Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

Also how is Land of the Lustrous? I don't remember if it's good or tranny bait
Mostly neither. The gem people are genderless and it doesn’t come up much because they don’t reproduce like organic people. The anime ends on an unsastisfying point in the story, and there’s a general air of despair to the main story, which basically ends with oblivion.

Land of the Lustrous
I've read the manga a while ago so I would say it has a unique art style and word building but is mired by a convoluted storyline with bad characterization. Might get more out of it if you are quite familiar with Buddhism.

I really liked it. The anime is an alright place to start but it's a fraction of how nuts the manga gets. Reading weekly was a real experience.

Might get more out of it if you are quite familiar with Buddhism.
Yeah that's mandatory, at least the neo zen type shit that shows up in anime (which you can accomplish by having seen enough anime).

buddhism is a defeatist bugman religion
although it's probably used for its aesthetics as much as christianity is in anime

the funny thing being the average jap can tell with buddhism but likely has to wonder ocassionally with christianity when really thinking

I only have a surface level understand of Buddhism if at all but with Land of the Lustrous I think you need to have a bit more knowledgeable to appreciate/understand the material. Which doesn't really change some other criticism I have.

Also, I am sure that I talked about this with some else here when I finished reading through it. Don't remember which user it was though.

It definitely is used everywhere, but I think this is due to the fact that it is ingrained into Japanese society much like Shinto.
Christianity is probably the one where the Japs just pick stuff because they think its cool or interesting.

Buddhism is how life is a gacha and if you didn't get to be SSR chad prince/sect leader then you should try to obey your betters as much as possible so you get a better reroll chance next time.

Or throw yourself under a giant moving religious statue because you heard online that it doubles the SSR chances.

There's a reason why virtually all developed eastern countries are more inline with judeo Christian values than their original Buddhist ones.

I feel like you’re missing the end of the sentence or there’s a word or two missing somewhere
lazy phoneposting
jap understanding of christianity is based on fiction they've read by authors who themselves based it on shit they may have heard/read about but not understood

it is funny to see the church with the spanish inquisition as its military force up to modern times
they'll say some wacky shit about the father, the son, god, and justice that will sound vaguely religious but is that flowery jap monologue shit masquerading as such because they cannot write something they fundamentally do not understand

Shinto in of itself is less a religion and more folklore. Even then, I'm not sure that's the proper way to describe it. Would be like if the western world kept belief in the old pantheons to the modern day. But even that's not accurate because even back then there were specialized cults in Europe. I'd maybe even say it's superstition, but that's not it either. Spirituality as closest as it could be mixed with local culture is probably best.
Christianity is probably the one where the Japs just pick stuff because they think its cool or interesting.
It's like the complete antithesis to their free-form religious thinking, if you can even call it that. There aren't many gods, a cycle of reincarnation, nature spirits, or any other celestial beings besides the one in Heaven with God reigning over everything.

If we are strictly speaking of only Shirow's GitS work then you can pick either one of these:

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Ghost-Shell-Legacy-Manga-Box/dp/B0FCGDT59S

Full Compiled is based on the previous Kodansha single volumes which means that Vol 1 is censored. The box set has lots of extra stuff and is uncensored, I uploaded a bunch of pictures in this thread if you are interested.

That certainly was the case in a lot of his earlier videos and compared to the other idiots from Trash Taste he is the least annoying one. But he turned quite bitter over the years in Japan which affected his videos among other things.

Don't know if people were aware, but this is coming out soon:

The Dark Horse volume one is also uncensored.

You're talking about Hinduism. Buddha thought that the Indian caste system was bullshit and that Brahmins were full of shit for claiming they were inherently superior to everyone. He also would have been against things like crushing yourself under a statue as delusional and a source of negative karma for both harming yourself and for the terrible state of mind you'd be in at death, which is a major factor in what you reincarnate as next.

Buddhism is generally lot more sensible than Hinduism and was even directly opposed to it. Buddhism's main issue is just that is easily comes across as overly nihilistic since the main conceit of why you would want to achieve Nirvana is basically that all the suffering in life outweighs the pleasure so you should extinguish your ego and subsume your sense of self to the cosmos to be forever free of suffering.

Notably, the mainstream school of Buddhism in Japan feels kind of diet Buddhism and it's basically all about how enlightenment is impossible on your own and you shouldn't try, and instead you should just trust Amida Buddha's (Amitabha's) vow to save everyone and if you do you'll automatically reincarnate into a state of Nirvana in Buddhist heaven and then eternally reincarnate as Buddha spirits to help those on Earth. The second most popular strain in Japanese, Zen Buddhism, doesn't even believe in escaping reincarnation at all, and instead thinks Nirvana is just reality itself viewed through enlightenment from a lack of ego and attachment.

Mechas with capes are cool as fuck. Also, shoutout to Megatron from Dark of the Moon for proving this point further.

understandable when buddha is the only one who achieved enlightenment, thus raising the question as to how anyone else can after untold millennia

That's not getting into every branch of Buddhism having its own spin on things and some just outright being batshit crazy. If Buddhism were ever a coherent faith, it wouldn't have splintered as much. Even if you look at the sects of Christianity, you can see the main difference being the structure of the church and debate about the nature of Christ. You have the oldest branch of Buddhism not acknowledging any other Buddha, Vajrayana's crazy sex shit, Korean Buddhism itself stemming from the Koreans buying into it but acknowledging how fucking messy and in need of correction so much of it was, and the Jap's sidelining all the suffering bits or viewing it from another perspective entirely.
