Honest question: Was the A-10, in its close air support mission ever supposed to survive hostile airspace contested by a peer nation? Or was it intended to grant our enemies' ground troops the mercy of a swift death once air superiority had been established?
Nobody thinks they’re omnipotent gods. They think they are petty opportunists. If they were omnipotent gods then they would be able to weigh the pros and cons of stealing everyone’s stuff vs not getting kicked out of yet another country because they burned it to the ground.
The bigger issue is that AA has evolved a lot since the A-10 was developed. It was built to tank enemy ballistic fire while moving in close to attack. If the enemy uses a lot of modern SAMs then the A10 is useless. I would be suprised of they get used at all against China or Russia.

No, in terms of the role it serves it's basically a mix between a plane and a helicopter with some of the pros and cons of each.

It was meant to be one more weapon to try to hold the line for a few hours against the gazillion tanks the Soviets were going to throw into the Fulda Gap before nukes inevitably started flying. It acquitted itself well enough in Gulf War '91 which was the closest we ever got to seeing what a war with the Warsaw Pact would've looked like, with only five being lost to enemy ground fire.
