane and are still breastfeeding five year olds in the first world tend to be so obnoxiously vocal that you want to smack them. I've seen stuff about breastfeeding men. Really weird. I don't think they can produce much tard cum though.
Since I was studying for an exam over this anyways, here:

Breast is best, but because I'm a cynical bitch I feel it is strongly indecent to pull out my tit in a public space unless I'm out of view and covered. I mean if any mother wants to do that, they are free to do so, but they should be mindful of reactions if they choose to do it. When women who post videos of them breastfeeding their kids or pumping milk/hand expressions complain about the amount of perverse comments they recieve, well no shit, that's expected. Society is full of weird fucks and it isn't a safe space.

Breast is best

I've considered making a community watch thread for Breast is Best groups, because those women are fucking whackadoodle at their best, and pure evil at worst. Formula probably shouldn't be your first go to choice if you can give your baby something natural and basically custom brewed just for them (not to mention essentially free, if you don't count the caloric increase needed in your own diet to produce it). But there's nothing immoral about needing it or augmenting with it or deciding you prefer it.
But the Breast is Best groups act like giving formula to a baby is worse than just letting it starve to death, so much so that that's actually happened a few times. If you take a new inexperienced mother who's already a nervous wreck about being a parent, and start pounding it in her head that she's a worthless garbage human if she's not producing enough to sustain her infant, and that if she uses formula then she's failing her child and swear up and down that everything will be okay if she just keeps constantly nursing, you're basically satan.

Pretty much this. You shouldn't wind up in positions where you have to breastfeed or pump in public very often, like it shouldn't be something you consider a major obstacle, and if it is it's because you're making stuff hard on yourself for the attention it brings. But you're also not a horrible person if you had to get out of the house with your kid and and realized you're too far out for privacy and need to give it a snack. And as for doing it in a bathroom stall... that's just gross. I don't want to eat on the toilet. Babies shouldn't have to eat in a cloud of poop and piss just because some incel will flip out if he notices someone in the room has boobs.

You can't really act indignant if someone stares or notices that you're feeding. People are going to react to anything you do, it's no exception, and if you pretend to be surprised or mortified instead of just awkwardly keeping on, then you're probably being an obnoxious attention whore. But if you fly into a frothing rage because someone had the audacity to feed a hungry child near you, you're being a massive wuss.

Please do make that thread. I was considering it too, but it was more of an afterthought than a serious idea. There are massive amounts of salt in that community, and there are tons of content on youtube.

Strange choice for a new emoji.
Off topic, but in my opinion, breastfeeding in a bathroom is unsanitary, considering how nasty public restrooms are.
Most public places have quiet back rooms or break rooms you can go into to breastfeed, its quite awkward to just do it out in the open without a cover.
I don't mind women breastfeeding in public, provided they're discreet. And most are. There are tops made for breast feeding, which have hidden flaps so really all you can really see is the baby's head, and maybe a small patch of skin, if you look hard. Pumping isn't as easy as it sounds, and feeding a kid in the bathroom is unsanitary, plus would YOU want to eat in the restroom? No.
Well in that case, the argument is bathrooms should be kept clean. After all, a dirty bathroom causing women to resort to breastfeeding in public not only reflects poorly on an establishment to nursing mothers, but everybody else who sees it and/or needs to use the bathroom.

I like scratching my ass but I don't do it in public either. It is healthy and natural but it is private.

It really should not be allowed in public. There are no-window breastfeeding and baby-cleaning rooms located next to women's bathrooms exactly for that purpose.

-Clean place to clean your baby of poo-poo.
-The 80 year old pervy gramps won't be staring at your tits.
-Young boys will not be disgusted and young girls will not be freaked out.
-Everybody's dignity is preserved.
-You got your own chair to sit down in.
