The Tates, I would imagine, are a flight risk. You don't want to tip them off that they are likely to be arrested and extradited.
I also would question whether they had actual friends there. Many of the right-wing personalities and politicians seemed to be part of what I would call a "grift cabal". Many of the people connected to this had defended Tate in the past, as they have to take the anti-establishment position, even though Tate used to brag about half of his crimes on camera. Trump and many of his political allies are obviously connected to the grift cabal.
I suspect almost everyone understood they were guilty but couldn't see a way to pivot their position. So none of them can openly state the truth about Tate or their distaste for him. So everything has to be said behind closed doors.
